There are two different groups of kids. There are kids at PATH stations and such selling candy, and there are kids that this thread was originally about-- the ones at the intersection of Erie and the Holland Tunnel approach, collecting money "for cheerleading." Some of those kids look as young as 8 years old. Whether or not the cheerleading thing is legit, it's irresponsible and scary to have kids that young walking into traffic. The cars are stopped at a red light, but you never know with JC drivers what's going to happen.

They get all their candy for sale from BJ's.
From listening to their minders (possibly parents) who are their with them, its all for their own profit, which isn't all that bad except that location I would consider as child neglect or child endangerment.

Furthermore, thank god it's not crummy girl scout cookies sold by spoiled daughters of cheating adulterer CEO's. Long live street chocolate, and the working class! Now excuse me while I go eat a peanut butter cup. Enjoy the weather kids!

Excellent job of making an ass of yourself on your first post.

When someone ask you for money or anything you have a choice to give or not. Then you go on with your day. Those who think and worry because they have said no have different issues. Seek help. People who suddenly care about the welfare of people and children who they would not piss on if they were on fire have even a bigger issue. I give and what they do with it is their issue (even church). Most pay taxes (Local, State and Federal) and only God knows what happens to that. Please don't selectively hate!

Wow Terri, I have news for you...I was a girl scout and my parents were neither cheating adulterers or CEO's...why so angry...these future panhandlers (oh, I mean children) should be lucky to be girl scouts schlepping door to door like I did when I was a kid. And p.s... they aint selling anything, but themselves on the corner of the boyle plaza...shame, shame on you and them and their parents.

See this thread

Someone was hurt not killed. A poor driver was shaken.

But, it is just a matter of time. The children on Erie today, were shockingly young, very scary. Two older women were sitting in lawn chairs on opposite sides of the street "monitoring" them.

I hate this scam

That didn't seem to be the implication. If they are just asking for money .....well then that's different. However, unfortunately it is the sign of the times, and I'm afraid it's most likely just the beginning.......once again though, seems like a pointless concern and complaint with everything else going on -that's all.

"Endless cheerleading collecting" was exactly what the "implication" was.

Really Terry, "pointless concern"? Children who appear under the age of 10 years old standing in the middle of busy intersection begging for money is a "pointless concern"? These kids could be injured/killed by cars of even abducted by some crazy driving by...

I don't recall saying I was concerned about it. I was responding to the OP, and was sharing something I learned while living in the city. Read my post again and see if the word, "disturbed," or "concerned," is there. Have a great weekend

It's sad for me to say (being a former girl scout :) that I do not trust the kids selling anything on the street or train. When I lived in the city I witnessed those kids selling candy on the train for their "basketball uniforms" meeting up with an older man and handing over some of their money. This was in Washington Heights and ever since then I am always skeptical. I am not sure if it is legal, but I just don't buy it.

Whats up with the endless cheerleading collecting going on the end of Erie Street, is this even legal?
