The security guard at BJ's knows who this is? I don't have a clue. I am so out of the loop, it's depressing.

Broadway comes to Jersey City
Jersey City can boast about being home to at least two of this year's nominees for the Tony Awards, which honors Broadway's best performances.

John Lloyd Young, who portrays singer Frankie Valli in "Jersey Boys" and Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, who belts out showstoppers as Shug Avery in "The Color Purple," were nominated today for the coveted prizes.

When reached at home, both performers were thrilled.

"When I learned about it, I just wanted to scream," said Withers-Mendes, who lives in the Journal Square area. "Then, I wanted a huge breakfast."

Young learned the news this morning, at the same moment millions of other people did -- watching TV this morning. He said he watched the announcement on CBS's "The Early Show" with his girlfriend at their Newport-area residence.

"We were very excited as we watched it together," Young said. "Now, she has to think about a Tony dress. And I?ll buy it for her."

Young, an odds-on Tony favorite since reviewers showered glowing reviews on his "Jersey Boys" performance, said he became surprisingly apprehensive about his chances as the big announcement came in.

"I've watched the Tony Awards nominations show for years and there were always four names in a category," Young said. "So, when they got to the fourth name in my category I was thinking 'that was it.' I forgot that they've changed it to five names per category. That's when they announced my name last."

The awards show will air June 11 on CBS.

Read all about Hudson's Tony nominees in tomorrow's Jersey Journal.

While I was there, a young high school basketball player from Lincoln High in Brooklyn moved in during the NBA draft. Apparently they needed to get him away from B'lyn and all the attention. I cannot remember his name for the life of me but I do remember he was Stephan Marbury's cousin and he ended up being drafted by Portland. I also remember the doormen saying that tons of free stuff was sent to him all the time and a Maybach was at his disposal. Nice bling in front of the building!

You are thinking of Sebastian Telfair. They just wrote a book and made a documentary about his life as a high school basketball player. Does anyone know if Jersey City is mentioned in the film or book?

I saw the 2 hour documentary on espn a few weeks ago and There was a portion in the documentary that said telfair was moved to an undisclosed location in the weeks leading up to the draft to get his away from all the attention. And on draft day they did show him getting into a maybach. So I guess the doorman wasnt lying. I had no clue it could have been jersey city or the liberty towers, wasnt looking for it. Maybe if i watched again looking for it I could tell.

Michelle Rodriguez won't be back visiting family in Jersey City anytime soon.

http://www.perezhilton.com/index.php?page=3

Michelle lived in Texas until the age of 8 when her family moved to the Dominican Republic where she lived for two years before moving to Puerto Rico. At 11, Michelle's family relocated for the last time to Jersey City, New Jersey. Although she has been working since 1999 as an extra in such films as Summer of Sam (1999) and Cradle Will Rock (1999), it only took a magazine ad announcing an open casting call in New York for Michelle to decide to finally step into the spotlight. The role was the female lead, the movie was Girlfight (2000). Despite the lack of experience in film and boxing, Michelle auditioned, along with another 350 girls. After various trials inside an actual boxing ring and five arduous months of training in Brooklyn's Gleason's Gym, she was finally chosen to portray the role of Diana Guzman. As soon as the independent film began making the rounds at various film festivals, Michelle began gaining critical acclaim for her performance earning her awards like the Deaxville Festival of American Cinema award for Best Actress and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society for Female Breakthrough Performance. As Girlfight (2000) continued to gain notoriety with its September 2000 release, Michelle was already hard at work with films like 3 A.M. (2001), the blockbuster hit The Fast and the Furious (2001), and Resident Evil (2002). With Hollywood calling her name, the future for this feisty Jersey girl is as strong as the punches she throws.

Trivia:
Was raised in Texas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and in Jersey City.

Is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent.

She beat out 350 other girls for the role of Diana Guzman in Girlfight (2000).

Girlfight (2000) was her first acting audition, and she got the role. The Fast and the Furious (2001) was her second audition, and she also got that role.

Didn't have a driver's license before filming The Fast and the Furious (2001) and had to obtain one during her training for the car chase sequences.

Has two half-sisters on her father's side.
Has two older twin brothers named Raul and Omar

Dropped out of high school at 17, but she went back and graduated via an equivalency diploma.

Ranked #77 in Stuff magazine's "102 Sexiest Women"
Ranked #34 in Maxim's "100 Sexiest Women"

It was announced in 2005 that she would be joining the second season cast of the hit ABC drama "Lost" (2004).

She was the original choice for the title role in ?on Flux (2005)

Keeps getting arrested for DUI's is now in jail.

i heard that 50cent lives in the sugar house/hill lofts (can't remember what it's called) and I spotted michael jackson's dad a couple of months ago eating pancakes at newport pancake house. I think he was attending a jehovah witness meeting, in any case. I played it safe and kept my kid at a good distance from him... oh and doesn't the Indian of The Village people live here as well?

i had heard that Malkmus lived over by journal square.

Also, a fitness guru called High Voltage lived there too and the NY Times did a story on her all-white apartment. It seemed crazy to me at the time because it was a ton of $$ to throw into a rental but what do I know. Here's a link.

Doesnt Queen Latifah have a place around here too? In the Heights? I also thought she opened that basketball court near the opening to Liberty State Park. This could just be rumors.

Beetle juice from the Howard Stern show lives in the Hieghts. Joe Budden lives by Bergen ave. Tommy from Martin used to live by Newport towers, I dont know if he still does. Michelle Rodriguez used to live in the Hieghts and own a store on Central Ave. Rappers Hitchcock and Ranson of A-Team are from Montgomery.
