It does.

I know.

Engineering and cost considerations aside, I don't think it can accommodate enough pedestrian traffic in 3-hour periods (morning and evening commutes to and from work) to make a meaningful dent in mass transit. Still, it's a wonderful idea and I'm glad these guys are pushing it. If you want to do great things, set yourself and impossible goal and go for it. If you keep at it, you'll get something done. Maybe not what you thought, but something interesting nonetheless.

At 1:45 at WTC the announcement was that due to a partial bridge collapse near JSQ the train would end at Grove with free buses to JSQ (#80).

The pedestrian paths on the Williamsburg, Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridges are all around 1.5 miles long. People walk and bike across that all the time.

2) a pedestrian bridge on the DTJC side rising out of the embankment is a cool idea, and might be easier to pull off over here. But, where would it end in Manhattan??

Battery Park City!!! according to the organizers.

I'm confident there are options that don't require demolishing 4 city blocks in Manhattan.

Quote:
3) even if you find a place suitable for the bridge terminus, what makes ANYONE believe that some NYers on the other side would not sue to block such a project?!?

Almost everything big incurs a lawsuit and/or animosity. And yet, lots of big projects get built. Go figure.

Quote:

200 feet. Already in the plan. That's lower than the Manhattan / Brooklyn / Williamsburg bridges (~275 feet), which have thousands of pedestrian and bike crossings every day.

The preliminary plans include elevators at both ends.

On the contrary. You didn't raise any serious objections, certainly nothing that can't be overcome.

This isn't much more pie-in-the-sky than the High Line. A little bit, but not much. And that took years of citizen activism, including people bandying about highly unrealistic proposals, suing the city to stop Giuliani from tearing it down, and a lack of interest by the city in spending on it.

We should note that lots of big infrastructure projects had similar objections. E.g. Edison didn't think the Holland Tunnel could be ventilated. Walkway Over the Hudson wasn't exactly a slam dunk. People thought the Brooklyn Bridge would collapse. In the 1980s, the idea that JC would be gentrified would be seen as utterly insane.

If anything, I'd say the engineering and budget challenges are far more serious than anything you mentioned.

Is this a practical thing? Not really. Is it a good thing? I say yes. Again, it will be a nearly unique thing, it will be a huge tourist attraction, it will show a strong commitment to pedestrian and bike infrastructure.

I don't see why unbridled pessimism is preferable. ;)

More importantly, "feelz" don't get projects like this done. What gets it done is when you have an idea that can capture the imagination strongly enough to get people to commit to the idea over the long haul. You need lots of people and organizations pushing government entities to commit, and that takes more than clicking "Like" on a Facebook post.

The worst part is it's often fed by professionals who should know better. These renderings were done by an architect who's supposed to understand practicalities. Some of the "ideas" floating around after Sandy were just as ludicrous, like filling in the 50 ft deep main NY Harbor anchorage and channel with "reefs", like waves were the problem not the fucking sea rising over everything. There was something just recently about creating new land by filling in the east river and reducing the main hudson channel to a sliver. Somehow an idiot idea if rendered in a pretty picture gets credence.

an alternative conclusion is that the only people who took this seriously were the people who thought other people were taking it seriously. Now, I'd like to discuss using that 9/11 sculpture as a giant human slingshot.....

In addition to your first point, consider the bridge would have to be extremely high in order to accommodate cruise ships. So not only would people have to walk 2 miles, they'd have to make some kind of ascent just to get up there.

This cannot be done. It can't be done no matter how much you wish it to be so. We do need more access into Manhattan to alleviate the congestion, but that will likely take the form of the new train tunnel, still in negotiation and many years away. Sorry to burst your bubble.

This thread reminds me of the people that insist on someone (anyone!) building a pedestrian bridge across the Morris Canal, over by the Morris Canal Park, completely oblivious to the fact that a marina exists up the canal, and that such a bridge would have to be INCREDIBLY high to allow for sailboats and other ships, making for what would be the bridge equivalent of the St Louis Arch.

When you bring up facts and common sense, you get the over-trotted canned answer of "you have to dream big" or "it's only a matter of having the will to see it happen" or my favorite: with that attitude, nothing will happen. Nothing will happen because it doesn't make ANY SENSE.

The tunnels are ventilated and supervised. If they were filled with CO, drivers would be dying of CO poisoning on a regular basis.

There's a very small elevated walkway for maintenance and emergencies. There is no way that could be an option for public use.

I agree, but would prefer a tram over a foot bridge.

I would prefer a bike/ped bridge. That'd be a great commute.

For those who are counting, the Roosevelt Island tram transports around 5600 passengers per day. PATH, again, is 250,000 for the entire system. It'd have to be a pretty big tram system to make a dent in the area's transportation needs.

I'm not sure which would be more cost-effective. Tram will almost certainly cost more on an ongoing basis. Both would be tourist attractions, though.

How about making pedestrian use, respirator required and at your own risk.

Obviously the idea is a little far fetched, but in reality, something like this WILL BE needed. Some other form of crossing will have to exist in 20 years or so.

The State of NJ in particular should think about this, because this would actually generate actual, real tourism to Jersey City (not just people staying in the several hotels on the waterfront and visiting Manhattan). This would draw people STAYING in Manhattan, to Jersey City, which basically does not happen in any way today. It would also increase the desirability of staying in a JC hotel, because you can just walk across to Manhattan.

That would be seriously cool - though we'd likely need to build the casino to fund it - given the Jersey way of doing things.

Calls For Pedestrian Bridge Between Manhattan, Jersey City Pick Up Steam

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? Manhattan and Jersey City could share a new landmark attraction someday, if one man?s ambitious dream becomes a reality.

?Most of the people were saying, ?You?re absolutely nuts for trying this,'? Kevin Shane said.

I agree, but would prefer a tram over a foot bridge.

This thread is a great example of why this area sucks and likely always will. The animosity towards progress is amazing. Is the idea perhaps a bit farfetched? Sure. Will things always be the way they are today? No - car culture, in the long run is unsustainable. People are already in the early stages of moving away from/limiting their participation in it. Big change has to start somewhere - why not here, or something like it. It amazes me how backward NY is - very little innovation comes from the city, really it just monetizes ideas from elsewhere and chronically adapts ideas late. (And the height arguments are silly - cruise ships are the only things of any height at all that travel up the river from the harbor. Why should we configure our infrastructure in a way that only benefits tourists and the profits of a few corporations - especially when there are new and growing cruise ship ports in Red Hook and Bayonne.)

Rant over
