Just stopped in a little earlier and it's nice cozy space with a decent beer selection. I really like the back lounge, though I'm not sure if making it smell like an old smoking parlour makes sense. A bit more food than just bar pies would be nice too, but maybe that will come in the future as business picks up. Digging the chess too. The whole place does feel a bit like you're going back in time, it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

Not sure how it could've sold since closing takes a couple of weeks. I do know there was an offer being placed for 560k right after the open house. It could've fell through but even if it did go for 475 is almost double what the owner paid for.

Right, I would assume the person meant that an offer was accepted, which may very well fall through.

From what I understand, there were structural problems with 13 Astor Place, which may be why it sold for such a low price.

Honestly I have no clue what the solution is but I know the first step in conquering a problem is acknowledgment it exists.

I expected as much. Perhaps if monroe were here, he could think for you but, I digress.

It's not clear exactly what problem is not being acknowledged. Is it that impoverished areas tend to have higher rates of petty crime?

And by the way, I went to school in an affluent, predominately white and asian suburb and my school had similar episodes.

Quote:

And we cannot even do that. Instead, we have people like you fueled by righteous indignation who like to "call a spade a spade," when you actually are doing nothing of the sort.

What I was implying is there's a major societal problem when 75-100 "teenagers" fight in broad daylight and we are supposed to ignore it, act like it's nothing, or act like there is some innocuous cause behind it. Literally ANYTHING except blame those responsible.

Who's ignoring it? From what I gather in the article, the perpetrators were arrested. Ahh, but that's not what you're pusillanimously hinting at.

Quote:

And this has been literally going on for years, see this article from Philadelphia in 2011.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/08/09/p ... ew/index.html?_s=PM:CRIME

In fact, that CNN article shows exactly why nothing gets fixed. You have a black mayor who is only able to somewhat frankly speak about the issue because he is black. And look what the reaction was:

"A Philadelphia Inquirer columnist, Annette John-Hall, called Nutter's church sermon a "good old-fashioned whipping" of the black community. She likes his tough stance on crime, but at the same time, she was disturbed by his remark at the church about race.

"There, he said it. In a way that his white constituents would hear him loud and clear. At that point, he wasn't talking to black people anymore," she wrote. "

So it continues. Here are more "teen" mob attacks in Chicago. You can see the video.

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/ ... n-the-Loop-200755191.html

There we go. What you didn't have the conviction to say is more explicitly stated by the articles you've linked to: It's the black community that you're afraid of.

So in summary, if I read between the not so subtle lines, the point of your original post was: that black community is a problem; I'm not sure what to do about; Thus I'll jump from thread to thread and race bait at every opportunity (because that's constructive).

Quote:

But I suppose it's easier to reserve your vitriol for the "racists" who post on Internet message boards without even mentioning race. Let's get them, that way we feel better about ourselves and like we are addressing the problem!

I can't think of anyone better to reserve my vitriol for. And you never addressed what you meant by, "... Asian youths, I'm sure."

Not really. Far leftists have attempted to redefine the word. In a repeat of the Red Scare, the word has been broadened to include nearly anything, and accusations are thrown around like candy.

Anyway, I didn't mention a particular race and if you filled in the blanks you may be the "racist." Although this misses the point. No one is forcing these "teenagers" to be such degenerates and they're only hurting each other. And I'm sure schoolwork isn't a priority for any of them.

Cut the crap. Don't run for cover now that someone called a spade a spade. You might as well admit what you are. After all you have the anonymity of the internet to hide behind.

If you weren't trying to race bait, then what were you implying with your "Asian Youths" comment?

Quote:

Since people are petrified to actually address the problem, in part due to the 21st century Red Scare, we do nothing, and most of these teenagers will end up in prison in several years. So it goes

Out of morbid curiosity, what is your solution? What is it we should be doing and are not?

Did you actually just call Timothy McVeigh an left wing fanatic? That's a little absurd. Did YOU read my links?

Apparently, hate groups love Timothy McVeigh. I guess they don't think he's a pinko. Also, pardon me for posting a link from the liberal media.

Really? Are you sure about your facts?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_ ... tivations_for_the_bombing

"McVeigh frequently quoted and alluded to the white supremacist novel The Turner Diaries; he claimed to appreciate its interest in firearms. Photocopies of pages sixty-one and sixty-two of The Turner Diaries were found in an envelope inside McVeigh's car. These pages depicted a fictitious mortar attack upon the U.S. Capitol in Washington."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centenni ... mbing#Eric_Robert_Rudolph

"In the summer of 1996, the world converged upon Atlanta for the Olympic Games. Under the protection and auspices of the regime in Washington millions of people came to celebrate the ideals of global socialism. Multinational corporations spent billions of dollars, and Washington organized an army of security to protect these best of all games. Even though the conception and purpose of the so-called Olympic movement is to promote the values of global socialism, as perfectly expressed in the song Imagine by John Lennon, which was the theme of the 1996 Games even though the purpose of the Olympics is to promote these ideals, the purpose of the attack on July 27 was to confound, anger and embarrass the Washington government in the eyes of the world for its abominable sanctioning of abortion on demand.
The plan was to force the cancellation of the Games, or at least create a state of insecurity to empty the streets around the venues and thereby eat into the vast amounts of money invested."

How about the Oklahoma City bombing?

How about the Centennial Park bombing?

How about the far-right separatists that were ready start an armed rebellion because the federal government wanted to charge a rancher cattle fees?

It seems to me that these groups are at least as dangerous as any threat from "islamo-facists". Moreover, they're much more capable in many instances.

This is a myth that gets passed around. I lived in Canada for many years. The healthcare was top notch. The only procedures that you had to wait for were elective. I also had and have several friends who lived under that system and had no desire to get rid of it.

What is true, however, is that a very large share of personal debt in this country is medical debt. That, largely, does not exist in Canada.

Unfortunately, there is currently no website for the Astor Place Association. Meetings are usually organized by word of mouth; however, I believe the president said that he was going to eventually create a Facebook page. If and when he creates it, I'll post a link here.

Don't buy into some of the hyperbole in this forum. While the area has it's problems, it's not the Gaza Strip.

I've lived on this block for the past four years with my wife and I haven't had any problems beyond garbage on my property. I would probably be considered a yuppie by most people an there are several other households on the block that are just like mine. Besides where else can you buy a brownstone/Brickrow house for 200k and still have a 20 minute commute to the city?
