Nonsense, you feel "sorry" for her. You're shaking your head in a knowledgeable, world-weary way to cover up the fact that you don't have the balls to do/say what she did. Maybe her courage was lubricated by a little too much wine, but if more people simply said "nope, we don't put up with this crap around here", this would be a lot better place.

This is a video about a young idealistic girl who truly believed all she was taught at the New School of Social Research. She then went out into the real world ,and quickly realized she couldn't do anything to help people who don't really want to help themselves.
I watch people walking down the street dropping their garbage with no care that someone else will have to eventually pick it up. Tax money is usually spent to have garbage picked up. Someone recently mentioned that they think people who litter, are people who don't pay taxes and just don't care. They are anti-social. In the meantime, the garbage gets higher and higher.
Do you really think this is a racist rant or a melt-down? is it what happens to a highly motivated, idealized, committed individual who is trying to effect a positive change in their environment and realizing it just can't be done? It's very sad. I feel sorry for her because she dared to care.

Okay, so I'm a little confused on this one. I would certainly understand and be every bit as pissed off about people leaving garbage in front of my home too. But people are also saying this happened in front of a liquor store. So which was it? Are there apartments above the liquor store and does she live in one of them? Does she live right next to the liquor store? Somebody explain.

This happened in front of Ray's Liquors on MLK Drive -- most Jersey City liquor stores let losers hang around and leave trash -- it is a city wide problem. Take Old Colony -- it is that liquor store in there that is holding that place back -- Jersey City liquor stores knowingly sell single serve booze and crap -- and don't move their customers along -- or even clean up after them!

I agree, the city needs to not allow 38 liquor stores in one section of town.. I think liquor stores should be on 440 or by the Holland tunnel not in residential areas..... Also the main stores that keep customers lingering are the liquor stores that sell lottery, these pathetic people use the liquor store as a casino, buying beers, cigs, and scratch off tickets all day and night.

The Jersey City's mayor's aide who was caught on video in a profane rant about litter is getting support from her neighbors.

Brooke Hansson, a research assistant in Mayor Steve Fulop's office, is seen in a two-minute video posted Friday on Facebook yelling about people who leave garbage in front of her Bostwick Avenue home.

"She's right," said Patrice Felts, 28, of Bayview Avenue. "How would you feel if every day people hang out in front of your door, leaving garbage?"

Other residents of the area agreed, though few would provide their names to The Jersey Journal. A 28-year-old woman whose sister lives across the street from Hansson said the men and women who loiter on the street don't all live there and don't respect the neighborhood.

All the resident who spoke to The Jersey Journal said they hope Hansson faces no disciplinary action.

"She don't need to get in no trouble," one woman said.

um, Yvonne .... the reporter himself felt the need to apologize for his work as "the Hawk". The point wasn't whether people should use pseudonyms on message boards, it was Shurin's suitability to function as a journalist covering Fulop. Surely there is reason to believe he has a bias.

She lives in the area, I was at the African American festival Saturday and she was mentioned by everyone I ran into in a positive way, the rumor as of Saturday the corner was clean and the bums have not been seen for the last 48 hours. I will confirm this later this week when I ride my bike over that way.

So someone is attacking Shurin for being Hudson Hawk, amazing! How many people here hide behind phony names and not admitting their relationship with a city hall job?

Regrettably, Jersey City government is largely free from the scrutiny of a professional, objective, and free press. What we?re often left with is the predictable antagonism of a few wonky shepherds who are quickly dismissed every time they cry wolf. In this case however, even a real press would still leave Ms. Hansson and her employer accountable for the sort of behavior that demonstrated even less class than the conduct she presumes to berate.

@T-Bird thanks for referencing that article. Shurrin sounds extremely unbalanced and has some weird obsessive issue with the administration. Half of that letter is about him threatening Fulop and the other half is his own strange thought process with the overriding most important issue being anti-Semitism.

A video of Jersey City anti-litter campaign coordinator Brooke Hansson going on an expletive-laced rant has been making the rounds on Facebook.

The footage (Warning: Vulgar language), which is believed to have been shot around 3 a.m. on Thursday, shows Hansson, who is also a photographer and run's the city's mural program, cursing and screaming at citizens on Bostwick Avenue about garbage and noise on the street.

Here are what some of our readers are saying:

melinabee

Damn, I despise trash too, but I think I would rather the trash than a certifiable neighbor like Book Hanson!

Madibo

I am glad she was not harmed in that "war zone". 3 A.M. wow she has "brass" ones. JC City Council members should be so brave. You don't see some of them after they win elections. I refuse to name mine because he is a "ghost" councilman, you see his name in JJ but NEVER seen in the Ward he supposedly represents "west of kennedy blvd"

Sound Machine II

Not all parts of Jersey City have noisy people hanging out at 3 am and streets full of trash. There are many sections of JC where the old-timers (and now new comers) take pride in their property and surrounding neighborhood. In my hood we ALL keep the trash off of the streets, we all look out for each other as it should be. There are noisy people some mornings but they are neighbors ?fighting? over who will walk the hood and pick up any discarded street trash first (?I saw that potato chip bag first, no I did?) and who will take in the neighbors garbage cans first. Nice neighbors. (try it you?re like it)

fedupwithJCbull

Hey Brooke! Never run from a fight. The only people mad at you for speaking the TRUTH are the ones living a LIE.

goodbyeJC

Is all over Jersey city. We have the same problem on my block. People walk and dump their garbage in the sidewalk, they throw their McDonald bags out their car window, they don't pick up their dog poo, neighborhood kids play with garbage cans leaving the mess all over the place, grown men hanging out late at night and leave their liquor bottles behind. I can go on... But if u tell them something, they curse you out and want to fight with you. I had it with this City. It's a stressful town. I've been here 40 years and it's not getting any cleaner. Some people just don't care! I use to love this town, but now its time for us to leave. Let someone else deal with the high tax and trash. Thank You Dirty City.

Jaded gal Heights

I'm sorry, this is story because a neighborhood that she lives is filthy and apparently those neighbors do not care. Actually this could be all of Jersey City..Yes, she probably should not have went on this rant; but, honestly who has not said the same words behind close doors.

ocap

She works in the Mayor's office and is held to a HIGHER standard. Period! This was very inappropriate and I hope she is forced to step down from her "litter" campaign.

lavaroy

I have an anti-litter program. Make those on welfare, SNAP, free housing, free healthcare, and who collect every free taxpayer fueled handout known to man do work in exchange for benefits. They would be cleaning it up and less apt to litter and destroy things they have to clean up and repair. This lady might be crazy but her message is correct possibly conveyed in the wrong manner.

tuffer1

She's not crazy...She's pissed off. And who could blame her?

SockoTheBum

I don't know what her state of mind was, but she was pretty brave to even be on Bostwick Avenue at that time, much less confronting the locals. If there were more people like her in Jersey City, maybe it wouldn't look like a dump (except for downtown).

Amelia Hollander Ames

Wow, "the local vermin?" This is really showing the hidden racial tensions that have existed in JC since I was growing up there. She's equating littering and playing loud music with somehow deserving being brutalized by the police. Unacceptable. Let her go, Fulop.

JcMomma

She is absolutely correct. I live in that area and many of the people hanging around there do not even live around there so they do not care about it. They throw trash everywhere. It is disgusting. Loud obscene music until 3 or 4 in the morning, kids running around until that time and no police presence. She was fed up and that?s just the way she expressed it. I see her every day coming in from work as I am leaving from work and she doesn?t bother anyone. They sit in front of her door every single day. They gamble, smoke drugs, drink and litter. They are very DISRESPECTFUL.

MagnaCarta

She had that "oh crap, i'm being recorded moment" at the end. What a drunken fool. She should be removed from her position immediately for this immature act. Spoiled stupid yuppies, she's lucky she didn't get hurt. She should be throwing fits about the murder rate in Jersey City. At least she had the sense not to use any racial slurs, because she's obviously a flaming racist.

Carolyn Rogers

Her frustration about garbage is justified, Her behavior and the way she handled the situation is unacceptable for a person in he position in City Hall.

Hudson County View is so biased against Fulop its laughable. This obviously doesn't excuse this woman's behavior but the title of the article leads readers to believe she is Fulop's direct aide rather than a random office worker employed by the city.

Just review the recent articles regarding the Embankment and how HCV praised developer Steve Hyman while insinuating that the city was going to turn it back into a freight line.

JJ comment:
The thing that City Hall needs to get in check are also the other quality of life issues. Here?s a few off of my long list. (and not just this administration but the previous one also)

1- Gas stations that don?t pump gas anymore but seem to collect cars to ?work? on. A great example of this is the ?gas station? at Montgomery and Westside. There must be 50+ cars, box trucks, trailer cabs, vans , and limo?s parked there. A few of them are totaled. (WTH?) Not only on the black top but on the sidewalk. That is such a busy corner how no one from the city could see that mess is beyond me. You would think SPU would complain being right across the street from it. A real nice sight for potential students.

2- Signage gone wild! Look around the city there are signs everywhere. I always thought the City Council (and neighbors) had to approve a business?s signage. Example?s the used car dealer at Danforth and rt 440. They have 4 flag type banners (LOANS, NO CREDIT) , a huge (hip hop )billboard, and a freaking long awning with ?USED AUTOS? on it stuck on poles in the front of the lot. Not attached to the free standing office trailer. Example number two look at the intersection of Caven Point Rd. and Morris Pesin Dr. why is Pole Position allowed to blanket the intersection with racing flag type banners on poles and a sign on the bridge fence? Don?t they make a ton of money? Hey Jersey City (or Hudson County) CHARGE them for the advertisement space!! It is on our taxpayer property.

3- Weeds (and I am not talking pot) ?drive around and look at the massive weeds all over the place. They are popping out of cracks in streets and sidewalks. Down in Central Jersey there is a town that has a weed killer golf cart. A small golf cart with a tank on the back. They drive around and spray weeds with a human/pet friendly dose of poison. Why can?t JC do that?

With regard to the above signage comment does anyone know if it is legal for a taxpayer to rip/cut down business signs/ banners that are attached to public (state/county/city) property? I would think it was ok right?

She is very lucky she wasn't introduced with a bottle over the head. The in your face confrontation / rant is not the way to go ... she can't issue fines or force these 'slobs' to clean up after themselves, but what she can do is have those with authority and power to issue citations ... I'd imagine she could arrange police and sanitation officers to issue citations and fund a late night blitz to do so (overtime) ... She could also help mitigate the problem with more trash cans and signage (warning that litter louts would not be tolerated and fined accordingly with legislation as reference on the sign) in hotspots.

She could also investigate how many citations are actually being issued annually for this type of litter dropping (noting where and what time these citations are being issued) - She might discover that the department responsible for enforcement are inept and a review of management and frontline officers is needs to better manage the problem!

Maybe some creative trash cans would help promote less litter and voluntary compliance to the problem !
