Valentine's Day means big business for Jersey City chocolate shop

By Mak Ojutiku | The Jersey Journal
on February 12, 2016 at 1:25 PM, updated February 12, 2016 at 1:26 PM

JERSEY CITY -- As one might expect, business has been picking up at Lee Sims Chocolates on Bergen Avenue. The shop is known for having Valentine's Day lines that stretch out the door, and it doesn't appear that things will be any different this year.

"It is the single most busy day of the year," said Valerie Vlahakis, who runs the shop. "Easter is a bigger holiday, because it's spread out over a month, but this is intense. It's like two, three days building up, and then on that day, everybody wants it."

JJ piece?

N.J.'s 10 most romantic places, just in time for Valentine's Day

Liberty State Park, Jersey City. The park is busiest during the day, but you'll want to head over there at night for an unforgettable, impossibly romantic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline. It's the perfect place to ask The Big Question. Have drinks or dinner at the Liberty House restaurant; stroll, hand-in-hand, along the promenade later on.

Meh. If you are in LSP and have the itch for a truly great meal, skip Liberty House and head on over to Maritime Parc. Seriously, Liberty House is to Maritime Parc what Michael Anthony would be to Battello; great location, incredible views, mediocre food.

Pasta dal Cuore (BYOB) has a Valentine's prix fixe dinner menu in their window.

If 15 Fox Place is serving and not booked solid yet, that would be an awesome Vday and a true unusual JC experience. Check the Yelp, BYOB, prix fix multicourse.

3rd and Vine might also be worth checking out. Not BYOB though.

Liberty Prime, Satis, would also be relatively good, quiet, intimate options.

I agree that Madame Claude's is a great choice for a intimate meal ? HOWEVER - let me suggest that it not be for Valentines Day, and here is why. It is small, it is intimate, it is a popular choice. My wife and I did MC a couple of times for V-Day and it was always been so packed that the two-tops literally get so smashed together that is becomes one long family style seating arrangement. Prepare to share your conversation with the people on the left and right of you, as well as listen to their's.

Let me suggest Skinner's Loft as an alternate for a similar environment and quality of food with a little more breathing room. If you can get a table in the dinning room by the fireplace, it is actually quite nice.

Small, intimate, BYOB. make a reservation.

Excellent choice. Should also be noted that it is cash only. While there is a liquor store right around the corner for the BYOB, trusting that their ATM is working is risky.

This is going to be my first Valentine's Day (or weekend) that I'll be spending in Jersey City with my lady friend, and I'm wondering if there are any restaurants in particular that I should check out.

We're not too interested in anything too fancy / expensive - we're really looking for an intimate / flavorful dining experience. BYOB would be a plus. I live in the Hamilton Park area without a car, but could Uber wherever.

Thanks in advance.
