Whether it?s the number three special on your favorite fast food menu, the patty melt at your favorite greasy spoon or the organic, grass-fed piece of pure beef that your friend makes for every barbecue, everyone has a favorite burger.

For some, there are fewer things more comforting than a cheeseburger, and if made right, a burger can be a religious experience.

After some research on Yelp and a solid recommendation from a colleague, I sampled burgers from 9th and Coles Tavern, Park and Sixth Comfort Food and New Park Tavern, all of which are in Jersey City.

From 9th and Coles Tavern, located on 174 Coles St., I ordered the basic 8-ounce beef burger with cheddar and fries. The burger, served on a not-so-buttery-and-soft brioche roll, started to fall apart with the first bite, so much so that it was easier to eat the patty and cheese with my knife and fork.

The patty itself looked like it was made in-house and not straight from a freezer. My partner in crime ordered the ?9C Signature Burger,? which comes with saut?ed mushrooms, a slice of taylor ham, hot pepper mayo and a fried egg. He enjoyed the mess even though his burger it, like it?s smaller counterpart, started to fall apart as well.

Overall, the food was similar to going to a diner, which is by no means a problem since you can?t always go to your favorite diner and have a few beers with your burger and fries.

Also, you can?t go wrong with some Metallica and a few verses of ?Pour Some Sugar On Me? playing in the background.

I suggest the appetizer sampler with your beers or at the very least the bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers.

From Park and Sixth Comfort Food, located at 364 Grove St., I ordered the Powerhouse Prime Burger with gorgonzola and sweet potato fries. They use ground short rib for their burgers, which in my opinion made the flavor beefier and the burger juicier, but I could have just been cheese-drunk on the mac and cheese they serve. Either way, this burger was top notch.

I suggest pairing the burger with their homemade iced tea, which has its own unique flavor. To me, it tasted like peaches, honey and cinnamon ,and to my dining partner it tasted like an Arnold Palmer.

I suggest the powerhouse prime burger and the brussels sprouts hash, and if you?ve got the room, go halfsies on a macaroni and cheese ? you won?t regret it.

At New Park Tavern, on 575 West Side Ave., the menu, a chalkboard at the end of the bar, has about six items listed on it. We ordered a burger and a corned beef sandwich from this hole-in-the-wall bar. Both were deliciously simple and uncomplicated.

The burger, which was a bit bigger than a hockey puck, was perfectly browned on the inside and juicy in the middle and sandwiched in a poppy seed kaiser roll.

The American cheese was melted and covered the patty like a yellow comforter. They don?t crowd the bun with lettuce, onions and tomato either. It?s straight beef, cheese and bun and I?m OK with that.

A more basic burger would be impossible to find.

The only thing missing on the burger? Ketchup.

My biggest disappointment was that I hadn?t been there sooner.

Also, the prices are incredible. Two beers, two burgers and fries and a corned beef sandwich came out to about $30.

Where?s your favorite burger joint? Drop me a line at alovesfood@gmail.com.

Left Bank isn't the best burger in JC, let alone the state.

Half of the burgers on the list aren't burgers anyway.

I wasn't really impressed with Left Bank, but regarding their pick for best burger in New York, I'd have to say that Minetta Tavern's Black Label burger really is as sublime as the reviews suggest.

Seriously. Not to mention that the one time I've been to Left Bank, my burger was fantastic. Not the best in the city, but excellent.

This board is a perfect encapsulation of the worst stereotypes of people from Jersey City (e.g.- we're all complete assholes). Rather than think: "Hey, that's not my personal favorite burger in the state, but glad to see a local business get some ink," it's always preferable on JCList to spend 3-4 posts pissing on the local business for having the audacity of not appealing to ones completely subjective tastes.

I wasn't aware of the stereotype that we are all assholes. Everyone thinks that? This is the first I've heard. I thought that was people from NY and France.

Disagree with your post JC man.

I am happy that they picked a place in Jersey City, but if/when people show up to try it because they made this list, they will be completely disappointed and it will look bad on us in the end. It?s not a question that this place that markets themselves as a burger bar has subpar burgers. The fact that it was even considered one of the best in the state is appalling. Hopefully, they read their reviews so they turn things around and become better. The fact that they are getting these type of accolades means they may not change and continue to serve shitty food to you idiots who don?t have a good palate.

This forum is unapologetic truth. People can say what they want. If you really expect everyone to come out and say, Hey That?s great a local business is getting coverage, good for them! You?re kidding yourself. Best burger in NJ? This is laughable.

I totally agree, that burger was shameful, I could get a better burger next door for a fraction of the cost at the chicken shack next door.

It's a pretty good burger, but Left Bank isn't the best burger Downtown, let alone the city or the entire state. Still, as has been said, good to see JC get some press.

Thank you. I ultimately pity most of the regulars here who seem to require the instant gratification of complaining about something/someone, but I hate how even when I open a thread that I think will not have the usual negativity, it's full of these miserable people.

New Park Tavern makes a better burger by far. It's not even close. And it's cheaper as well.

I, unexpectedly, ended up at Left Bank and I was truly surprised. The best burger for me is definitely Newark's Hambergao. But I had a spicy burger special at Left Bank and I am still thinking about it. That was over a week ago!!!

Well put. For burger purists in the area, Krug's in Newark cannot be beat. A huge quality beef patty sourced from a local butcher, sesame seed bun from a nearby bakery, and good old fashioned American cheese. Heaven!

P.S. NPT is wildly overrated IMO. I gladly drive an extra 10 minutes for the superior Krug's experience.

Not sure why there's all the hate on Left Bank. I've been there twice and the burgers have been excellent both times. Best in the state, maybe not, but easily one of the best burger places I've ever been too.

I still prefer burgers using toasted bread then a bun of any sort.

Downtown:
White Star - Pat Lafrieda beef, damn good. have not tried the more expensive dry aged. excellent think cut bacon, good bun if you are OK with brioche. Extra points for excellent delivery.
Park & 6th - solid burger. no frills, just consistent quality (IMO).

Disqualified:
Park & 6th Gastropub - pretzel bun, yikes. They really need to let that go.
Skinners - Love this burger at the bar, but they are batting about .250 for hitting temp in the past year+... and not by small degrees, I'm talking well done on a rare order.

I love the burger at White Star. When the White Star first opened they're burgers were great. Then the burger quality trailed off. But now it's great again.

I used to like the burger at Marco Pepe, but the quality of their food deteriorated dramatically.

I have never been to Park Tavern, so I can't comment.

I haven't had the burger at Skinners in a long while. I don't remember my experience with it.

Burger at Park & Sixth is good, I just like that stupid pretzel bun idea. What's that all about.

Hamilton Inn should just stop selling food entirely as should the place on Coles & 9th.
