N obel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel once said "The opposite of life is not death, it's indifference." For the man who swore he would never be silent when human beings suffer, indifference is "the epitome of evil."

There can be no indifference in Jersey City. Its citizens are reeling from days of violence and has led to the Tuesday shooting death of 17-year-old Lincoln High school student Pedro Roman Jr. on Cator Avenue near Triangle Park. Yesterday, an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with the fatal shooting.

City residents do not care about statistics. They know there are too many criminal and violent activities on their streets.

Ask yourself whether the timing of Friday's 50 arrests by police, with federal and state help and chronicled by a well-produced video with a long cameo appearance by Mayor Jerramiah Healy, a mere coincidence? It was a very expensive tax-paid campaign ad and the closest thing to indifference.

Last week, shots rang out on Bright Street near Gateway Field, where about 25 Roberto Clemente Little Leaguers, ages 7 to 14, were terrified. Coaches and adults threw themselves over the children to protect them. No one was hurt.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy has offered to find the Little Leaguers a new place to play. Where? In the Pershing Field area, where last Friday there was a brutal stabbing?

At the end of last month, the Triangle Park area was first in the news when three teens were hit with gunshots. At the time of the crime, police said they didn't believe the shootings were random and that the victims were not cooperating with the investigation.

This newspaper would never believe that the city Police Department would be indifferent, far from it. They do their jobs and many of them do them well. City residents rely on their professionalism. What police need is better support and less public relations. They need people in the community to work with police and provide information or tips. There can be no indifference

You are right. That is the reason they never made public the amount of drugs, it probably wasn't much considering it was 50 arrest. I bet out of the 50 only a handful even have serious enough charges to see any real time. The majority probably had low bails and some probably didn't even have a high enough charge to see a county jail. It is just a show they put on, grab as many people as you can and let the prosecutor worry about the charges sticking later. These arrest have more to do with quantity then quality arrest. The arrest aren't even related to the gang war that has been in the paper the past month. That is where they should focus.

Hi, if these raids were conducted in Greenville and Lafayette....

Why was the helicopter on Sunday doing all sorts of looping downtown over Harsimus Cove and Hamilton Park?

Were they looking for something suspicious? Are they doing set up for a future crackdown downtown?

Seems odd that all the police activity and arrests took place in other areas of Jersey City, but that the noisy helicopter gets to disturb all of Jersey City residents?

Is this an intimidation thing? Like spend about two hours and do loops around the neighborhood and scare the dealers sort of thing (and annoy the taxpaying regular citizens) sort of thing?

Just curious as to the complaints about the helicopter this Sunday were downtown.

Nice Work...this is great stuff....this is how you attack crime...It would be great if this would be a regular occurrence that would help rid a lot of crime in Jersey City. I really hope it's not only about the election, but my gut tells me it is.

Freaking awesome!! That's what I'm talking about. If only it happened more often and not only before an election, although between this and the pet day Healy might be on to something with winning people over, we should have elections every year!

A New Jersey State Police helicopter roared over Jersey City this weekend where a crackdown on violence and drugs led to 50 arrests by city police working with a large task force of federal, state and county law enforcement.

"We knew the people we were after, we knew what we were looking for and we averaged four scoops a minute," Police Chief Tom Comey said today at a press conference on the investigation that led to Friday night's sweep, which was videotaped by the Jersey City Police Department.
Joint effort leads to 50 arrests in Jersey City

The arrests made in the city's Greenville and Lafayette sections including a range of charged from attempted murder, firearms offenses, leader of narcotics trafficking network and other drug offenses. About 75 percent of those arrested were specifically targeted, while the remainder were picked up in the course of the crackdown, Comey said.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said at the press conference that the action grew out of a drug probe centered on the A. Harry Moore Public Housing Complex on Duncan Avenue being conducted at the end of last year by his office, the JCPD and DEA.

The DEA implemented the Violent Enterprise Source Targeting program or (V.E.S.T.), which recruited a dozen more agencies. DeFazio noted the evolution of the investigation and pointed out that many criminals active in city housing complexes do not reside there.

On Friday evening six heavily armed squads of officers and investigators from 12 different agencies and led by the JCPD swarmed the target zones. Police seized a loaded .357 magnum, and caches of cocaine and heroin, official said.

In a video of the busts shown to the media yesterday numerous suspects could be seen with their hands up against buildings at various locations while the helicopter shown bright lights and rumbled overhead. The video also showed scenes in a command center where Comey and others watched on closed circuit television cameras as the arrests unfolded.

There were 26 arrests Friday night, 19 arrests made by DeFazio's office executing arrest warrants earlier last week and a handful of other arrests made during the planning stages of the probe, officials said.

V.E.S.T. is described as "an innovative, multi-agency collaborative effort to disrupt and dismantle violent criminal organizations in New Jersey" to "share intelligence, target the most violent offenders, conduct sustained enforcement operation and coordinate prosecutions."

"We can do wonders when we work together," said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Aaron T. Ford. "The bad guys have a network as well, but our network is tougher than theirs."

Those arrested in Phase One of the probe include Jersey City residents Tequan Ryals, 26, of Fulton Avenue; Chester Whitaker, 33, of Lexington Avenue; Ronald Gathers, 39, of Turgers Avenue: Jensen Purnell, 21, of Armstrong Avenue: David Wooten, 36, of Dales Avenue; Yasah Bey, 33, of Danforth Avenue; Lakief Grayson, 19, of Dales Avenue; Lamont Coffee, 30, of Warner Avenue; Malik Jackson, 22, of Duncan Avenue; Marcus Clark, 25, of Storms Avenue; Dade Dennis, 21, of Van Wagenen Avenue; Stephani Woodson, 29, of Storms Avenue; and Bergen Avenue residents Gregory Shannon, 26, Ebony Mitchell, 26, and Antoine Baxter, 32, officials said.

Also arrested in Phase One were Robert Shannon, 32, of Monmouth County: Troy Brown, 40, of Daytona; Erica Shannon, 35, of Eatontown, and Reynaldo Vasquez, 30, of Greeley Avenue, officials said.

Arrested this weekend in Phase Two were Jersey City residents Andre Bullock, 34, of Stegman Avenue; Spencer Hankerson, 22, of Madison Avenue; Florence Jones, 48, of Rutgers Avenue; Jacob Malloy, 28, Arlington Avenue; Jahmil Legrande, 24, of Myrtle Avenue; Robbie Cutler, 18, of Storms Avenue; Tyrell Frye, 19, of Forrester Avenue; Abigi Shabazz, 22, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, officials said.

Also arrested in Phase Two were Laini Gray, 29, of Gardener Street; Stanley Capers, 34, of Lexington Avenue; Wahdi Holmes, 26, of Pacific Avenue; Timothy Gable, 27, of Dwight Street; Corey Pridgen, 38, of Catherine Court; Christopher Stewart, 22, of Gautier Avenue; Keith Jones, 42, of Bidwell Avenue; Tony Alexander, 21, of Salem-Lafayette Court, William Smith, 21, of Myrtle Avenue; George Gethers, 19, of Woodward Street; Gregory Casanova, 19, of Bergen Avenue, and Justin Nesmith, 18, of New Heckman Drive, officials said.

Finally, Wegman Parkway residents Darnell Dantzler, 20, and Davon Alston, 20, were arrested in Phase Two, as were Freemont Street residents Patrick McDaniel, 36, and Tracy Oneal, 34, as well as a 16-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy, officials said. Out of towners arrested were Davone Jefferson, 22, of Rosselle and Mark Vice, 51, of Newark.
Kavon White, 21, of Fulton Avenue, faces the most serious charge, with attempted murder, officials said.

Police Director Sam Jefferson said the best part about the raids is that no one was injured and everyone went home at the end of the night. .
