Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and Freeholder Bill O?Dea made public two competing amendments tonight to the county?s $512 million 2014 budget which would each each cut the county tax levy by more than $2 million.

The proposed budget currently includes a 4 percent tax hike, with Hoboken set to pay $8 million more this year and Jersey City about $6 million more. Four more municipalities would have much smaller hikes, while the six remaining would see county tax cuts if the proposed budget is adopted as is.

The administration?s budget would result in a reduction in the county levy of about $2.2 million, while O?Dea?s amendment would see a reduction of about $2.9 million.

The major difference in the amendments is that O?Dea?s calls for cuts of about $1.7 million and the administration?s amendment calls for cuts of about $876,000.

The two amendments were released at tonight?s freeholder meeting in Secaucus at which budget questions were fielded by the directors of the county Law Department, Surrogate?s Office, Register?s Office and Health and Human Services.

The amendments are to be introduced at the June 5 freeholders meeting and will be voted on at the June 12 freeholders meeting. A vote on the budget is also expected on June 12.

Tonight?s meeting in Secaucus Town Hall was attended by freeholders E. Junior Maldonado, O?Dea Albert J. Cifelli and Doreen M. DiDomenico.
