A lot of these links that have been provided are for the larger houses on the east (?) side of the street. The opposite side has what look like smaller homes, still brick and very nice looking.
Have any of those been restored?

hopefully, uncle fulop's reval will help address the property tax issue more properly. i'm sure downtown property owners will be glad to see that prices in the bergen-lafayette, jsq, greenville and the heights are rising too

For example, most Foundry residents have a car, and some of the couples living there have two cars, so they use one spot at the building lot, and another at the Park & Ride.

I live on Astor Pl, not sure what the hate is all about, but I think it's is a great block. Great neighbors. Newcomers and old-timers (who still take up about half the block) take great care of their homes. It's the reason we chose to move here. It is the longest unbroken run of row houses in jersey City, which makes it very pretty. There are some truly gorgeous homes at Summit and Astor and its surrounds. True the wires are an eye-sore, but pretty common, and they'll prolly be buried sooner than later.
Doctor's row is nice also. Along most of the N/S aves, JFK, Bergen, and Monticello, there are sketchy large apt buildings. Lots of loitering. My husband walks our dog down to West Side via Bentley and back down Gifford and there are sketchy corners the whole way. However, the area/neighborhood by Lincoln Park is very pretty, although it's not brownstones (row houses, to be precise) like downtown, it's very pretty older bigger Victorians. Taxes are a bit higher there (generally double on those larger lots), but the area as a whole is really nice, save for those few sketchy areas; just like downtown used to be.

It has tall old trees, nice Victorian homes, beautiful Lincoln park is close by. There's a few good blocks around there. As you approach Bergen and monticello it gets more sketch. I dont feel unsafe there, just not as middle class. Supposedly a theatre is to be built near St Peter's university, which is a ten minute walk away. Also some decent ammenities/shops on west side ave also 10 minutes walk away. Busses come by jfk on a regular basis and it a 20 minute walk to journal square or the westside lightrail. If priced out of dtjc, its a pretty good spot. Btw, all the stuff about Astor place is way overblown. Its an OK block, not too different from others around it: middle class with hints of rough edges and houses without much character. And the electrical lines are an eye soar on the block.

Oh my G-d--do not come to Bergen-Lafayette if you're worried about crime or parking. Stay downtown or in Brooklyn.

Parking is going to be a huge issue going forward. The large rental on Suydam, the new condos on Whiton, the new condos on Pacific all will be adding cars without adequate onsite parking will fill up the streets.

I like Pine Street, I am currently looking to buy a place there now. I tried a few years ago and got beat out by another investor. Its a lovely street but no parking what so ever.

What are some good blocks in Berg-Layf?
Not familiar with the area (no car), but definitely interested. I've heard Astor Pl is nice. Can others suggest some good blocks as starting points? Thx.

I bought my 1880s row house on Crescent Ave in Bergen-Hill in 2004 for $142,000. It appraised two weeks ago for $270,000. I have offstreet parking and it's the only house that does on the block. This is Bergan-Lafayette with all of its discomforting crime and issues. I am a happy homeowner.
Every day I hear of people from downtown and other areas of JC buying in Be-La and of others who are starting to look to buy here.

Astor Pl will keep rising.
Simple reasons. 1) Great Housess/Potential 2) I sold a house around the corner and lost a lot of $$. It is a sure sign that the neighborhood will take offas soon as I get out. 3) Monticello Ave. This street is an enigma in the NYC metro area. Where else is there a street with so many empty store fronts.
