Sweeney continues to be a POS?

If the facts are as previously stated (that the garbage is already being transported through JC streets on regular trucks) then I don't see how the cancellation is a smart decision. It was implied from the beginning that the garbage is already being brought to JC, then loaded onto trucks, which then drive through the streets of JC on their way to the landfill or incineration facility. If that is not the case, then it is probably good they cancelled. But, if the garbage is already coming here, this new setup would have been an improvement.

Exactly! The garbage is here already. Now, the garbage will be here and we?ll get cash for it.

OK, my head is spinning. Are any of these established facts incorrect?

1-This garbage is already transiting JC, but on the roadway in unsealed trucks.

2-The PA bought the terminal with the expressed purpose of establishing this transfer station.

3-The garbage is not going to be landfilled in NJ, it's going to be incinerated in a state of the art power generation facility. This is a job creator in addition to the transfer station.

So, WTF? There's more political turnarounds and backstabbing going on in this show than in Julius Ceasar!

That said, I've always agreed with Sweeney's point that NY should be dealing with it's own garbage. There's 150 miles of river all the way to Albany, at any point of which they could build a facility to deal with their trash. But it's politically expedient to export it so no NY voters have it in their hood.

What a two faced, self serving explanation by Fulop. Last week he was jamming it down the throats of Greenville residents, today he says the Port Authority trying to pull a fast one??

4. Yvonne will continue to blame tax abatements for the city's fiscal position.

Looks like you are wrong on all counts (well, I don't care about 4) according to Fulop's latest statement that the deal will not happen.

Seems like the Port Authority is the unlikely hero in this mess, listening to residents as Fulop completely brushed them aside. Funny that according to his statement, he only listened to residents AFTER he got the deal approved.

I'd like to know the answer to two questions:

1. Why did Fulop jam this deal through like that to begin with?

2. What gave him such a sudden dramatic change of heart to say the deal won't go through at all? After all, the Port Authority simply forced a due diligence period, including community outreach. They didn't cancel the project outright.

The Port Authority won't let the CITY make the deal. The Port Authority acquired the Greenville Yards for this purpose. So they will likely make a deal, less beneficial to the city, in the future.

I suspect Fulop turned around on this because he realized that the Port Authority was going to play this role. Slowing it down to make them sound concerned about the community, yet ultimately cutting a worse deal.

Well, jaded, sarcastic, cynical, or whatever mood you are in at the moment with regard to this, I think we can all agree this is democracy at work. It is somewhat refreshing to see things play out like this.

Yeah, I agree. Frankly I'm surprised someone who clearly wants to be governor next term would have ever tried a move like this to begin with. Shove a very impactful project through in 2 days?

And that's not getting into the concerns that others have raised that JC was only getting a fraction of the money it should have. Terrible all around, but I guess in the end it worked out.

I wanted to reach out and close the loop on this. I have listened to many residents from the community over the last few days individually and have decided that we won't be moving forward with the waste transfer station. Part of leadership is recognizing when you are wrong and this is such an instance. What's more, in meetings with Council President Lavarro and Councilmen Rivera and Gajewski they provided perspective that I value and I think this is best before considering moving forward

You are correct stillinjc, I am sure the boys at the golf course as well as the investors for casino gambling pulled Fulop aside and told him to "knock it off." When your potential campaign contributors tell you to stop, you listen.

I say b) and c), if the news is true.

Port Liberte doesn't mean shit. Stinking up half of Fireman's golf course does.

And of course jamming it through like that without asking your constituents looks just AWFUL if your plans are to run for higher office.

Tweet from NJTV news anchor, David Cruz, this morning:

@CruzNJTV: In Jersey City, @StevenFulop flips on transfer station: "Part of leadership is recognizing when you are wrong and this is such an instance."

I can't find any more info on this change of heart, anyone else hear anything?

What I can't reconcile is the PA "trashing" the deal after it bought the property explicitly for this purpose, according the linked article from 2010. It does look like it's simply to screw with Fulop.

Someone should ask Paul Fireman how he feels about Fulop's proposal to move 800,000 tons of NYC trash a stone's throw from the southern holes of Liberty National, now that he signed a 20 year deal with the PGA Tour and has floated a casino proposal. Yvonne, care to call him? I am sure he will be thrilled. The holes south of Chapel Avenue are closer to the proposed trash transfer site than Port Liberte. Imagine 2017 President's Cup on these holes...it would be laughable if it wasn't actually happening...

The deal (as far as taxes) predates both the current administrations of JC and the Port Authority. In this case it appears that the Port Authority cares more about JC residents than Fulop does. 2 days, no public meetings, ramrodded through the Council with the Ward Councilman not knowing/absent/or bought off already? Given that the project had vehement local opposition previously this rush job has terrible optics for Fulop. regardless of how you or he feel about the PA.

As well he should. The Port Authority is an unaccountable bully that has repeatedly impeded Jersey City's ability to prosper.

From this article:

Quote:
News of the deal, given initial OK by the City Council last week only two days after Fulop announced the plan, sent shudders through Greenville and Port Liberte, two Jersey City neighborhoods close to Greenville Yards. Residents there, who have fought such plans in the past, said they feel "betrayed" by the proposed deal with IESI.

Regardless of how you feel on this issue, can't we all agree that a mere 2 days to consider it is absolutely ridiculous?

I understood why Fulop rushed the McCabe ambulance deal through given the campaign donor implications.

But I wasn't aware of any connection between the waste management firm and Fulop.

What gives?
