BTW -
Does anyone know if cops on construction detail are acting in their official capacity? In other words, are they cops, or just juice heads in funny costumes? The reason I ask is because invariably, cops "directing traffic" in and around downtown construction sites are the cause of more chaos and danger than any conditions of the construction. I've been: 1. directed into the direct path of an oncoming light rail (while being angrily yelled at by "directing" PO) 2. left to languish while PO talked on phone before finally deciding to direct traffic 3. nearly hit by cars based on inept traffic control by PO. Each and every time, the PO was basically distracted by something - another PO, T&A, a blowing plastic bag, etc. So, are they actually supposed to be doing something besides sucking down money? Because if not, then it would make more sense for them to just like go sit someplace and do their extorting out of sight, and leave the traffic control to the professionals.

While watching a hole in the ground for $360 today I hit on a great idea. If you are really that jealous of the cops working off duty jobs here's what to do. Find a spot where a cop is working and the crew has a manhole open. When the cops not paying attention "accidentally" fall headfirst into the manhole. Then you can sue for millions. Bring one of your friends with you too. It will work because of the liability issue. As a point of information the money the city skims off the top from these jobs goes directly into the general fund. I don't know where the four million dollar number came from but just today the city collected $1480 from one district and things are really slow right now. Its a fact that the city has collected $2400 a day five days a week during busy times and that is one district. Its a pretty big number and no one really knows where it goes. Or where it gets spent. Instead of whining about us wouldn't it be more productive to turn your anger toward city hall and the gross mismanagement occurring there?
They threatened to lay off 82 cops and whether you want to believe it or not your QOL would have taken a serious hit. Where is the outrage that they claimed not to have the money for the cop that will answer any call unflinchingly but found 3.2 million for the ex BA's new firm to do the revaluation? Or the no bid maintenance contract awarded to campaign donors? Your impotent rage directed at the PD is wasting energy because we are a necessary evil. Where you can make a difference is by demanding accountability from this disgrace of an administration running this city into the ground.

NJ used to have it, NY does have it and that's the big reason more productions choose Long Island, Westchester or Rockland when they want to get out of the boroughs. As for JC type streetscapes they can just go to Brooklyn or Queens. For small Indie productions the cop fees might be more of an issue, but small productions don't bring much to the area economically anyway. Right now the tax credit program is on hold, having been passed by the state leg. and waiting for Christie to sign it (or not).

JSleaze, the fact is the city ymade 4 million dollars off of police officer's off duty work. You can try blurrying the facts any way you want.Some details have more then 1 officer working you also have bank details, high school sporting events and if a marked radio car is utiliuzed the city gets money for that as well.And by the way there's 52 weeks in a year not 50

I don't think so. There was very little construction last year - I'd be surprised if the city got $500,000 from this stuff.

Its amazing how the public sector continues to abuse its power. They have no shame and only care about themselves. When theres a real crime they are no where to be found, but if you on your cell phone in the car they are all over. How could the possibly be giving themselves raises in this economy? At least Nidia Lopez voted no I give her credit for that.

What a screwy city we live - We make abatements for developers, make cut-backs to services, reduce staff as way of lay-offs but ok a pay increase, or better still dictate the pay increase, for police (off-duty).
It's now more lucrative to work off-duty then doing any overtime for the city. It amazes me that we provide free training and authorise these guys, but get no return when they work for themselves using that training. I maintain that off-duty police should not be wearing the Jersey City Police uniforn or any of JCPD equipment (radios etc) Businesses that require this type of service performed by off-duty police should be provided with a cheaper option for the same service and the authority bestowed on Police should not be a monoply for their exclusive benefit - Legislation should chance whereby security staff and security companies can tender / quote for such openings. GUESS WHO ELSE MIGHT WANT MORE MONEY !

Next thing you know we get the Cunningham administration, an ex-cop, and we have to use 6, 8 and even 10 cops on a job. Most if not all the cops just stand around doing nothing. Meanwhile the film shoot is bleeding more and more money. Those construction cops usually sit in their personal vehicles and read the paper. Liability removed! Yeah right.

vigilante, you might want to check your facts about why there no longer movies or tv shows kilming here.If you believe its because the police officer's make 50 dollars an hour your sadly mistaken.For example Law and Order SVU filmed in North Bergen until last year when the fees became extremely exorbinant. And as a point there is no police officer that worked that detail.And it's not outsourcing overtime ,the fact is police officer's are hired by the construction companies to limit their liability.If they have a police officer working the liability is removed from the construction companies and therefore it is far cheaper to hire a police officer than pay insurance premiums. All at no cost to the taxpayer in fact the city gets five dollars per hr that every officer works. Last year Jersey city recieved four million dollars !! Now eliminate the off duty work and were does the city get that 4 million dollars answer by raising property taxes!!

This is just a way to outsource overtime pay. Ever wonder why you don't see that many film shoots in Jersey City the past few years? It's because the city will make film shoots use way more cops than they'd ever need. Production companies used to shoot here because it was a little cheaper and a little easier. Now it's just not cost effective so they stay in NYC.

Jersey City gives raises to cops who work off-duty providing security at construction sites, banks, and outside bars and restaurants
Thursday, February 10, 2011 By TERRENCE T. McDONALD JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Jersey City has given cops a raise - cops who work off-duty, that is. Police officers performing off-duty security for outside companies, or for the city, were given a boost in their off-duty pay last month when the City Council approved the changes that take effect Tuesday. The pay increases vary depending on the type of work being performed. Cops working off-duty on private construction sites will make $45 per hour, an increase of $10 from the previous rates. Next January, the rate will increase to $50 per hour. Cops who work on film sets or outside bars and restaurants will see a $10 to $15 boost, to $55 per hour. Meanwhile, off-duty work at banks, financial institutions, and commercial spaces over 4,000 square feet will pay $35 per hour, up from $25. In 2012, this rate moves to $40 per hour. City officials have been discussing the rate increases for about a year to make Jersey City equivalent with other municipalities, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said. The ordinance regulating pay rates for off-duty cops hadn't been amended since November 2008. The new amendments were adopted 7-1-0 by the City Council on Jan. 26, with Councilwoman Nidia Lopez voting "no" and Councilwoman Viola Richardson absent.
