They also say brain deterioration accelerates after the age of 50. Which I guess explains a lot...

I think the voting age should be raised to 30. Young people just don't have the life experience that would allow them to make an informed decision.

Scientist are now saying the brain is not fully developed until age 25, which makes sense. Young people sometimes do scary things without realizing the consequences.

Jersey City council quashes boy's dream of voting at 16By JERSEY CITY — 15-year-old Mahsiah Imes learned a few lessons about politics last night. Lesson No. 1: you don't always get what you want. Imes, who had lobbied City Council members to lower the voting age for local races from 18 to 16, appeared before the council yesterday in hopes of watching it approve a measure that would have asked the state Legislature to investigate whether such a change was possible. Instead, the teen watched as the council decisively voted down the resolution, by a vote of 7 to 2. Council members who voted in opposition said they admired Imes' advocacy but weren't ready to signal any support for 16- and 17-year olds voting. Honestly not a terrible idea. Somewhere between what we have now and Logan's Run is an efficient form of government.

That's the point a liberal commentator made on NPR. Watch what you wish for, prosecutors reasoning if you can vote you should be charged as an adult. Anyone see the 60's film "Wild in the Streets" where they lower the voting age to 14 and the kids elect a Jim Morrison like rockstar President? Next they put everyone over 30 in concentration camps.

While I applaud his interest in promoting democracy, I don't think lowering the voting age will increase either turnout or engagement. Nor does it make sense to me in general for minors to vote.

Let's take baby steps, and start with lowering the age that a person can be charged as an adult in a crime! After all, the criteria the kid used to justify his idea applies there as well, no?

No representation without taxation? H&R Block taking over polling stations? That gave me a chuckle. Alternatively, how about a standardized test - like the citizenship test - as voter qualification? I agree with the teen's sentiments though. It's bizarre that there's no single age that defines an adult.

I'm fine with this on one condition that accepts the basis of this young man's argument: voting should be permitted for anyone paying income taxes. Full stop. If you're 16 and paying taxes, you can vote. If you're 30 and unemployed you can't.

If my 90 year old grandmother gets to go to the polls and pull the R lever without even knowing a single name on the ballot, the voting age needs to be lowered to 9. They'll at least go by who has the coolest sounding name.
I know for certain I paid more attention to politics as an angsty teen than I do now as a crotchety adult. 16 is fine with me.

Jersey City teen wants to lower voting age for local electionsBy A 15-year-old Jersey City boy is on a mission to earn the right to vote. "At 16, you're able to get a job," Imes told The Jersey Journal. "You have to pay taxes ... It can affect us in the long run on who is mayor." Imes' dream is part of a nationwide push to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 to ignite civic engagement among younger citizens. Alex Koroknay-Palicz, president of the National Youth Rights Association (NYRA), said a "belief in democracy" and the rights of young people sparked the movement.
