Hey Steve, how about u send out some of the heavy equip & clean the major roads then have some smaller trucks clear the corners & some of the sidestreets where there are no cars during the day.
Too much damn snow & ice!!! Lots of icy corners still that haven't been shoveled or salted.

It feels like they are preaching to the choir. How about the people who don't speak English or who don't have a smartphone or who are not on Facebook or Twitter? How do you get the message to them?
Twitter: City of Jersey City ?@JC_Gov 1/2 Mayor Fulop, in conjunction with OEM, has declared a State of Emergency for #jerseycity as a result of the severe winter storm.

Mayor Steven M. Fulop, in conjunction with the Office of Emergency Management, has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Jersey City as a result of the severe winter storm impacting our municipality. Snow is expected to continue through the rest of the day and overnight. The State of Emergency dictates that only essential vehicles such as public safety vehicles and ambulances should be driven on city roads. Abandoned vehicles will be removed.

That's what she said.
It can be 4 inches or 14, all depends on the temperature change as we approach noon.

Deadly winter storm kills at least 13 in the South, will dump up to 14 inches of snow on New York City
As much as 14 inches of snow could hit New York City and the surrounding area tonight, as the storm that has gridlocked the Southeast comes north. AccuWeather Meteorologist Tom Kines says the snow will begin to fall around midnight and last through most of Thursday. The latest National Weather Service forecast map shows that the city will likely get between 10 and 14 inches, depending on whether precipitation changes over to rain during the day. Animals eating the stuff has been an issue with sugar based alternatives, which has included deer + car collisions as the deer go out in the road to lick the pavement.

Did I say you were advocating it, Pebble? Perhaps you need to follow your own advice. Also, you seem to have difficulty with ordinances. Have someone who can read, explain the bit in bold. 296-5. Deposit of harmful substances prohibited; rock salt. A. No person shall sprinkle, spread or scatter any substance harmful to the health of the inhabitants or injurious to animals upon any sidewalk covered with snow or ice. B. It shall be lawful to use rock salt for the melting of snow upon streets and sidewalks.

The city clearly has a law on the books stating that it shouldn?t be using rock salt. I don?t see them stopping, but it would be nice.

In Toronto?s deep freeze, beet juice beats salt for melting ice
Molasses from sugar beets, refined and sprayed on roads, can help melt ice at temperatures as low as -32 C ? with less environmental damage. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/ ... salt_for_melting_ice.html

Last week, I had a JC plow overtake my car with the salt going, and while it sounded bad, there were no dents. Think the bigger problem is with snow plows side-swiping cars and hitting wing mirrors. And not stopping. Anyway, every responsible parent makes sure their kids cover their faces when out in this weather. If flying salt was a real problem, I'm sure we'd have heard more complaints. And lawsuits.

I never heard anyone complain about a shooting salt rock before. It's par for the course of action. So if you feel that strongly about the situation file a grievence with the risk management division with the City of Jersey City. Maybe if you end up getting a payout it will open some eyes and find a more soothing way to dispense the rock slat.

BTW, if anyone needs to get rock salt, CH Martin has a good supply left. It's across the street from the hardware store on Newark.

I was standing on the sidewalk yesterday when one of the rock salt trucks came by. I was BLASTED in the back of my knee with a projectile rock of salt traveling very fast. It surprised the heck out of me. I was wearing jeans and it hurt for a good minute or two.
I wouldn't want to have a car parked on the street, I imagine a big chunk of rock salt traveling at 35 mph at close range can do some damage to a car's paint finish. Furthermore, my knee is about as high as a baby's head would be in a stroller. Can you imagine if a projectile hit an infant in the face/eye? There should be a gentler way to salt the roads.

I'm driving a friend tomorrow to get a new motorized wheelchair-from Sea Girt to Kessler in West Orange and back. I figure I'll be looking for alternate routes than the GSP to Route 280, because going up and down that hill would be a mite slippery in a wheelchair van.

Does anyone know where I can get rock salt in downtown? The Hardware store on Newark is out until Thurs, and I don't have a car. So I'd prefer a local source before trekking over to Home Depot for a bag (my absolute last choice!!!).
TIA.
