This is a much better idea than the casino one and I'd love to see it happen.

TRENTON — New Jersey voters Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a controversial proposal to expand casino gambling to the northern part of the state, meaning Atlantic City will retain its four-decade monopoly on gaming.

The ballot question failed in what could likely be one of the largest margins of defeat for any referendum in New Jersey history.

The referendum, which would have amended the state constitution to allow two casinos to be built at least 72 miles north of Atlantic City, was also one of the more unusual ones the state has ever seen.

It sparked fierce arguments across the state, drew a record amount of spending among interest groups for and against the idea, and the group supporting the plan  — Our Turn NJ — ended its ad campaign more than a month before Election Day when polling looked dismal.

Civic JC supports Trenton’s Bad Bet in opposing North Jersey casinos

Civic JC, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting good government in Jersey City, has joined Trenton’s Bad Bet in opposing bringing casino gaming to North Jersey.

By John Heinis/Hudson County View

“We are proud to stand with Trenton’s Bad Bet in opposing casino expansion, which would be detrimental to our neighborhoods, our communities and our environment,” Civic JC President Esther Wintner said in a statement.

“Some of our elected officials have shown their true colors by pushing the priorities of developers over the needs of the people.”

Big Backers Shelve Media Push for New Jersey Casino Expansion

Polling showed little appetite among the state’s voters for gambling expansion outside Atlantic City, they said

WALL STREET JOURNAL - ByKate King  Sept. 22, 2016 10:11 p.m. ET

The two main backers of a campaign to allow casinos in northern New Jersey said Thursday they had suspended their paid media advertisements, citing internal and external polling that showed little appetite among the state’s voters for gambling expansion outside Atlantic City.

Billionaire investor Paul Fireman and real estate tycoon Jeff Gural had promised to invest billions in building two casinos on the Jersey City waterfront and at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford.

I'm all for the idea.

It'll bring jobs of all sorts into the area -- nothing wrong with that.

As far as an environmental impact, community groups have to keep up pressure to ensure that safeguards come along with the project.

I predict that it'll pass.

Given that, how do the developers plan to ensure a casino in Jersey City is truly viable? I disagree with some posters that this is inherently a bad idea, but it's hard to see what will make it stand out as a success.

Huh? NYC, the largest city in the USA, is RIGHT ACROSS the river. To argue that there is really nothing in the area is silly, especially considering that there is LITERALLY NOTHING around Las Vegas, which was (and still is) surrounded by sand, as it is actually located in the Mojave Desert. People seem to forget that Las Vegas was a city built in the middle of nowhere with almost nothing to show for itself until fairly recently. As for the "competition" don't forget that the most valuable customers of AC and some of the other casinos in CT and PA are the "daytrippers" coming from the NYC metro area. If given the choice of traveling for an hour or two to PA, AC, or CT, I am sure many would choose to come here instead.

And, for the record, I don't really care for the casino idea. Just pointing out some basic facts...

It is a great idea for that vacant barren area and will bring numerous pimps and players abound to shoot craps and pull one arm bandits.

The proposed ferry links to different parts of NYC will feed that need for 'yellow fever' from Elmhurst to 4th Ave in BKLYN.

And Jersey City is closer to the Sands in PA or the casinos in CT.

What is the point of a petition? This question is going on the November ballot for all of NJ to vote. Your vote there will actually mean something.

Developer touts casino plan as 'windfall' for Jersey City

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY — Voters here in Jersey City are getting some special attention from Paul Fireman.

Fireman, the former head of Reebok International whose net worth stands at $1.03 billion, wants to build a casino just south of Liberty State Park. With the new ad campaign Our Turn NJ, he's hoping to convince New Jersey voters, and those in Jersey City especially, to approve a referendum on November's ballot that would expand casino gaming outside of Atlantic City.

Though Fireman, 72, hails from Massachusetts and lives now in Palm Beach, he is no stranger to Jersey City: he owns Liberty National Golf Club, which sits on 200 acres south of Liberty State Park. The posh club, which opened in 2006 on a site that for decades housed massive oil containers, has attracted luminaries like former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Labor leader not happy with Fulop's comments on North Jersey casinos

By Patrick Villanova | The Jersey Journal
on April 14, 2016 at 5:20 PM, updated April 14, 2016 at 5:21 PM

after Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop announced he is reconsidering his support of North Jersey casino gaming, a union leader says he's "extremely disturbed" by the mayor's apparent about-face.

William T. Mullen, the president of the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council, said the expansion of casino gaming in North Jersey is an opportunity for a multi-billion dollar investment that could put thousands of construction workers to work and create permanent casino jobs.
