From Steve Fulop's email today:

JC1TV
This proposed ordinance sets guidelines, policies, and priorities for JC1TV so the public will have access to information on city happenings that is currently not shown. The ordinance requires that all city council meetings be televised live (gavel to gavel) and rebroadcast four subsequent times prior to the next council meeting. Currently city council meetings and voting sessions are never televised. Furthermore, the ordinance also sets boundaries for elimination of political use of JC1TV.

I think an important step in solving the city?s problems is creating transparency around what is happening in city hall. Elected officials should be proud of how they vote and should have nothing to hide. This is a common-sense reform, which will open the curtains and give people access to the workings of their government.

What about a fundraiser to cover the costs? How hard would it be to find 200 supportive people to kick in $15 to $20 each. What an awesome message that would send, no? The part about "manpower" is non-sense: the meeting is being covered by "manpower" whether it is being shown live or taped.

I'll contribute $20 to the pot.

With all seriousness though, you should tell Fulop before they vote on it tomorrow. They might still use the censorship excuse, but it would save cost. Not the best quality but cost wise they could even have 3 or 4 set up.

The "wires" seems to be a huge issue. Can you imagine the cost of running wires to the nearest internet connection?

In the article it said:
Quote:
Morrill said in order to show meetings live, cable would have to be run from council chambers on the second floor to the television studio on the third floor in City Hall.

Jersey City Council meetings won't be televised live

So they agree it should be televised but not live.

Quote:
The issue of live coverage came down to cost and ability to edit content, such as profane language during public comment.

So we will be seing a watered down version of the meeting. They will probably edit out all the people speaking.

Quote:
She said that along could cost $3,000 to $4,000, not including manpower to film the meetings, which can go late into the night.

Yea, and they are really trying to save money right now.

Quote:
Fulop said he could live with not having the meetings air live, but felt that if the city could air all it?s parades, all meetings could be recorded and aired before the next meeting.

I think its a good idea to broadcast these meetings but I think there are far too many people who simply don't care, especially among the non-JC property owning folk.

I want to make some corrections. The city does broadcast the caucus meetings, it does not broadcast the council meetings. Fulop is talking about the council meetings. Also, when I tape a council meeting, it is seen on public access channel 51 on Comcast, Channel 1 is the city's public access. Although, the city does allow some private groups to use that station. By comparison, the city of Bayonne broadcasts all public meetings: council meetings, and other public meetings. Chiappione pushed for this.

Putting the meetings on TV is a good idea but, as Yvonne said, I do not have Comcast.

Another option, to be done in addtion to Comcast, would be to make a podcast out of each meeting and placing them on ITunes. Many have IPods.

I also remember watching the boring Council Meetings. The members would sit there with a sack of papers in front of them and they would go through them in minutes approving everything. It was interesting when a developer came in to give a presentation.

Those were the closed meetings. I never recall the public meetings being televised, live or otherwise.

In 1998 when Mayor Schundler negotiated the 15 year Comcast deal I think he made them throw in a JC public access channel. Don?t you remember ?Bret TV? his call-in show? It was pretty good.

It's trully a shame that such a large and developing city cannot have a functional system in getting the message accross.

It would be nice if the meeting was live, but I wouldn't mind if it was posted on the JC1TV site (in a timely matter) aswell. They show the meetings between the counsilpersons, why not show the meeting with the residents? I think they are afraid of an uprising. Surely Willie Flood would stay up if Fox would air even a few minutes of it. I wish Arnold Diaz (Shame! Shame! Shame!) would come back and chase a few of them around the building again.

Don't all cable systems have to provide community access TV? Isn't it the same programming across all systems?

The Jersey City Municipal Channel is also shown on FIOS channel 37.

Could Willie Flood stay awake for the whole meeting if it was televised.

You should do it, BCB! The first step in draining this swamp is shining a light on it. Our swamp creatures have been left to breed in the dark for far too long. Be that light!!

Councilman Steven Fulop plans to introduce an ordinance at the council's meeting next week calling for meetings to be televised live on JC1TV, the city's cable channel.
