The head of the JCIA came to the Harsimus Cove Neighborhood Association meeting a couple of months ago. Someone asked this question and he said as long as it has a triangle they would take it.

As for the question about whether or not they actually recycle - he said the money they receive from recycling nearly covers the cost of trash pickup and they would like people to recycle to the point where they are picking up recycling twice a week and garbage just once.

I just put anything plastic in. If they don't care to give us more specific instructions, I'm not going to worry about it.

I would love some local media to look inside the JC recycling program to confirm that things really are being recycled and not dumped in a landfill (or worse).

There's this on their website: http://www.jciaonline.org/recsteps.php

but it doesn't really answer your question because it is pretty vague. For instance it mentions "food containers", but in NYC many of those are not recyclable (like yogurt containers).

Anyone know which plastics are recycled in JC? (Numbers on bottom of container, usually.)

I've tried calling the number on the JCIA site, and the Waste Management contractor *that* number suggests; but have just gotten recordings.

thank you in advance.

They no longer allow plastic bags to be used for recycling (it hinders the process).

Here is a link to JCIA (Jersey City Incinerator Authority) website and a copy of their guideline (see below):

http://www.jciaonline.org/recsteps.php

TWO SMALL STEPS FOR YOU
TWO GIANT STEPS FOR JERSEY CITY

STEP 1:
Don't put your recyclables in plastic bags.

* Putting recyclables in plastic bags seriously hinders the recycling process.
* Put all recyclables in large plastic containers or any other large reusable containers, such as large garbage pails.

STEP 2:
Combine milk/juice cartons and drink boxes with plastics, not paper.

* Combine these items with plastics, glass, and cans -- not paper items. (See chart)

Simply separate all your recyclables into 2 categories:
CATEGORY 1:
All plastics, glass, cans in one container CATEGORY 2:
All paper items in one container (or bundle)
Plastics Includes:
? Milk Cartons
? Drink Boxes
? Plastic Milk Containers
? Food Containers
? Household Cleaner Containers
? Laundry Detergent Bottles
? Shampoo Bottles

Glass Includes:
? Soda Bottles
? Beer Bottles
? Food Jars
? Liquor Bottles

All Cans Except Paint Cans
(see Special Recyclable)
Paper Includes:
? Newspapers
? Magazines
? Junk Mail
? School Paper
? Office Paper
? Computer Paper
? Telephone Books
? All Cardboard Boxes & Corrugated Boxes
? Cereal Boxes
? Pasta Boxes
? Laundry Detergent Boxes

My old landlord emailed me this a while back for recycling guidelines.

Resized Image

At my new place, we use clear plastic bags for the glass and plastic since we don't have any place to keep bins. We've never had a problem with them leaving things behind. Oh, and the clear bags are available at the dollar stores on Newark Ave-- $0.99 for a box of 12. Easier to use than plastic shopping bags too.

We just moved about 10 blocks within the Grove St area, and I am now thoroughly confused about recycling.

Previously: No recycling of any plastics other than # 1 & 2, no recycling any cardboard other than corrugated (no cereal boxes or other shiny paperboard), and all plastics & glass go into clear plastic bags. This was picked up no problem every week, and fell in line with Hudson County Improvement Authority's guidelines for recycling.

In the new apt: signs posted say to put the shiny paperboard such as cereal or juice containers with the plastics, that we can recycle detergent & shampoo bottles, and all recyclables must go in reusable plastic bins, absolutely no plastic bags. This falls in line with Jersey City Incinerator Authority's guidelines for recycling.

What's the deal???

Does anyone know where to go to drop off the garbage? I'm going away for a week and don't want to leave the smelly garbage.

From the Hudson County Improvement Authority only plastic with #1 & #2 are recycled.

Commingled: Each municipality in Hudson County
collects commingled glass, food and beverage containers,
auminum cans, tin or bi-metal cans, and plastic
containers (#1 and #2 only). All containers should be
rinsed (it is not necessary to remove caps, lids or
labels) and placed together in a waterproof receptacle.

If you mix recyclables with regular garbage or vice versa you are eligible for a fine. If your trashcan is not empty the following morning thats a hint.

Hey all:

I've got a mess of old paint cans that have accumulated in the basement of my condo building over the years. I know that they need to be dropped off on route 440, does anyone have any experience with this?

I know I have to show proof of residency in order to drop them off, but is there a limit to how many I can bring? I tried calling the JCIA and have had no luck finding someone to speak to. I would like to know before I load all of them (30-40) into my car.

Also, does anyone have any idea where one could dispose of some lumber that has paint on it?

Guys,

I experienced the same problems. Recycling picked up one week and not the other. Waste Management (WM) is contracted to collect the recycling, it then gets dropped off at a recycling company 5-10 minutes away in Jersey City. If you call WM directly (JC will have the phone number to call), they will send out a smaller collection truck the next day and perform the pick up. They actually went into our rubbermaid storage area and emptied our bin that was wasnt dumped the night before. If enough people continue to call them, the service should improve. Since I called WM a month ago, we haven't had a problem. If you have cardboard &/or newsprint you can drop it off at Galaxy Recycling, 25 New York Street, Jersey City. However, glass is recycled at a cost to the city and to the recycling company, so they would charge for this to be dropped off. They off set the glass recycling by making money on aluminum cans, plastic bottles, Milk jugs, newspaper, and cardboard. Most of this is processed and exported to China. The reason they prefer to not have recyclables bagged is it cannot be processed through the equipment used to sort the bottles/cans/plastics from the paper/cardboard. it is quite a process.

Is it just me or does it seem that recycles make up a larger portion of the weekly refuse. I think pick up should be 2x per week. look around at all of the overflowing recycle bins in the area. I know it wont happen because of all the budget shortfalls but....

I have the same question, or at least a similar one. Specifically, I need to get rid of some old fencing. Any advice?

Hi everybody...I need to start my spring cleaning and need to get rid of a lot of big items. Can I just leave them out on Monday or do I need to call the sanitation dept. for a special pickup?

Yeah, sadly this is the best I could find for recycling guidelines on what specifically should be recycled:

http://www.jciaonline.org/wastes.php
http://www.jciaonline.org/recsteps.php
http://www.jciaonline.org/recspecial.php

Someone at the Jersey City Incinerator Authority should turn this into a poster.

Yes, those posters would be ideal. Pictures mean no guessing is involved.

I lived in Queens and two years ago they made those posters into 5x7 refridgerator magnets. It was so easy to refer to.

I have a pamphlet that specifically says "All homeowners and tenants, including occupants of multi-family housing units" must recycle. You may want to ask the HCIA for a bunch of copies of the pamphlet entitled "A Quick Guide to Recycling in Hudson County" so you can give them to your tenants. You can also request posters from the HCIA for you to put in your garbage room for reinforcement.

I hate when people don't recycle too. My office building wasn't recycling and I reported them.

HEY thanks so much!!!! I am glad I got this info guys!
By the way JC went on night schedule now...the trash gets picked up at midnight over by my house!
Now I can show the tenants its the law!

i live in an apartment building and i'm almost positive that not everyone recycles... you just honestly have to do your best to get the garbage seperated... they have different bins and designated areas of where to leave what...

SIDE NOTE:

Does anyone know about any type of regulations of when the garbage/recycling is picked up? i don't see them in the morning (7-8 AM) anymore and i think it may have to do with the traffic it holds up at such a rush hour... but recently they have been coming around at like 3-4AM!!! and these trucks and people aren't the quietest either... this past sunday it was 3:53AM and the f'n truck wouldn't start... never mind the flashing lights, the garbage cans being dragged on the floor, the garbage men grunting and cursing, and garbage being crushed together... now i have a truck that wont start and the key being turned giving it that loud revving (didn't spell check) noise... it was ridiculous...

Let your tennants know they MUST recycle & its the LAW. If you catch them that you will raise the rent or something. Charge them a "recycling fee".

If anyone can help clear something for me......
I believe it is the law to recycle...meaning if you don't you can get a fine...is this correct..I went on JCIA website and it doesn't say anything. Also when you have tenants and its just a 2 family is everyone obligated to recycle. I am at my wit's end with my tenants mixing garbage. I am trying to enforce this but it's very hard.....also am I the landlord responsible for taking out their trash even though its a 2 family....just want to hear thoughts....
I personally hate when people don't recycle.....

thanks

they basically always take our plastic, glass, tin, etc including detergent containers, in clear plastic recycling bags, and the take our recycled paper which we put in a cardboard box. If they leave something,
regular garbage OR recycling,
we call incinerator authority the same morning, and they come back and get it the same day.

Never had a problem if we call.
We're in Hamilton Park, maybe it's different neighborhood by neighborhood,
depending on who's doing the picking up...
