Never, NEVER live in a garden level apartment anywhere in Jersey City. If you live in the heights and have a garden level apartment, you will be broken into. If you live downtown and have a garden level apartment, you will be flooded. It's just not worth it.

You can get a garden-level studio in Journal Square for $1,000/month, all utilities included, on-site laundry, no broker fee . No off-street parking, but a quiet residential street comprised of detached homes should allow for fairly easy parallel parking.

that's going to be difficult if you want the parking to be included in the price. Maybe try the heights area around doric (100 manhattan ave), there is a lightrail station right by there.

Why? hoboken is a full blown residential area with many shops and restaurants. Newport is a limited bubble development with just the small area around the mall and target.

i live on the western slope area of the heights (near manhattan ave and kennedy). it's relatively quiet, and no real crime issues i've experienced. rents arent too bad either, and if you find a place near kennedy blvd, there's buses into nyc pretty regularly.

i would say hoboken if you're single or in your early 20's.
grove if you want to be close to d/t jc's action. newport if you like high rises. paulus hook if you're a couple willing to spend a little. hp if not so rich.

Assume gas and electric are separate You shouldn't have a hard time getting a 1bdr or studio for $1100 and less in the Heights. I would check the Jersey Journal before craigeslist since I notice a markup on rentals on craigeslist, even better ride around and look for 'for rent' signs. If you have a great credit report, earn a decent salary and have a reference from a previous landlord you can negotiate the rent down between 50-150 a month.

Oky keeping Downtown Jersey City, Newport, Journal Square, Odgen Ave, Hamilton Park, Lincoln Park, Heights...in mind (which I see from the replies are good areas), can I get a 1BR/Studio with parking and onsite laundary for around $1000 - $1200?
I excluded Hoboken seeing its terribly expensive. I am a 28 yr old single male, no pets with a 9 to 6 job in NYC.

I was born in this city and I have lived in a few different areas. I think it's important to report only on the neigborhood YOU live in when giving people advice on what's a good area...then tell them why. Otherwise, with the way this city is changing, the information tends to be less than accurate.
I live very close to the Congress St. Light Rail Elevator. Living here you can enjoy the close proximity to Hoboken for shopping/dining, several quick commuting options to NYC, nice houses and apartments (some with views of NYC). I'm responding because my neighborhood was "bundled" into a neighborhood that you were told to "stay away from." Ogden Avenue is FAR EAST of Central, and while that was recommended, it implies that the other streets East of Central aren't good. That's so untrue. I know that because I LIVE HERE. There are brand new lofts, converted condos, nice neighbors and proximity to Manhattan. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thanks everyone. I actually have no idea about the area. I will search through the forum for further insights.
Thanks again.

I have to agree w/ ianmac47 & GrovePath, but I will try to narrow down a few sections (all around the Hudson-Bergen lightrail stops.
Lightrail ? West Side ? Sometimes referred to as the ?suburbs of Jersey City.? Rent in this area can range from $600 - $1200+ for a 1 bedroom (2 family-house to West Side station community respectively). Generally this area is quiet and parking for residents is zoned. ? MLK Drive ? Probably not an area you would want to consider ? Garfield ? This area is primarily multi-family houses where rent will be similar to West Side. It?s on the cusp of ?frontier land? but again, it?s pretty quiet and relatively safe. ? Liberty State Park ? There aren?t too many places to find housing in this area. ? Jersey Ave ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Marin Blvd ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Essex St ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Exchange Place ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Harborside ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Harsimus Cove - Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments ? Newport ? Summed up nicely by GrovePath?s comments

In the Heights the further north you go and further west the better it gets. The Western Slope is a good section. Stay away from Summit between Hague & Sherman Place. And Kennedy between Hutton & Congress. Also West of Central Ave. is good. Ogden Ave has Hoboken potential.

Hey, we have 3 or 4 Starbucks -- the newest one right on Newark Avenue by the Grove PATH station.
However, I am more of a Mom & Pop coffee shop person. Quote:

Have to agree. Narrow it down to at least a neighborhood and an old timer or two will reply with a fairly accurate assessment. Otherwise you'll walk away with the impression that all of JC is lawless, knee deep in dog poop, and is forever lacking the "essentials" (FIOS, Starbucks, Whole Foods...).

Safe Parking Space: Downtown: You will have to pay for really "safe parking" -- maybe $150-$250 per month -- street parking however is pretty safe and it's free. Decent Rents: Downtown: $1400 and it can go way, WAY up -- depending on the size and what area Safe Neighborhood: Well, Downtown is pretty safe ( about the same as Hoboken ) but in my opinion it is nicer and a little cheaper. If that is too expensive then you might look to Journal Square -- it still has the PATH subway to NYC or maybe look in the Heights if you want more space for less money. Others on here also like the Lincoln Park area on the west side of Jersey City -- there you get even more space and/or cheaper rent. There are countless threads on here about renting here -- if you bother to look -- use the search feature.

This is a tiresome and subjective question. Please ask a more specific question otherwise this entire thread is going to be about how people on one block hate every other block.

Hi,
I am moving to Jersey City around March end. Wanted to know what are the good areas to live in Jersey City. The things I expect are safe parking space and decent rents in a safe neighbourhood. Any pointers welcome? Thanks.
