Hudson Valley Harvest Raw and Local Honey - produced by Highland Valley Apiaries - is sold in two sizes (8oz and 16oz) at Whole Foods Market in Edgewater. It tastes great and is has done a fine job of alleviating my seasonal allergies thus far!

The hives where the honey for HVH comes from are in Ulster County, NY, although the Highland Valley Apiaries is based out of Milford, PA.

Bingo. I transferred from catholic K-8 to a well-regarded public school after my 7th grade year; I was so behind in math and sciences that I needed to take summer school. First and only time I took summer school. I was in no way a top-tier student in those days, but I was earning decent grades in those subjects in parochial school before switching schools. I went from 4x=12 in 7th grade to x^2+3y=3x on my first day on 8th grade. I had never seen another letter used in algebra beside x at that point of my life. Definitely academic shock, to say the least.

Never dealt with them as landlords, but they brokered the apartment we currently live in. I was able to negotiate with them on the broker fee and Dante was pretty helpful and always responsive when it came to showing us apartments and signing the lease. He worked around my always changing schedule also, which was a giant plus when apartment hunting the limited rental listings in JC during the dead of winter.

$426!? Their whole shpeel was if you paid a year up front, it was around $299 ($25/mo). Is that amount for both you and your husband?
I haven't tried getting my money back because so far the remainder of my contract has been honored by Club Metro. Club Metro def has everything and then some that Synergy offered, but is inconvenient for people who don't live around the corner from it. My suggestion would be to file a charge-back with the credit card used to pay for the membership if you're not able to secure a refund from the owner. I've heard from two former members that if you pass by Synergy during banker's hours, he can be found inside, so I'd speak to him first before contacting your CC company.

The gym was a product of extremely poor management and that's what led to its demise. One of the owners was too busy trying to land bit parts in tv shows and movies and the other owner was absentee until the very end. The excuse of Sandy's devastation doesn't apply here because the gym was fully operational for weeks after the storm. The basement took on flooding and needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Machines and equipment that were broken last year were still broken as of last week.

Of all the full-time employees there, only one (Sonny) really took care of the place and made sure it was clean. There was a homeless person that recently oversaw the establishment late in the evening that would sleep there and use the shower during business hours. The guy who made the chalkboards hasn't been paid for his services. The only service that the gym provided - towels - were empty half the time I went there. The gym basically was a lesson in everything to do if you want your business to fail. It's unfortunate because it was everything I needed within walking distance to my place and cheap as sh-t, with no pressure to renew/sign long-term contract from the guys who worked there. So long, handful of guys that didn't wear deodorant that stunk the place up to high hell.

Exclusive: New Jersey railway put trains in Sandy flood zone despite warnings

From Reuters.com article:

New Jersey Transit's struggle to recover from Superstorm Sandy is being compounded by a pre-storm decision to park much of its equipment in two rail yards that forecasters predicted would flood, a move that resulted in damage to one-third of its locomotives and a quarter of its passenger cars...

Re: Parking Ticket Issue

rosember: I found out about the second ticket when I went online to pay off the only ticket that was on my windshield. The site showed two unpaid tickets when I entered my plate info: the one I had in my possession and the one that was issued two minutes later. Both tickets are for the same exact violation against code 332-23 for No stopping or standing.

I would completely understand if I were issued tickets for two different parking violations, but it's for the same violation. I was in a spot that doesn't have red curb paint, wasn't blocking off a driveway, and definitely was at least a full car length from the cross walk. I was on the SE corner of 1st, right past Manila next to the lumber yard, so no traffic had to pull out into Manila to see past my vehicle.

The worst part is that I've parked in this spot regularly without being issued a ticket. I even asked a PA officer this past March if it was cool to park there and he said yes, as long as I wasn't blocking off the crosswalk and it wasn't street sweeping day for that side of the street.

Parking Ticket Issue
#9
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Last week, I received a single parking ticket near the corner of 1st and Manila for no stopping or standing (332-23). I went online to pay @ njmc and then realized a second ticket was issued on the same day for the same exact violation by the same officer...... two minutes after the ticket on my car was issued.

Since there was only a single ticket on my car and receiving a second ticket two minutes after the first by the same officer seemed extremely fishy to me, I called the court number on the ticket. The clerk confirmed that the same officer issued both tickets at the times listed online and that it also seemed odd to her that I'd get two by the same officer in that short a span. She said my only recourse was to go to court and fight the 'phantom' second ticket.

Attending court with my schedule is a huge hassle, so any suggestions on how I can get around going to court without having to bite the bullet and pay off the phantom ticket?

It's not in JC, but a great cheese steak can be had in Manhattan. Shorty's @ 42nd and 9th is the best I've had anywhere outside of Philly. They have Philly's and Roast Pork sandwiches. The bread is also shipped in daily from Sarcone's, a Philly bakery that has been around forever that specializes in breads.

FYI: Shorty's is a bar and the music in there can be a bit loud and ridiculous depending on what time you go, but the food minimizes the distractions.

As for Victory Lager, it's very hard to find in bottles outside of Philly, but I do know that it's a bit easier to get a hold of kegs. Victory has a loyal following and if you're able to get your hands on the Lager, that alone will attract patrons to your business.

To keep this thread updated:

Parking at the Newport Center Garage is now $185 for Newport residents. I don't know how long it's been at this current rate, but I went the other day to verify if the $85 rate was still valid and it wasn't.

If you want to pay $185/mo., take a copy of your lease and a check to the Newport management office on the ground floor of the north end of the parking garage (behind the rental car office).

He's not going to take the prostitute home, where he may have a wife and/or kids, and she's not going to take him to her place. When the deed is done, out the car door goes the rubber.

Retardedly stupid as it was, it gave me a good laugh. Responding to his pea-brained insinuation that only a mexican can truly appreciate mexican food and that some hipster palace in Jersey City with shitty customer service is somehow the best tacos any of us will ever eat - anywhere - also served to remind me that if Tehuitzingo Mexican Deli on 10th Ave between 47th and 48th in the city were a bit more accessible to the PATH/subway, Taqueria would just be another Bubby's Burritos.

Never claimed to be more Mexican, just saying that I've eaten more tacos in my lifetime than probably half of your customers have combined. I've had the good fortune of living in a city with a huge Mexican population where cheap and delicious tacos are basically on every 3rd street corner. Spent a significant amount of time in Cali in areas where the taco stands are manned by grandmothers who have been cooking for 60+ years. Ate at a place in Tijuana, Mexico on several occasions named Mariscos el Maztate?o, home of the famous "tacos de camar?n enchilado," which is in an area that few tourists venture into. I won't go on about the dizzying array of taco options I over-indulged in while in Ciudad de M?xico...

Point is, service aside (which really isn't a deal breaker for me - I'm not here for the ambiance), the tacos I've had in your place were o.k. at best. The meat was really dry on both occasions and the tacos were over-spiced and over-garnished to compensate for lack of flavor from the meat. Like I told the person I ate there with the first time I had Taqueria, your place benefits greatly from lack of viable options in the immediate area and lack of taco taste buds from your clientele. When 80% of them have only Taco Bell to compare you too, then of course they're going to fawn over your place. Which is fine for you and fine for them... Merry Christmas to everyone. Vive La Taqueria Bell!

Having eaten at virtually all the cheap-o awesome taco places in Chicago and having eaten a ton of tacos in Los Angeles and San Diego, I consider myself a quasi-expert on quality tacos outside of Mexico. Both times I ate at Taqueria, I was very unimpressed with their offerings and due to lack of viable Mexican offerings in the immediate area, Taqueria gets put on pedestal it has no business being on. While I've never properly lost my temper with any of the employees (came close though), the service sucks and asking a simple question of anyone there is akin to pulling out your willie and urinating on the floor: you get the "you can't be serious" look and attitude. Asking the young lady if I needed to repeat the question slower because she might be on something didn't go over so well, but I already had my food, so oh well.

If you want really tasty tacos that are cheap and blow chi-chi's Taqueria away, head over to 10th between 47th and 48th in the city to Tehuitzingo Mexican Deli. It's a grocery in the front and a lunch counter in the back. All the truly authentic tacos in there (tongue and cow head anyone?) are around $2. Also, the staff treat you like they're happy you're patronizing their establishment. What a concept!

Maybe the use of the word "rapidly" in my statement was a bit of a stretch, but there're two things to keep in mind about the Yuan that justify my statement:

1. The yuan has appreciated 6.2% against the US dollar since June 2010, when China eliminated its fixed exchange rate against the US dollar.
2. While 1 yuan is about 15 cents US, its been widely speculated that the Chinese government still stifles the growth of the yuan in order to attract US manufacturing businesses to its shores. The Chinese govt. doesn't want the yuan to appreciate too much against the dollar, lest US manufactures take their production jobs to other Asian countries with highly favorable currency exchanges, like Vietnam and Bangladesh. China, being a highly stable country, knows that overseas manufacturing rather not deal with unstable governments.

With the downgrade in the US credit rating, the yuan and the euro stand only to gain in the world markets and the Chinese may finally let the yuan 'out of its cage.' Beijing needs to keep its people happy too, and a growth in its currency would go a long way in keeping its brightest minds in China.

You'll have to ask some Indian people that question because I'm not sure it's entirely true. My guess for why they stay is because there's a large demand for highly educated people with degrees in the sciences (medical) in the US and Indians who move to Europe, the US, and Canada can parlay their education into high paying jobs in currencies that are still much stronger than the Indian Rupee. If the Chinese are increasingly moving back home post-grad, I'm sure its because the Chinese Yuan is gaining fast on the US Dollar. America is still the land of opportunity, but you may have to take a few undesirable jobs or have five roommates to get that opportunity. For people who live on very little in their native countries, making due here isn't nearly as difficult here as it is there.

There is no need to spend money over seas as well as hire foreign born when we are suffering here in the U.S.A. So then why the fare and toll hikes ?? Lets get our priorities straight where we come first. Maybe you should rent the movie The Mouse that Roared. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mouse_That_Roared

1. You left out the best part of my original post: "I don't know if your doc changed up your meds recently or if you're just dead from the neck up..."
2. Actually, it's quite American of me to think you're a complete imbecile and to express my opinion in regards to your xenophobia in a public forum. The crutch of the weak-minded simpleton is to brand somebody "un-american" or "communist" for disagreeing with their misdirected, uneducated logic. Thank you, Mrs. McCarthy.
3. "Why the fare hikes?"
-Billions of tax dollars being wasted on un-winnable "wars on terror" each month instead of being spent on improving US infrastructure.
-WTC rebuilding and cost over-runs.
-The infrastructure of the PA needs to be desperately upgraded.
If tax dollars and private investment aren't going to subsidize these improvements, then the costs are going to be thrown back onto the consumers. Economics 101.
4. Did you ever think that the reason so many Indian people thrive in this country is because they're hard-working, highly educated individuals who will do whatever it takes to succeed and pass these ethics onto their children? The United States has fallen behind the rest of the world in innovation and education, and countries like China and India are thriving like America did post-WWII while the states are basically crumbling. We have a very high population of people in this country that have poor reading, writing, and math skills, and a poor grasp on the sciences, not because the schools are falling apart (which many are), but because they're raised by a parent (or two if they're lucky) that have the same lack of education. We have a very high % of Americans that have only one working skill set, thus making it difficult to be hired into other fields where they have no experience. Mediocrity is the standard now for many Americans and doing what's only necessary to get by and nothing further is becoming more and more the norm. Many jobs are staffed by foreign individuals because Americans wouldn't take these jobs for the pay that is being offered, and/or they view the work as being "below them" (ie. picking crops, flipping burgers, stocking shelves, etc.).

I don't know if your doc changed up your meds recently or if you're just dead from the neck up, but you do realize that Indian people make up a significant number of PATH riders, and that they'd feel the pain of the fare hike just like any other person would, 'American' or not, right? That a significant number of people who ride the PATH aren't 'American' by birth and have accents that are unlike your own? If you were born and raised in this area, there's a very good chance that you have that annoying "Joy-zee" and "cwah-fee" accent that makes me want to stab myself in the ear with a q-tip.
Here's an idea: instead of directing your anger at those who don't look and sound like you (which may very well be a great thing), direct your anger at the crooked, corporate interest prioritizing politicians that people keep electing into office that have turned our country into what it is today.

And the people that drive up and down Jersey Ave like its the autobahn because they're too stupid to realize that even though it's a main street, it's still in a very residential part of the city.

Outside of these three things, the area is great. I moved here from outside the state a bit over four months ago and often make the trek to/from Manhattan late night. I've lived in suburbs where I've felt more unsafe than I do here. My girlfriend has walked alone late night and has never encountered a problem or felt remotely unsafe. Just like any place you'd live, never let your guard down and always be alert of your surroundings and you'll be fine.

As far as the PATH goes, the debate between Grove St. and Newport is one I often contend with. Distancewise, Newport is closer to the area than Grove St. is, BUT in order to access Newport, you have to cross Marin Ave, walk through a parking garage, then navigate through a mall, cross two main streets, and then once inside the station, make a small trek to the PATH platforms. While Grove St. is a bit further away, it takes the same amount of time to get there without having to jump through the hoops that is required of using Newport station. Plus, Grove St. PATH has quite a few benefits that Newport doesn't:
1. Ample places to lock up a bicycle
2. Direct access to WTC (only 2 stops away and no transfer required)
3. If you've had a bit too much to drink, you don't have to make the Bataan Death March up the walkway that leads from the platform to the exit at Newport.
4. Grove St always has foot traffic coming and going no matter the time of day and is in a much more transparent area if you're walking by yourself.
5. 24-Hour Dunkin Donuts right outside the station if you have the hungries.
Basically, I only use Newport if the weather is inclimate.
