I don't feel sad for Darwin Award winners. There are far better things to get upset about.

I mean seriously. THEY'RE FROM JERSEY!!!

More delusion. They may not intend to put it to actual use, but that IS what they are doing. Imagine a competitive fishing rod caster saying he's not practicing to fish and it's completely unrelated to fishing.

Yeah, watch out for those deadly biathlon olympic athletes who shoot people, or these dangerous archers putting arrows through your hearts. Are you out of your mind?

I don't believe so. At least I can tell a deadly weapon when I see one, whatever it's being used for at the moment. This does appear to be your problem, telling a weapon designed to kill from a piece of sports equipment that can kill if used improperly, like a bat or golf club. The fact that there are weapon competitions doesn't make the weapons less deadly.

How do you know what their intentions are? They are simply only shooting targets. Some only ever shoot targets and enjoy it for sport.

That's like saying cars are designed to turn their wheels, completely ignoring the point of that function. But that's par for the gun debate's disconnect from reality. Boris's "cars designed to burn gas" is similarly deliberately stupid. The point of a guns existence and history is to fire a bullet that kills something, just like a car's is to go somewhere, not drive around in circles on a track.

So when you shoot targets, are you killing them?

More deliberate stupid. I already said it, a gun's purpose is no more to shoot targets than a car's is to go around in circles. You can do either, even with a device manufactured for that purpose. But that doesn't get rid of the central idea: transportation on the one hand, death on the other. Shooting targets is practicing to kill. Denying it is either delusion or wordplay.

Must we leap on every tragedy and call for more regulations? The parents here weren't criminals, mental patients or terrorists. They did something stupid when they allowed a child to use a high-powered weapon. Laws will never wipe out stupid.

The child was not playing with nor celebrating she was being instructed. The should be an decesending age limit such as driving, and alcohol consumption.

Regardless of what is designed to do what, there are certain activities that, while potentially dangerous for adults, should be totally off limits to children. Even if seated next to the best driving instructor in the world, a 9 year old does not belong behind the wheel of a car.

Idea that guns are designed to kill is like an idea that car engine is designed to burn gas.

Not sure what I mean? ok, let me explain. Sure, some car engines do burn gas. However, burning gas is not the purpose. It is not the goal. It is not something that an engine designer aimed to achieve and it is not why most of us use those engines.

How do I know that? The're ways, here is the simplest one: if we thought that a purpose of a car engine is to burn gas, we would have to consider an electrical engine 100% useless.

I am going to leave "what are guns designed for" as a home exercise.

Do you ever take your kids to a pool for swimming? Have you ever wondered how many kids drown each year in this country, - compared to how many people die from the gun-related accidents?

Almost everything that you do can be done in an unsafe way, against common sense and safety rules.

Here's a great video about gun safety and how quickly it can go south. For some of you I guess it can be considered "whacking material". http://youtu.be/1rOOSk7yWkI

No "rest of life" for the instructor. But maybe a Darwin Award. Commentary on NYTimes.com last week said the Uzi is well known for pulling up and to the left.

Lots of unsafe things are fun, doesn't make them smart. Smart is choosing the right balance of risk/reward. My altime favorite sport is whitewater kayaking, where choosing poorly can be fatal. It takes insight and experience to gain such judgement, something a child is not capable of, and certainly some adults. But at least a river is not DESIGNED to kill!

So, you're saying gun ranges are unsafe. Based on what?

Who said anything about gun ranges? It's the guns that are inherently unsafe and designed to kill. From Cheney shooting his buddy to the kid who swept my son and several others on the range with a loaded 12ga because he turned to get his glasses, failures of safety protocols are destined to happen. A certain number of these will be fatal. Failures of safety happens in other sports too, but fish hooks or baseballs are not designed to kill.

So... no data about guns being unsafe, eh?

Yeah, you're way off on this. Everyone with experience in these things agrees that the instructor was doing a bad job of supervising, the parents shouldn't have allowed a little girl to use such a powerful weapon...gun control is serious topic for serious discussion. This accident isn't a part of that discussion.

Momentarily put aside the issues of gun control/background checks/personal freedoms...the fact is, guns ARE fun. I've had enough of them for one lifetime, but you'd be amazed at what happens to a first-time shooter at a gun range. Time and again I've seen nice, law-abiding, kindhearted people go "ohymygod this is so cool!" when they take up a firearm. There's something about the power of it. Or something.

That said, handing an Uzi to a 9-year-old is misguided, at best. Everyone involved will pay the price for that dumbness for the rest of their lives.
