Didn't get "shut down" so much as they closed. There's a thread here about it.

until someone gets rid of the kitchen in the middle of the room, this is going to keep happening to this location. bars need to be home-y and that big block in the middle makes it awk. don't get me wrong, i liked this bar, but the kitchen should be moved to the back in order to make it more open. just my opinion...rip and good luck to the staff, always nice.

I'm a long time patron Barrow Bar since they opened. Though in the last few years I cut way back on how much I went there, for a few reasons. Pricing and the format change int he trivia night.
The lack of beer specials, especially on trivia night (when I usually went) really bugged me. It got to be a bit cost prohibitive (IMHO) for me to go there on a weekly basis as I, like many have been laid off. And the change in the trivia game format when he switched from Jeff to the really loud, shrieking, flip-flopping gal went way down in quality. Several of my friends were also really disappointed in this change. But - this said - the vibe was usually friendly and comfortable. The food was good bar food, and the staff made an effort to remember your name. I hope someone takes it over and continues the friendly vibe, and puts a good neighborhood place in there with decent pricing incentives for customers.

It's sad to have one less bar in the neighborhood, but Barrow Street always felt like the bar for downtown JC people who would feel more at home in Hoboken. Just sayin...

Confirmed again. Barrow St bar is "CLOSED" :( Chris is such a great guy as well as the many of people who go here. Great spot to watch the games, listen to music off the box or live. Sorry to all the Bartenders that have to deal with this, Joe, Rob, Chris, Twins, "The COOK". Hope things get situated.
To all the complainers about turning this place into a coffee shop, walk up to Jersey Ave, Starbucks, or Dunkin Donuts the last thing we need is another Coffee Shop. I live feet from the bar and the noise was never unbearable, update your windows or move. Chris we will miss the wings, sliders, irish nachos, video games and the GOOD TIMES. Hope all goes well for you in the future and pray someone continues what you built.

The mail that was in their door handles yesterday morning is still there today. Closed on a Saturday night? They really must be gone.

Barrow isn't exactly the rowdiest bar in the city, so I don't know why people are hating on it. But it was indeed closed again this weekend. I wonder if it really is shut down?

They were literally dealing Heroin out of JC Winstons...no different? Check the Police and newspaper reports.
There are thousands's of towns where you can live and not have bars. Jersey City is not one of them and thankfully never will be. And I did live on Mercer for almost a decade and neaby for almost 20. Have you ever even been to Hoboken? They have as many, if not more, residential neighborhood bars. When you state that "I was here paying hefty taxes long before most of you realized than Jersey City is hotter than your quiet little towns," I feel like perhaps you would enjoy their "quiet little towns"...no? um to those complaining -- if you don't like a bar in your neighborhood, don't live in an urban area. you live next to one of the most amazing cities in the world and all you find to complain about is having a (noisy) bar turn into a coffee shop because it doesn't suit your idea of how a residential neighborhood should be? give me a break... all of downtown is residential... but its also an incredibly urban area; one that you need to share with things and people you wouldn't necessarily interact with otherwise.
My advice to you -- newport. you can live in a residential gated community and never have to interact with the apparent low life who frequent such establishments.

And I hope it stays closed. I was walking there around 8 pm; it was so beautiful and quiet. I?ve never liked any bar on this street and I don?t think that Winston was any worse than Barrow Bar. No difference to me whatsoever, same reddish faces, football shirts and low pitch noises, and yes, I was here paying hefty taxes long before most of you realized than Jersey City is hotter than your quiet little towns. There is no place for a rowdy bar in the middle of a residential neighborhood period. You can try to keep doors tightly shut during ball games and drunken crowd under control, but there will be always a drunken moron outside screaming and yelling when his team scores. We are talking about noise, offensive behavior and profanities, loud patrons smoking-yelling and pissing all over the streets. Most of you don?t care, because you just come here for a few hours a week. It?s long enough to make our lives miserable. Maybe it?s time for home owners and property tax payers to introduce a new law: All bars in residential areas should be closed after midnight on weekends and 10 pm on weekdays, or converted to something else, perhaps coffee shops? It would work for hard working families and kids. Rest of you can take the Light Rail to Hoboken.

this is enough to keep me from going there. I hate it when businesses can't bother to be good neighbors, and leaving your sidewalk snow-packed and icy is the mark of a lousy neighbor.

They've got a bunch of TVs it's a good place to watch games, there's always a crowd during football and baseball games.
Nice little outdoor patio too, and a pool table. I like Barrow and they often have great drink deals, but at times I think they're inconsistent with pricing. I was once charged $20 for a pitcher, when I'm pretty sure it would have been cheaper to just buy a few pints instead.

Is this a good bar to watch a game in? I've walked by a few times but never noticed if they have tv's or not.
If they do, does anyone know if they have any specials during games?

Barrow Street that bad for Mercer....?
Anyone remember JC Winstons which occupied that spot prior to Barrow Street? I remember a cook was moving quite a bit of heroin out of there...

Well, that space was always a bar, so I'm not sure that Barrow Street Bar specifically ruined Mercer Street. It's the same old, same old. You know, cities have BARS, some of them which are intertwined into neighborhoods. In Jersey City, more so than in other cities like NYC and Hoboken, it's much EASIER to avoid living near a bar, since there are so few, LOL. Just find another quiet street to live on, without a bar. There are tons in Jersey City.

I hope they are closing. Barrow Street Bar is the worst thing that ever happened to beautiful Mercer Street. It?s even worse than the Bubonic Plague and infamous NY yuppie invasion.

Rock Band is a video game, and yes they play all types of interactive video games at the bar. Rock Band, guitar hero, wii bowling etc....
Barrow Street Bar is a great place to just hang out and have a beer, play pool, darts, etc... I moved to the neighborhood a couple months back and everyone there has been really nice and outgoing. They really welcomed me to the neighborhood. Lot's of regulars and Steve (Chris's brother) is a great guy to bullshit with about movies and music. Probably my favorite place to hang in downtown JC.
