Thanks, Shadrack! I'm not sure why but someone mistakenly told me that there was a Woolworth store near the State Theater. There was probably another department store near the State Theater which I may have visited. I remember Liss Pharmacy & J.M. Fields. I used to go to Liss Pharmacy for cold remedies. I went to J.M. Fields to shop for school clothes before the school year began when I was living in JC. I left the city in late June of '75.

It could be that a Wolworth store existed near the State Theater during an earlier time period than the '70s

I might be four years late in posting this -- but anyway -- if you look at the reflection -- you will see there was a Woolworth's in Journal Square.

To clarify, Brummer's was at what we called "the Junction," not near W. Side Ave., and the two guys who used to run the newspaper operation were a guy we called "Skeets," and "Con," later known to me as Connie Hartnett, who I believe was a policeman, or detective.

And the guy who used to run the Lamont newsstand up at the Square was a guy they called "Patty," or "Paddy." He had "pegged teeth" and probably the worst breath of any person I ever met. At that time (circa 1970), he was an old timer.

I also fondly remember a bum whose turf was the West Side Area but also Journal Square once in a while who we called "Hoochie." He billed himself as the "hoochie-coochie man." A kind soul who never hurt anyone.

I used to sell newspapers at night in front of Brummer's, on Communipaw and West Side, and we also covered all the bars, bingos and bowling alleys from West Side through Greenville. As a young kid I also used to run a crew of guys who used to put together the Sunday papers for AJ Lamont news stand that was at the entrance to the old "tubes." We used to set up in the walkway of the old bus terminal.

Benmore was on Communipaw Ave., a few doors up from West Side Ave. I used to bowl there as a kid and I used to reset the machines and remove stuck pins. My wife's grandmother was asking about the Baldwin Ave. bowling alley because she used to live around the corner from it and she used to bowl there. Thanks.

Yes, Hamilton Park was Needle Park. People going to the hospital would have someone drive them and get out of the car and run to the door. That was in the early 1970's.

Grove St was a little scary in the 60's too.

in Hamilton Park there was a tunnel in the park that the kids could run down into and exit about 10-12 feet away

and HP had used syringes all over the place. no one walked through the park after dark, not even as a pack of teenagers like us...

Yes, wasn't the store also called "Goldy's"? The female proprietor was short with white hair. I 'm vague on the A&P, think it was next to the Orient movie house.
Yes, it was George's Bakery. The cupcakes with the small toys...toy rings? Thanks for jarring my memory!
Also, the small Public Library opposite the candy store.
The laundromat, recall the clean smell of clothes washing, lots of bleach tho.
The Myrtle Tavern, then next corner of Bostwick Ave was Flaherty's Tavern. More when I can...

I remember the candy store on Ocean and Claremont. It was down a few steps.
I remember the playground on Arlington and Claremont.
Where was the A&P?
Remember George's Bakery? Halloween we used to get a cake
with little prizes in it. You had to be very careful eating it.

I remember when the 100 steps had about 80 cause they were in such bad repair. It took years to get them taken down.

Few understood why I sat in the back of the room snickering when the cry went up that there was a need for the 100 steps had to be built.

Brook Valley Day camp was great fun.

I remember going on walks and we would find salamanders. Some of the guys were good at catching bull frogs.

I also remember there was a peach orchard nearby and we would go there and snatch peaches off the trees. Those peaches were gigantic. One day, when a bunch of guys were in the tree, a branch snapped and fell on one of the guys. He was hurt. The branch fell on his shoulder. After that we ran back to the camp. Someone said the orchard owner had a shot gun and that he used it to to shoot salt pellets at the kids.

It was great fun.

Here's a tough one--anyone recall a little variety shop called Georgie's on Wayne Street?

It was up from the turnpike heading towards the water. He always had a lot of things in his window that would catch a kid's eye.

I can remember as a kid just looking and looking in the big window at Rogut's--all of those wonderful toys there.

Rogut's Toy Shop only left about a year ago, and the pawn shop on Bergen is still there and bigger/better than ever - they took over Rogut's old space next door.

I remember the fruit and vegetable guy and also the knife sharpening guy. The F&V guy would yell peaches, apples...with a loud screeching megaphone. And when the knife guy came around the older Italian ladies would run out of their houses with meat cleavers in hand. Both vendors and their trucks looked like a throwback from the Bowery Boys days.

I remember Murray's toy store. We used to go there to get the latest Match Box Cars and Hot Wheel cars. If I recall correctly, they cost 89 cents! As for Hot Wheel cars...we walked there one day specifically to get the Spittin' Image...they didn't have it that day, but they finally got it in stock.

It was great to be able to go to a store dedicated solely to toys. Those were the days. We had great fun.

And, again, if I recall correctly, they were a block or so from Sandler's...where the boys would get their gym shorts (green for 40 school...blue for 30). The girls were relegated to those blue hideous one piece suits.

I remember going to Brummer's with my grandmother. It was always a big deal. We felt like we were going somewhere special. I remember also when they shot scenes from the movie: The Sting at that location.
