Of course it is possible. The question is how much it would cost.

A clear tube-like tunnel laid on the bottom of the river wouldn't cost that much. You could have two even - one for walkers, one for bicyclists. It's been done on a smaller scale (mostly in Asia) - it would have to be a lot cheaper than tunneling under the river bed. That said - I really don't know the mechanics involved or whether something like this is possible.

I would like to see a pedestrian bridge to NYC as well.. But the reality of it is, its just not that easy. One you will have to build a bridge high enough for all the boat traffic to pass under. Then You are going to have to build steps that might end up being pretty high at both exits, so bikers would have to carry up and down the bike, unless you create a ramp, but even that would depend on the height of the bridge. Finally it?s the cost.. Why would the Government build something when they already have the infrastructure to tax you for interstate travel? Unless some Private Company comes around and foots the bill, the pedestrian bridge isn?t happening.. Even then the company most likely will toll you, so why even bother in the first place?

I would love being able to bike into the city. A pedestrian route in the tunnel would be depressing and I don't think anyone would want to do it. Even biking would be a bit weird. There's a lot of exhaust and nasty stuff down there I don't think I'd want to inhale. Ever look at the roof of the tunnel? Covered in soot, which is why they close down lanes so often to clean it.

Agreed! I have done the GWB route commute. It is fun and nice, but a bit too much during the Summer. If you sweat a lot (and who doesn't when biking in the Summer??) you will arrive at work drenched. My best time is 90 minutes to midtown. I live across from LSP, though. I wish it was easier to get from JC to Fort Lee. Neither one of my "go to" routes is particularly friendly to bikers.

I live in the Heights as well and use to bike (Cannondale F300) into the City via the GWB; that's right the GWB. It would take me 2hrs max to get to the WTC. Lots of fun!

http://www.bikejc.org/ http://www.bicycletimesmag.com/ I would log onto to the above links. The Jersey City bicycle organization will be helpful in answering your questions. Also the Bike Times link is a magazine publication you can pick up at a local newsstand full of informitive articles about bicycle commuting.

LOL
IF ONLY! I live in the Heights (Sherman Avenue & Franklin Street), according to Google Maps it is 4.8 miles from my place to my office my City Hall Park in Manhattan, and should take 13 minutes... of course, what with traffic this will never happen. Still, my commute routinely takes 1 hour to 1 1/4 hours on the #87 bus and the PATH, only slightly faster than walking. NJ seems to be so averse to ANYTHING that makes the state more mass transit/bike friendly - does anyone imagine this ever happening? Who should we write to?

It looks like he rode the center line from Manhattan to 12th and 14th Streets in Jersey City, then he took PATH back from Hoboken:

Holland Tunnel 80 years old today
Nov 12th 1927 The first automobile tunnel, the Holland Tunnel between New York City and Jersey City beneath the Hudson River, is opened. It was designed to take 1,900 cars every hour.

A pedestrian route would be interesting but I'm not sure how many people would want to walk that distance in a confined space, high speed people movers could make it worthwhile but I'm sure they would be broken most of the time.

Fastest way to New Jersey
Bike courier Brendan McMullen displays the summons he received for riding through the Holland Tunnel NY Minute's courier company's courier of the month knew exactly what to do when a client's error resulted in a last minute dash to Jersey City: Courier 135, Brendan, picked up what he thought was a rush delivery to Hudson Street in the city. When he arrived, he realized it was really going to Jersey City. The client realized their error, but the package had to get to Jersey City in less than 30 minutes. Brendan raced down Varick Street on his Huffy 10 speed and took a right turn into the Holland Tunnel. He was traveling faster than the traffic in the tunnel. The Port Authority Police were not amused and arrested him as soon as he entered New Jersey. He's headed to court next month. We'll pay the ticket. Courier 135 is not the first to show that bicycling may very well be the fastest way to get through the Holland Tunnel. Check out this video by the Neistat Brothers, and please note: Streetsblog does not recommend that you try this yourself. It's 5:30 pm on a Friday night. I'm on Prince Street in Manhattan. I'm headed towards Varick Street. I just got the 1010 WINS JamCam traffic report saying that there's a 35-minute delay in the Holland Tunnel. I'm just going to go show those fools how dumb they are to try to drive in this town... Click to see article
