You know what's useless, there's sometimes 2 crossing guards & even a jcpd officer outside on westside & union street.
Why not eliminate the2 crassing guards & leave the officer there. He can do the job all by hisself.

OK. Spoke to a guard this morning. Old timer in JC Heights.
They make 40-46 bucks A DAY depending on seniority.
Laughed when I said 48 bucks an hour.
Let's take an average 42*20=210 per week.

Yes folks, $210.00 a week.

Below is the data cut and pasted from the NYPD website:
GREAT PART TIME JOBS ARE AVAILABLE NOW!

GOOD PAY - $9.88/HOUR TO START, $12.90/HOUR AFTER 3 YEARS.

HEALTH BENEFITS-HEALTH INSURANCE WITH 20+ HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.

Do you really think that Jersey City would pay 48 bucks an hour when NYC pays 9.88-12.90?

As far as "scaremongering" I was simply speaking to the fact that dismissals, en masse, at the local high schools are
troublesome traffic wise. You know we all avoid 3PM traffic on Montgomery, Palisade, Bergen and Commuinpaw. I was not implying anything about the students demeanor.

I have discussed this issue ad nauseum. I'm done.

Power to the little guy.

okayyy well even if they do work 20 hours a week, then $20,000 per year, working 20 hours a week, for 36 school weeks, is still $28 per hour. Which is quit a bit as well.

Of course, it's kind of stupid that we can't all agree on a number. Can't we just ask the Jersey Journal people how they got their numbers? Ask them if they meant $48 per day?

I have not seen any site that supports your assertion that JC school crossing guard make only about $10/hour. Other sites show annual JC school crossing guard salaries in the range of about $20-25k/year. 3 hrs/day (morning, lunch and afternoon) on say 180 school days/year would work out at $46*3*180 = $24,840.

The JJ numbers look credible. Post some real evidence to support your numbers if you disagree with them.

http://www.salaryexpert.com/index.cfm ... sitionId=76910&CityId=369

I think the crossing guards do an excellent job, and I know it's not without it's risks. And I also agree there are probably better targets for City cuts. (For example JC pays over 15k/student/year - three times the national average per student, for a broken system.) However, $46/hour if true, is wasteful City spending. Across the nation services like this are being cut as local governments have to make tough choices. I also wouldn't underestimate local parents capability to self-organize if these services were reduced or cut.

Oh - and drop the scaremongering. Most Lincoln and Ferris kids are more frightened of their crossing guards and parents than the other way around. I drive past Ferris most days. They are extremely well behaved compared to a lot of schools.

I think the Dept of Labor have just taken the tax filings - the $20,210 number and divided by 52*40 to get the $9.72 number. Crossing guards most likely work around 10 hours/week and not every week, which make the JJ numbers more credible.

I would think for the students mostly but the guards do dircect the flow of vehicular traffic as well.

Hey Irish - I read an article in the NY Times about 3 months ago about crossing guards in Montclair, NJ. They make $80,000 a year working full time. I know they make good money and doubtful it is $10 an hour. So why don't you check your "facts" first before you are so quick to criticize what you read on JCLIST....if what we post is so absurd and effin retarded then go post on another site.

Again, this is mis-information. Only in the Jersey Journal, the PREMIER NJ newspaper. INCORRECT DATA!!!!!!!!
If you don't believe me call the JCPD and ask for the Crossing Guard Dept.
It seems they are factoring-in health benefits. EVEN SO THOSE FIGURES ARE UNTRUE.

Not fair folks. Do they do that at your job?

Now thanks to Gov. Christie the health benefits are abolished. Let's see who will take this job now........
10 BUCKS AN HOUR. MAKE THE PHONE CALL!!!!

Read between the lines folks. By your calculations they would make abt. 192 bucks a day, 960 a week. 3840 a month, 46K a year. THAT'S WHAT A ROOKIE COP AND NEW TEACHER MAKE.
Are you that naive?
Propaganda and media. You fell for it.

If they were paid $10/hour I don't think anyone would have an issue. And as far as volunteer crossing guards go, a lot of communities in the US and countries like Greece and NZ manage very successful volunteer crossing guard programs. Perhaps try googling and following the links a little more deeply :)

Start with this one:

For those of you who didn't click on the link in the original post, here is the source of the $48/hr number. For anyone interested in posting their opinion without informing themselves, go right ahead. I'm sure you won't be deterred.

From the Jersey Journal

Jersey City is giving crossing guards small raises but won't provide new hires with health benefits
Friday, November 26, 2010
Jersey City's crossing guards will get a slight raise, but new hires won't get health benefits under a contract approved by the City Council this week.

The contract passed 5-to-2 at Tuesday's meeting. Councilwoman Willie Flood was absent and Councilman Steven Fulop left prior to the vote.

Councilwomen Nidia Lopez and Viola Richardson both voted against the contract, saying they didn't feel the benefits should be eliminated.

The crossing guards have been without a contract since Aug. 31, 2008.

Members of the Jersey City School Traffic Guards Association hired before June 30, 1991 will be paid $47.84 an hour retroactively for Sept. 1, 2008 to Aug. 31, 2009; $48.80 effective Sept. 1, 2009; and $48.80 effective Sept. 1 this year.

Crossing guards hired since July 1, 2009 will be paid $45.57 an hour effective Sept. 1, 2008; $46.48 effective Sept. 1, 2009; and $46.48 effective Sept. 1 this year.

Anyone hired after May 21 would not be eligible for benefits and all members with benefits would leave the traditional plan and transfer to Direct Access Blue Cross/Blue Shield or an HMO by Jan. 1.

The members with benefits will also pay a co-pay for mail order prescriptions and contribute 1.5 percent of their salaries toward the cost of their health care, as required by a new state law signed earlier this year.

The members will also be paid $500 each by Jan. 15 "in consideration for all employees in the unit leaving traditional coverage by Jan. 1, 2011," according to the memorandum of agreement.

Yeah they're really draining the city coffers.
Now let's pick on the meter maids they really make the big bucks.

BS. Hard to argue the facts. They may only work 10-15 hours per week. $48/h is obscene for basic traffic duty. People volunteer for this duty for free. Schools have regular collections to give gifts to these traffic helpers. You'll get free volunteers for this kind of work. Why pay? You are out of your tiny minds.
