The three attached townhomes at the eastern terminus of Communipaw Avenue that were boarding houses for the black Pullman porters on overnights from the nearby CNJRR terminal, as they couldn't stay in segregated hotels.

actually, it has now closed (well, moved, to Newark Street in Hoboken). I'm bummed. I really liked the character of that place. plus, I've used them a couple of times, and they are awesome.

Also, I'm pretty sure the scene featuring Clemenza's famous line from the Godfather "Leave the gun, take the cannoli's" was shot in the "weeds" of JC.
Some of the stories I head about the Grateful Dead shows at the Stanley Theater and Roosevelt stadium are crazy.

Thanks, Mado. Yes, I\'ve been up there many times but my intention is to get a more local perspective by neighborhood from residents.

Great idea; love - Vanishing New York.
The White Eagle on Newark is incredibly legendary in Basketball. The Second Street Bakery is/should be/will be legendary. Just a couple... There's still plenty of history/charachter/flavor that should be documented.

I don't think so. I've seen the garage door open a few times in the last couple of weeks and it still looks like a shop that's being utilized for its intended purpose. Also, the tin man just received a fresh coat of paint within the last week.

I think that Ironworks place has closed down, it looked like it had been turned into a general construction company when I went past a couple of weeks ago.

Paulushooker, You might get a lot of help compiling your list from the library staff in the New Jersey Room of the Jersey City Library Main branch on Jersey Ave.
They have access to a ton of information (maps, photos, etc).

correct. The huge statues (bison? bears?) in the park are pretty iconic, at least in an unofficial way.

On Central, between St. paul's and Hopkins there is a house with awesome wood carvings of a bear, fish and one other thing which I don't remember. Very cool, and the resident does them, I assume from the uncarved tree trunks on the porch.

On Wayne St between Grove and Barrow there's a pretty cool statue of Buddha. I guess stuff like the Colgate Clock is pretty obvious, and also official? How about the weird elliptical clock/calendar at the end of the pier of the Hyatt at Exchange Place?

There is a miniature castle, built by Charles Simmonds, at Liberty State Park.
I'm not sure if this qualifys as an unofficial landmark, but hardly anyone knows about it.

I'm in the process of setting one up. By the end of the week, I'll post these on the new site so that it'll be possible to comment and upload photos.

Will there eventually be a website, blog or Facebook page to view the "unofficial landmarks" being compiled in this post?

The Newport "Wall of Fame," between Jersey & Erie at 10th. The wall's still there, but the source of the fame (1st class graffiti) is much degraded.

- The now flattened Mount Pleasant, former home of the Lava Bed Gang, west of the Harsimus Cemetery.
- Current and former ventilation shafts structures for the DL&W (now NJ Transit) tunnels in the Heights. - Aqueduct tunnels in the Tonnelle Circle vicinity.

Not sure if anyone reads Vanishing New York but it's a blog of the gentrification of Manhattan's neighborhoods:
http://vanishingnewyork.blogspot.com/ I lived in the 70s in the East Village and many of the type of places you mention in this post meant also meant so much to people that lived there. Now, they're just a memory. I've been in JC for 21 years and have also seen so much change that I'd like to create a similar, non-commercial blog for Jersey City to help preserve some of those memories in dynamic way with pictures and commentary from people that live here. And also give people that are new to JC some historical perspective of where they live. Most people have no idea.

Grand and Communipaw where the old Brummer's Ice Cream shop was located.

The neon Trust Co. sign on top of the building in J Sq. was visible from a far distance from the west. The Stanley and Loews, of course. Tippy's is unfortunately gone. Pizza Masters and Blimpie on Central, though not much to look at, have both been around for over 50 years. The bank building at Central and Bowers, formerly Trust Co., is a very visible landmark. It hasn't changed much inside or out since it was built. Podewitz deli on Central has been there forever. Oh, and Boulevard Drinks, but they stupidly changed their sign recently.
