NEWARK ? In the early 1980s, a 15-year-old Barry Brown spent much of his time working at Hahne & Co., a busy department store that attracted droves of shoppers to downtown Newark.

Nj.com piece?.

I would be very annoyed if WF decided to open their first JC location in freakin' Greenville.
what's so wrong with greenville? near light rail would be kuul

I feel like it is self-explanatory. Point is, if they were to open in Greenville many others from the parts of Jersey City that actually have the money to afford Whole Foods and the taste to appreciate their offerings wouldn't shop there. That would make it a ridiculous move.

Also - you don't go to freakin' Whole Foods on public transport. You drive there in your luxury car so you can bring the groceries home. And if you can't afford the luxury car then you're not shopping at WF anyway.

Ha ha ha! Doesn't this show that even a supermarket like Wegmans, which relies on car-driving customers, would rather find a way to open in BK than here in JC, or anywhere in our immediate area. They must be paying a FORTUNE to lease that 74,000 sf spot.

Put down the doobie, and everybody please calm the f down. Whole Foods is not coming to JC anytime soon, and when they finally do, it will not be in Greenville. They will likely chase the demographics that make the most sense, so it will be DTJC, or perhaps JSQ if that neighborhood ever gentrifies enough to make it worth their time/effort/investment.

Meanwhile, our best hope for a new, upscale (or, better) grocer is for TJs (or, perhaps this new WF concept being developed) to make the decision to come here. Time will tell...

Whole Foods (WFM) is trying to change its reputation as a grocery with fresh food at high prices by opening a separate chain of lower-priced stores aimed at Millennials.

The new stores will cater to a new generation of shoppers who are still interested in organic and natural foods but want a different shopping experience, executives said.

The company made the announcement Wednesday as part of its second quarter earnings release. Whole Foods, known for its organic, natural food selection, clean stores and large displays of bright, fresh produce, has been losing traction recently as organic and fresh foods have become more popular at mainstream grocery chains.

The company also early on earned the nickname "Whole Paycheck" for how expensive it can be to shop there. The new format will likely appeal in particular to younger shoppers who are attracted to Whole Foods' social and ethical ethos but turned off by the price of the high-end food, says Neil Saunders, CEO of retail consultancy Conlumino.

This will open the doors to a demographic closer to JC .

Not sure why an article from three years ago, and which I am pretty sure had already been posted before, is showing up now. But, since this is the JCLIST thread that refuses to go away, I will leave this here: CNN/Money article on new WF chain concept. Apparently, WF has decided to create a new concept chain that will carry cheaper products, targeting the demographic of cost-conscious shoppers. Stores will be smaller, but "hip and cool"...

Sustainable profits.

Hope JC can get on the Whole Foods Train in the JSQ area.

They mask their coporate profile well.

A recent discussion on RetailWire.com explored Whole Foods Markets? new found success targeting secondary markets with smaller stores.

Whole Foods first began testing stores under 40,000 square feet in 2008, down from its traditional 50,000 to 70,000 square-foot boxes. Finding success with some as small as 25,000 square feet, the strategy was accelerated last year as part of its bold expansion plan to reach 1,000 stores.

The six new stores opened during its fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31 averaged 38,000 square feet, yet produced a 29 percent higher sales per square foot ($776) versus the prior year?s new store quarter?s openings. New stores also produced about 450 basis points higher store contribution versus last year?s class, and in many cases benefit from lower build-out costs, lower rent, and lower utilities and taxes.

Right?! I do not get the obsession with WF - I work near the one by the WTC PATH in Manhattan, and stopped in once in search of something I didn't think I would find at Stop&Shop in the Heights. Yuppie wet-dream! Way over-priced, cult-ish and creepy (the aisle with the chickens who never left the farm they were hatched on - until, well, you know...). Is there no end to the cognitive dissonance of the 1%?

I'm with you! My sister lives in in South Jersey and I love visiting her and shopping at Wegman's - their closest store to JC is all the way in Woodbridge; I've always wondered why they don't have anything farther north.

Hmmm. Don't forget that, at least twice, we have seen fake WF "coming soon" signs in construction sites in DTJC. If indeed it is true that a WF is going into that space in JSQ, it will certainly be a feather in Fulop's cap that he managed to lure them into town, and particularly to an area on which he partly staked his reputation and future aspirations. After all, he campaigned and promised to bring development to the areas previously overlooked. I can't imagine a better way to spur and accelerate the gentrification of JSQ than by luring Whole Foods to the neighborhood.

Also, wrt all those threads and debates as to which area (JSQ vs. Heights) is a better financial investment, well.... I guess that matter has been settled.
