Specifics would be appreciated. Thank you.

He was "specifically" arrested for corruption of his "nuts and bolts" job.

The sting was from only one guy wearing a wire. How many other bribes has he taken to vote any way on any variety of issues.

The evidence isn't circumstantial. He is on tape. Let's say he stays at his job and is then found guilty. Should every vote between now and then be redone?

As someone who was a strong supporter of Healy's team, and worked on Guy Catrillio's campaign, how did you feel when your man took a bribe? Be Specific.

Well if the County felt he could not continue to work in his job under the circumstances, why the hell would/should we.

He is arrogant and a fool.

Take the time to read the transcripts avilable on line from the Department of Justice site. It shows the defendant's contempt, arrogance, stupidity & greed very clearly with little wiggle room at all. They should resign NOW!!!

My original post was quite specific. The public has no confidence in a council run by someone under federal indictment for corruption and he will be totally preoccupied with his legal defense and have no time for public service. A federal indictment is not a traffic infraction.

Trying to keep one's ass out of jail takes a lot of time, energy, and money. His council position will not be his top priority for a while. But I guess it never was.

Are you serious, just plain dumb, paid by Vega, have him in your family or in your bed?

He is there because of public trust, and only because of public trust. These complaints call his ability to govern with the public's trust in mind rather than his upstate or out of country mansions into question.

Also..just an FYI...there would be no federal complaint and he would not have been arrested if he did not engage in illegal behavior. If he got caught smoking weed in one of his mansions, that would be different but he got busted selling an office/vote which really does not belong to him but to the people who elected him.

Other than Fulop, the silence on that damn city council is deafening and very telling. But hey, what do I know, I am just a guy with a brain and common sense?

Actually, it must stand. If there are consequences for merely an indictment, then nothing prevents legal agencies from making malicious indictments.

I agree with Bogart. Whether Vega is innocent or guilty is a matter for the courts to decide, and he is entitled to his day in court. However, as has been the case in many situations regarding political figures (i.e. Eliot Spitzer), it does not matter if you are innocent or guilty. What matters is whether you can function in full capacity to serve the taxpayers which elected you. In instances such as these, it is clear. The answer is no. If I were not able to fully function in my job, I would be fired.

There are codes of ethics governing federal prosecutors. If they use the indictment process without evidence as a political weapon they will be fired, disbarred and prosecuted.

Covetalker, like the rest of them, he has no hint of honor. These people go into politics so they can feed from the trough. He, like the others, were not honest, good-intentioined men who were tempted by vast quantities of money. They sold the city short for a few thousand bucks.....pathetic.

None of them has the grace or class to resign. I'll be at the meeting.

+1 Covetalker. And to expand slightly - these are federal allegations with taped conversations. This isn't one disgruntled local agency going after another. Although it is possible there is an explanation as to how Mr. Vega might not have broken a law, his mere presence in that conversation (as well as JC Offical #4's in another conversation) has rendered them unfit for office. There is no more basic breech of the public's trust.

Of utmost importance: if at all possible - ATTEND THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 AT 10 AM. Let Mr. Vega know what you think. Whether or not you agree with the call for his resignation. Be heard.

The federal allegations are serious, and -- with them -- the public trust has been broken. Council President Vega should immediately resign from elective office, since the accusation compromises -- borrowing language from the criminal charges, "colors" -- his ability to act as a public servant.

The legal case will continue for some time. Mr. Vega will receive his due process, presumption of innocence, and ultimate day in court to face his accuser(s). Mr. Vega's full-time employer -- Hudson County, where he helms the Parks Dept. -- has suspended him, even though the DOJ's charges relate to his Council (city) job, not his Parks (county) job.

But -- if Mr. Vega does not voluntarily step down soon from Municipal Council, for the sake of the City he professes to love and serve -- Mr. Vega's clouded status will paralyze local governance. His every action will be suspect and tainted. Already, in retrospect, people question so many of the recent pro-developer Council approvals. Going forward, until Vega (and any other like defendants) step away, all decisions will be judged as compromised.

Everything about this mess is sad, especially if the charges prove true (and the tip of the iceberg at 280 Grove Street). Even a hint of honor would demand that Vega resign. With that, the City can attend to its affairs, and he may concentrate on his pending legal matters.

Jersey City Council President Vega, charged in corruption sting, says he won't resign
by Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal
Monday July 27, 2009, 10:31 AM
Jersey Journal file photoMariano Vega, the Jersey City city council president, said today he will not resign his position.

Jersey City City Council President Mariano Vega, charged on Thursday in the probe that netted 44 New Jersey officials and others on corruption and money laundering charges, said this morning he has no plans on resigning.

"The events from this past Thursday are as shocking to me as everyone else," se said in a statement before the council caucus. "I am not guilty of the allegations. In our system of justice we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. I do not intend to resign as council president nor as councilman."

Full coverage of the probe.

The probe ensnared a number of Jersey City officials and touched on the Mayor Jerramiah Healy's office. Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini and Building Inspector John Guarini were among the city workers arrested Thursday.

The criminal complaint against Beldini, Ed Cheatam and Jack Shaw says that Dwek, the government's cooperating witness, met with Healy twice.

The complaint also says that "Shaw had given the 'checks' to (Healy) at the previous Saturday's campaign fundraiser, but indicated that defendant Shaw had told (Healy) that the checks came from (Dwek). Defendant Shaw then remarked '[a]nd [defendant Beldini] knew it.' "

On March 24, the feds say, Beldini acknowledged she received $10,000 from Dwek, and there was the promise of another $10,000 from Dwek.
