And the new building looks like s**t. Is that the best design they could have come up with?

So it looks as if the old Beauty Land location is going to become . . . . Beauty Land. So if you were a fan of this place, have no fear, it is going to return.

I was wondering what all the sirens were last night.

Here is the Jersey Journal Article:

Beauty products fuel fire in Downtown Jersey City
Jersey City fire officials are checking the remnants of a Downtown beauty supply shop destroyed by stubborn two-alarm blaze early this morning.

The fire started sometime late last night in a the three-story Newark Avenue store, JCFD spokesman Andrew Johnson said.

Many of the beauty products exploded and went flying during the fire, and the metal gate covering the storefront got so hot firefighters had to hose it down as they were trying to enter, Johnson said.

The shop's location -- a commercial area off Bay Street -- and the timing -- late at night -- proved to be both a blessing and a curse. Although no one was injured, there was also no one around to report the fire, allowing it to take hold before firefighters could respond, Johnson said.

"It was the classic kind of a major, devastating fire," Johnson said.

Firefighters arrived around at midnight and had the fire under control at 1:11 a.m., Johnson said.

Neither of the stores next to the building suffered major damage, Johnson said.

The building's owners were on the scene this morning but declined to speak with The Jersey Journal.

Sorry about the error. I guess the construction paper at 99 Cent Dream is safe.

Also: I've made a few purchases at Beauty Land, and it's always seemed pretty busy when I've been in there.

Anyhow, however much we complain about the police here, it seems to be a great tribute to the fire codes, the fire inspectors and the firefighters that it seems as if the buildings next to Beauty Land are still intact.

I had my scanner on last night and heard the fire dispatch go out right around midnight.

What time did the fire start? The original message was posted past midnight, but if I'm not mistaken, the freakish thunder/hailstorm happened at around 7:30 pm. I don't remember seeing any lightning or hearing thunder at midnight or so.

Anyway, I'm glad it happened late at night. Hopefully there were no workers there when it happened.

JC-I, I can confirm that there was lightning action at about midnight and the flashes looked like they were coming from the west. I was on my computer in the spare room at that time and that window faces west. There was thunder as well but I only remember seeing and hearing maybe 2 -3 flashes and crashes in all. Hopefully no one was hurt.

i hope they don't re open. i would rather someone bought the place and turn it into a store/restaurant that is useful.
who knows they could have burned the place down to collect the insurance, i never saw the place with many customers.

Interesting. The storm definitely centered over the area at one point. A lightening strike could have caused the fire. The strike area could have smoldered for hours before bursting into flame.

That was Beauty Land which was located between Jackie's Kids and 99 cent dream. A guy at My Way Deli was saying that lightning caused the fire, I am not sure if he knew what he was talking about or if it was a guess.

Flames were shooting out of the upper floor windows of the dollar store that's by the beauty supply store and Washington Mutual.
