When it comes to mass transit to EWR, the cheapest (and fastest) routing is to avoid the NJT AirTrain connection and instead go downstairs and catch the #62, which runs often and, if timed properly, the connection from PATH to bus can be minimal. #62 Schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0062.pdf If you are doing DTJC to NWK to EWR via PATH and NJT, you might as well do Uber for a few bucks more and go door-to-door in half the time.

Last Sunday (17th) I took the path to NWK and then NJ Transit to to the Airtrain. Uber pool said its $15 something to the airport.
I went with the trains thinking it will be cheaper. My one way ticket from NWK to the EWR Station was $8.50. I paid $11.25 to take the train, and Path took almost 30 mins to show up on Sunday. I wasn't catching a flight, so the time really isn't an issue. Pay 3 bucks more and you would be at the airport faster. At 1AM today I dropped the rental I picked up Sunday and took uber pool back. It was $23. Uber routes you to the the Turnpike only to come out on 1/9 Truck. It was a ridiculous waste of time. But I had no other option seeing it was past midnight.

Used Lyft, and have several times since. Very happy, except for the dude that showed up to pick up 4 with a trunk full of crap. The EWR run is like $18!! I tip generously, remembering it costing 35-60.

What did you end up doing?
We have an EWR international flight at noon on Wednesday, signifiant other demands an Uber, I would be fine taking public (from Grove)...Do have a couple of suitcases, but we're pretty organized. Supposed to be sunny and nice on Wednesday..

Agreed. Avoid 78, unless you know for a fact that it is completely traffic free. Any issue should on the 78 bridge and you could be in a world of hurt. The one and only time I have missed a flight was because I got stranded by a private taxi service that kept stringing me along tellin game a driver was on his way and when he finally showed up, he INSISTED on going via 78, despite my insistence it was a mistake to do so, and we got stuck in a massive jam. This is the reason I will never use USA TAXI anymore and completely switched to ride sharing services. In all these years (since 2013) it was been magnitudes better than local taxi companies. People love to hate Uber (and there might be some valid reasons) but they have truly exposed and shown the myriad issues with local taxi services.

Even in the rare occasion when the covered roadway area has been backed up, I have never taken more than 30 minutes to get to EWR. For a midweek departure, if you leave DTJC around 4 PM, or earlier, you will make it to EWR in 20 ,imites, or less. Also, at that time, you beat the rush for Uber/Lyft cars, so you will not get the surge pricing add on. Like I said, I do this trip almost every six weeks, and never had an issue.

I agree - but the ride sharing concept isn't going away. Prices will one day rise. Right now the drivers are being taken advantage of and don't even know it.

The wife and I have taken Uber for our last two trips to EWR (to and from). We even used Uber in Bangkok. The only issue is that you occasionally get a driver who is not familiar with our area and relies on Google maps. Last time we ended up going 78 all the way South through Bayonne, instead of taking 1&9 (no toll, less distance).
Enjoy Uber while it lasts. IMO, drivers don't make enough to cover the depreciation on their cars. I think many drivers will realize this once major wear-n-tear expenses start to pile up (new brakes, new rotors, engine mounts, oxygen sensors, clutch, tires, etc.).

Uber - I even have a special code for you so that you're first trip is free (up to $15 credit) lol.

I would agree, probably shouldn't take more than 30 mins from DTJC. Are you flying out of terminal C? Do you have PreCheck?
The reason I ask is late afternoon/early evening, the lines can be pretty bad. UA has a large bank of flights going to Europe at that time and lines can get long. If you don't have Pre, I would say get to the airport 90 mins ahead of time. And I wouldn't worry too much about first-time using Uber; although I personally have better experiences with Lyft. They treat the drivers better and as a result, the service level seems to be better.

Can anyone tell me if it's rash to make my 1st ever Uber ride an airport trip? Does the passenger rating system mean I might be less likely to get a timely ride with no record?

Thanks. Penumbra, you've got stones leaving the house with 90 min. We've nearly missed flights arriving at the terminal with 2 hrs and checking luggage.
Bohdipooh, isn't the section under the covered roadway still hell? I've been staying away from there like the plague for like 5 years.

Whole heartedly second what penumbra said: I fly out of EWR very often (usually Thursdays, at about the same time) and I usually leave my place in DTJC (1st St, east of Marin) about 90 minutes before my flight's scheduled departure, and that gives me plenty of time to enjoy a drink or two at the United Club.
Someone mentioned the turnpike, but I would advise against that. Request an Uber at 4 PM, and have them go over the Pulaski to the 1/9. If they stay on the express lanes side, you will be at the airport in no time. It normally takes an Uber/Lyft driver about 15 minutes to get me to the airport. With traffic, it can "balloon" to 30 minutes, on a REALLY BAD day. Otherwise, 15 - 20 is about right. Also, the cost for an Uber or Lyft will be under $20. The problem with the turnpike is that it can be unpredictable, and if there is an accident, you can get stuck with nowhere to go. I have had that happen to me twice now, and it is super stressful.

Quite a regular

In my former life, I was a sales engineer hitting at least 3 cities a week. While I don't travel as much, my target is still to leave my place at Erie and 5th 90 min before take off and have never missed a flight in 10 years.
I see no difference in domestic vs international flights at EWR, unless you're traveling to Israel. The latest changes have ripping fast screenings. Though the lines are scary looking, they move fast. I headed to Antigua a few weeks ago, was late arriving at EWR, giant lines (below the escalator) and still spent 20 min waiting for boarding to start. Moral of the story: 90 min from wheels up is more than enough. 2 hours if you want to be safe. Anything more is a great excuse to have an overpriced beverage, which has its own value. Pro tip: most of the airport bars will pour your roadie into a coffee cup.

Should take no more than 30 minutes from DTJC - leave by 3:45 and you should be OK if no major accidents on TPK

Anybody have some wisdom about which car svc to use & when have the car pick me up? I have no idea how long an airport run at around 4 pm will take.
Not doing public.
