I've had good experiences with Joe's Auto Electric (41 Maxwell, off of Columbus). They were quick, efficient and honest!

I need a new muffler (or tail pipe). Or both.

I've gone to A-1 Autoworks for a number of things. I never really felt like they were trying to fish for other things to fix, but I've read lots of reviews where people had terrible experiences. Times are lean and I don't need phantom issues with my car.

Does anyone have a trusted auto repair person in JC? I live in Paulus Hook, so it would be nice if it was downtown (so I could walk home from the drop off and walk to pick up). But I'm willing to go elsewhere if it means I can trust the shop.

Thanks!

Brewster what is it doing? Transmissions almost never go bad anymore. Did you have it pumped out and refilled?

There is also Lucas Transmission -- I know, I know -- but their crazy products often really do work.

http://lucasoil.hodgsoncorp.com/slipping_transmission.htm

I had a 1999 Caravan I used as a work truck (without rear seats) for a number of years -- I foolishly got the transmission rebuilt when it was acting up (it would only do the 3rd gear - safety mode thing) -- my mechanic at the time talked me into rebuilding -- but it was really just the linkage being out of adjustment -- I only found this out after I had the transmission rebuilt -- because the problem continued. Have someone check your linkage - if you can't find anyone else I might ask Danny at Wrench Brothers ( Newark Ave & Brunswick) to take a look at the linkage.

I don't think I would ever rebuild a transmission again -- if it is that -- then maybe just move on!

If you want a cheap deal then this Wednesday go to the Brooklyn Navy Yard - and take cash - (click these links below)

A few mentioned Village on 4th and Brunswick and AM on 6th? These would be ideal, but wasn't sure if they were still recommended.

Thanks!

Yes, A & M is still recommenced... I just had them replace my radiator, entire exhaust system and clean all the injectors. I have an Altima which doesn't do well with generic replacement parts and wanted only top of the lines parts that were a step down from the original factory parts. I bought most of my parts myself from RockAuto and had them install it.

My 2001 Honda Accord AC does not work, it actually broke on the hottest day of the year.

Does anyone know of a good place to go to get it checked out and fixed. I went to Firestone and they were charging $60 to look at the car but that didnt include fixing anything.

Let me know. It's quite hot sitting on leather seats in the summer without AC.

A friend of mine had a noise in the engine, had some jerk from hoboken tell him he needed a new fuel pump and it turned out to be something that had just gotten loose in there and needed to be tightened. When the mechanic called him and told him the good news, my friend said he didn't want any money when he picked up the car!
Say what???????????

My friend was shocked and tells me he gave him $25 anyway!

If I had a used car, I would be going to him, LOL!

The name escapes me. I think it's A&J. It's on 6th street right before the exit to the car wash on the left hand side.

Ray and Tom from NPR's Cartalk have a great website - you can read new care reviews, repair records, on and on. The site also has a MECHANIC area where you can search for a local mechanic and read reviews.

I've used Baja Vega in Hoboken and was very impressed with their honesty, service level, price, etc. You could do us all a favor and rate your mechanic after service.

A quick search of JC, 2 mile radius, no particular car make specified - listed the following results, good luck!

Hey,

Thanks for the tip, Howie helped me out, cleaned out my sunroof drains for $165 which seemed fair. Showed me what was wrong as well so I know what to look for if it happens again.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Isaac Seals on windshields and auto glass might be a rather cheap fix -- you should talk to a glass guy first before you talk to an auto body shop -- maybe let Howie (owner of Central Auto glass) look at it and give you a price. I mostly only like places where I am talking to the mechanic -- I hate when there is a manager guy and the workers are hidden -- but it is funny, I only go to Sears Auto center for tires because they will rotate them for free for life and repair them/plug them for only $3-- if you ever get a nail. They also have locations open late and weekends in all states - so they are good if traveling -- they ave some good brands as well . I like the free parking at the mall here too.

Though next time I might try www.tirerack.com better and cheaper tires - they do some sort of drop-ship to a place on Communipaw.

In the same vain -- I also only go to Pepboys for batteries - again because they are everywhere and open late and on weekends - but I sometimes even put the batteries in myself so I don't have to wait.

Thanks. Naturally it's way down there! I used to use a mechanic on Culver, what a PITA getting back from there after dropping the car and then getting back there. I sometimes would take the bike and bike to the light rail and take it back downtown if I didn't feel like biking the whole way.

Summit Auto... (Corner Chestnut and Pavonia)

Jersey City, NJ 07306

First rate mechanics, fair pricing, and the cleanest garage that I have ever seen.

Years ago, my Toyota Avalon was stolen and parts removed. The rear brakes and axle were damaged (idiots were doing donuts and hit a curb). In three days, my car was as good as new and it cost less than a 1000 dollars. The dealer quoted me 2800 for the same work.

Another poster mentioned Tune and Tire. My brother uses Tune and Tire on Communipaw and swears by them.

I've used Tune & Tire on Communipaw, they have been honest and fair. If you are getting an oil change and want the on-board computer reset you may have to go back to the dealer, not many repair shops have the reset equipment to reset the on-board computer.
