If I follow your historical analogy, you seem to be suggesting Hoboken would use Newport to annex JC. Doesn't seem very likely, dude Most of the people I have met from Hoboken dont even know where Jersey City is.

The WATERFRONT WALKWAY, IMHO, is the single best amenity in Hudson COunty.
Thus the proper measurement of distance is from Walkway (or bikeway) to Walkway and then you must compare going from Newport to the Southern part of the Walkway in Hoboken...just feet from the station. Comparing the distance accross that canal overpass with the 1/2 mile distance to Henderson Street, under the railroad tressles and then back another 1/2 mile from Henderson to the River is no comparison at all. If you've ever biked the Henderson route you know what I mean and walking is far worse...the ugliest part of the entire area. One choice is a short pleasant walk, the other is a long tedious chore. Of course, if one is going from the A&P to 5th and Willow the Walkway extension has no point. I for one will walk or bike almost daily to Hoboken when the bridgette is completed. It's only a couple blocks from Morton Williams. A wonderful amenity will be Springtime in Sinatra Park...Jersey City has nothing comparable. (Yes, I live in Newport.)

I used GMap-Pedometer to calculate a distance. From Marin and Columbus to the terminal via Marin Blvd, its approximately 1.8 miles. From the same point, via Second Street and through Newport, its Approximately 1.6 miles to the station. I believe what happens is Marin Blvd meets Observer highway a bit further north of the station, and Observer Highway slants southeast.
That said, getting to Washington Blvd gives a slight advantage to Marin blvd. However, you end up crossing the Holland Tunnel, walking past the mall and the empty lots on 16th and 18th Street and walking to Observer highway. On the other hand, walking down Marin you get to avoid going through Newport, so I guess it really is a toss up.

Is this walkway any more convenient than Marin Blvd to go to Washington Street in Hoboken? Maybe for people living in Newport. It seems that this walkway is only convenient for most people to go to the Lackawanna Terminal.

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009 ... ain_service_from_new.html Casinos place bet on train service from New York to Atlantic City by The Associated Press January 31, 2009 09:20AM NEW YORK (AP) -- The first clues that this could be a different kind of railroad experience are in a passenger guide that includes drawings depicting the proper way to display a poker face and admonishes, "Trafficking bad vibes into AC is strictly prohibited." Welcome to the Atlantic City Express Service, dubbed "ACES," the first direct train service between New York and New Jersey's gambling mecca. The multimillion-dollar project will carry its first passengers Feb. 6 and will operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Conceived in 2005 when Atlantic City's casinos could still count on steadily increasing revenues, ACES enters a landscape in which increasing competition from neighboring states and the overall economic downturn has sent casino revenues plummeting. Atlantic City's casinos won $4.55 billion from gamblers last year, down 7.6 percent from 2007. Gambling revenue for casinos nationwide dropped 3.6 percent in the first 11 months of 2008, compared with the same period in 2007, according to the American Gaming Association. Casino executives say the gloomy numbers make it even more important to invest now. "By the nature of our business, we've got to continuously reinvent ourselves, whether it's a good economy or a bad economy," Joe Domenico, senior vice president and general manager for Caesars Atlantic City, said Friday at the train's first public preview. "You have to think about where the revenues of tomorrow are coming from." The new train service is targeting young New Yorkers with disposable income who haven't chosen to spend it in Atlantic City, either because they don't own cars, consider the trip too long for public transit or aren't interested in the many bus trips that run from New York. Previously, a train trip from New York to Atlantic City required changing trains at least once. Each train features four double-decker cars like those used on some commuter lines, but with a twist (or a splash, depending on your taste): A bar at one end of each car that serves beer, wine and liquor, in addition to sandwiches and snacks. The upper levels of the cars, for first-class customers, feature waitress service. Both levels boast leather seats that are wider and have more leg room than conventional train cars, plus additional space for luggage. From New York, the ACES trains will stop once, in Newark, and proceed to just north of Philadelphia, then head east and continue nonstop to Atlantic City. The trip is expected to take about 2 1/2 hours. Introductory fares are $50 one-way for regular seats and $75 for first-class. Casino officials said that they expect as many as two-thirds of the tickets to be sold or comped as part of packages, but that seats will be available for customers making spur-of-the-moment travel plans. Each train contains 300 seats; casino executives said they were hoping for 65 percent occupancy once the service is up and running. "We're not looking so much for a return on the train itself, we're looking for the total return," said Auggie Cipollini, senior vice president and chief administrative officer of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. "It's about getting new customers in; if they're going to stay for the day they're going to eat, and if they're going to stay overnight you have the room revenue. When you look at the total picture, that's where we think this is a good investment for us." ACES is a joint venture involving the Borgata, Caesars Atlantic City and Harrah's Atlantic City. The casinos purchased eight train cars for about $15 million, and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority is paying $4.5 million over three years to lease four locomotives. Consulting and marketing costs push the total to about $25 million. The expenditure recognizes that the time is long past when Atlantic City's casinos could stand pat and wait for customers to flock to them. "Twenty years ago we didn't need to do anything to attract customers," said Michael J. Walsh, vice president of development for Caesars Atlantic City. "We'd just open the doors and they'd come. Now, with the competition, we have to protect the franchise."

I doubt all the drunks in Hoboken can stagger far enough to puke over here. Hoboken being bar, after bar, why should they leave? Also, many of them are part of the massive layoffs from Wall Street, banking, insurance, media and advertising, so what "hoboken crowd" has money to come here versus staying in Hoboken? Looks like you'll still have to be kickin' drums in broke down boken for a long time, CANKICKER.

My thoughts exactly too. Seems like Hoboken should kick in the majority of the costs for this. But of course, given our incompetent public officials who spend much of their time in bar-related fights with the police in Bradley Beach or urinating in public, that's probably not the case.

Under construction. Last time I took the light rail to the Hoboken Terminal, last week, it seemed as though they were readying to pour concrete all the way south from the canal to the developed portion of Newport. There is nothing actually crossing the canal yet, but they keep pounding more pilings into the ground.

Let's see if Gov. "Tax-A-Lot" Corzine can find a way to install a $2.00 toll on the new foot bridge as well.

Its unlikely to have such an effect. Most of the downtown businesses that you are talking about that would benefit are in the Grove Street area or out in Paulus Hook, too far to attract people taking a casual stroll. Maybe they would wander in toward Newport, but Newport lacks a certain... charm shall we say?
