it looked close to being open the other night when I walked by it but still didnt see any customers inside. They still have the giant posters in the window indicating they are looking for staff.

I'd assume those will go away when it actually opens.

I just walked by and was horrified to see the faux stone paneling on the outside that looks better suited for a diner in Paramus. Also saw the renderings of the inside, looks sleek and modern. Eck.

I will feel better if it's open 24 hours or at least until 3 am or so. Alas, it seems as if they are going to be geared towards the Exchange Place workforce, so it'll probably close at 10 pm.

I'm curious to find out which diner in Newark they have. Tops is good but it's actually in East Newark (Hudson County). I liked the old Tops too, before they renovated it many, many years ago. The food remained consistently good, however. I do miss the Flamingo.

While the pictures do seem pretty upscale it will still be a diner Menu.I spoke to the owners who also own a diner in Newark.
They just felt that the new decor would attract more DT
buisness people.

The old South City Grill in Newport is also under renovation to become a Diner. This one is owned by the people who own the Skylark diner in Edison.Full seperate take out section and Bakery will be in that space.

I go to the Miss America Diner on West Side for my Greasy Spoon fix.

Jesus, a fancy restaurant??

Amazing that downtown JC doesn't have a no frills, greasy-spoon type of diner.

It's not going to be the same...the flamingo was an institution and whoever bought this place ruined that...best of luck with the new restaurant though.

This place is coming back to life, btw, but not as the Flamingo Diner, though I can't remember the name. It says it's the "something Diner" but the pictures they have on the outside depict a pretty fancy restaurant, so I don't think we'll have anything even close to the Flamingo.

I've passed by it a few times over the last couple of weeks and it's coming along pretty quickly, seems like it will be open pretty soon.

I saw some guys in there the other morning doing work, so it might have resumed, or maybe the space has been sold. Didn't bother to ask them but if I see them again I'll try to find out.

New owner. They're doing some renovation, and I saw a sign for construction (gas piping) but no idea what's going on. Maybe the gas piping means they're going to move the kitchen to a more sensible place.

Renovating the space, or a new owner but same bar? The bar itself is classic, I really hope it doesn't change much physically.

Brownstone has some amazing pancakes, but they're not the greasy spoon kinda diner I need.

Also, those empty storefronts at Grove are going to stay empty for a long time, as well as the space above. Apparently the landlord is a real dick and has very strict expectations about what will go there. Plus he's asking a load of money.

Yeah, I really like the food at the Brownstone, but it's so bizarre to me that they close at 11 pm. That almost makes it not even a diner. I don't think I've ever, ever seen a diner, even in the suburbs, that closes before 1 am or so. Many, if not most, are open until 2 am or 3 am, if not 24 hours.

I understand that Brownstone is not trying to cater to that demographic, but there is a large need for a venue to cater to that demographic in Downtown JC. I've never seen more young people in JC than I do now.

I used to get breakfast food in the middle of the night at the Flamingo-- and for like $4. Tried to get some dinner last Friday night at 11:15 and it was nearly impossible. Everyone's kitchen was closed. I don't mind the Brownstone but they close at 11pm. It would just be nice to have another 24 hour dining option somewhere downtown. I'm not always able to drive to other areas for some food.

First there was two diners nearby if you lived downtown, Flamingo and Tunnel Diner, now there's none. Tunnel Diner was a little inaccessible but I loved it, good food, good prices, old fashion service. The Brownstone is alright but charges premium prices for almost everything, it's not on the greasy spoon model of Flamingo. There's Telly's across from Flamingo and the little Italian deli-style place half a block away, saving those two there's nothing with any soul in that whole area, just BS gentrified, premium-priced crap that came off a conveyor belt (e.g. Van Whatever Coffee House across from Flamingo).

At $50/sq ft. don't hold your breath.

but were they even working? I don't think I saw a tiny bit of work in that entire time. Also couldn't it just be that their construction permits were for 4 months and expired?

They have a "stop work order" because they were working w/o permits. real smart, especially right across the street from the building dept.

It's been what now, 4 months? I saw a stop work order on the window today. Looks like there hasn't been any work done on it since the first week anyway. I hope it isn't shut down for good =(

that McD's is the worst. I've actually contacted corporate to comment in the past.

to stay on topic, I miss the Flamingo too.
I want their sliced steak sandwich now.

McD's is not 24 hours, despite what the sign on the window might say. I've come home many a late night to see them closed.

I was seeing the new owners every now and then.Havent seen them in a while. They completely gutted everything to the floor joyce's. You can see through the window on Montgomery Street. It looks like they ran out of money and probably got hassaled for permits from the city. I lived in the neighborhood my whole life. The Flaingo should have been the first thing to go. It was gross. But I miss it at times. The new owners are from NYC and had no idea what a Landmark it was. Oh well. We need a 24 diner Downtown.

Does anyone have the inside scoop on the progress there? The sign said it'd be closed for 3 months but it's been more like 4. It's the only place to eat downtown that's open past 10 PM, not to mention the only place downtown that doesn't charge $10 or $15 for a hamburger. Sorely missed.

I also miss the Flamingo, but to be fair, there is also Ibby's which is open until at least midnight on the weekends (used to be 1:00 am?), McDonald's which is 24 hours, and about 3 or 4 bodegas which are open 24 hours where you can get a sandwich.

Does anybody know if the Flamingo will still be 24 hours? I really hope so.
