Brew, worry not. You haven't missed much. Hopefully this changes.

Mojo is a cool spot but yeah, it's out there.

My understanding is that Lamp Post and Lucky's have a sort of special status so that they can have bands. You'd have to PM me for details but it's typically Hudson county stuff.

If true, I guess it means we can welcome sub-standard music to Jersey City ;)

These guys haven't booked a decent lineup in over a decade (commence bashing of me).

Todd also books the Bell House, in Brooklyn, which has a consistently great lineup, imo.

these shows are often publicized through facebook event invites, be it through dancing tony, lucky 7's, or members of the bands themselves.

The last time I saw live indoor music Downtown was salsa at the Hard Grove, but it was so ridiculously loud we had to leave. You DO NOT need to amplify horns and drums in a space that small! The band in Brooklyn was drums, sax, tuba and guitar, but only the last was amped. Real pros know how to play to the room.

Great, wonder if they'll have cramped bench seatting and a bunch of dirty shitty pillows there too.

Yes, there is an utter lack of venues of ANY size in JC.

I recently had some beers at Lamp Post and there was a band in the back (I think they have a band every Saturday night).

If somebody buys the shameful Powerhouse Lounge, it could be a spectacular venue for bands. In my fantasy, that space would be turned into a brewpub or craft beer-centric bar with a small stage for live acts.

Hopefully this will start to change! I'm very excited to check out a show at White Eagle Hall and am hoping it's the spark to a new music scene in JC. Seems like the enthusiasm is everywhere in town... now you need the venues to start making it happen.

Correct, the two restaurants are in the basement. One of the restaurants will have a small stage I think, to have smaller performances downstairs.

Based on what I've been told it's two restaurants - one is Madame Claude, the other is similar to the restaurant at Maxwell's. The big performance space is above the restaurants.

Wait, there are going to be 2 restaurants inside White Eagle Hall? I was under impression that it was an open space, that was going to be used for performances. NYRgravey9, can you share any more intelligence?

Ok, so obviously we have very different tastes in music as I don't care for any of those. But, the good news is I've seen plenty of bands at Maxwell's that sound very similar to those bands. Long story short I don't think we're doomed to sub-standard music, it's just nice to have another musical option that will cater to certain tastes on some nights and other tastes on other nights.

Before I bash, can you give an example of a bill you think you would not be sub-standard music? If you only had one night with 3 slots to book the type of music you think this town needs, what would it be? There's certainly a lot of crappy music out there, but saying there hasn't been a decent show in Maxwell's in over a decade seems a little hyperbolic to me, I'd like to hear what you would consider a decent lineup.

They're opening one of the two restaurants in the hall, not owners of the venue.

From what I understand it won't be Maxwell's operating in the space, per se. Rather, the building is being restored for the purpose of hosting concerts and events, and Todd Abramson, a co-owner of Maxwell's, will be booking the bands. Or at least somewhat involved in booking the bands.

Actually information as a whole has been limited and murky, so if anybody can chime in with more details that'd be awesome.

Journey?? Really? I'm not as old as you think...

VA2015 said it perfectly, "People will always twist their nostalgia to reflect the heyday". Much like CBGB's, there were good shows here and there, but nothing to write home about. Not in the last 5 years anyway. If Maxwell's closed without the news coverage, hardly anybody would have noticed.

To your other question, I don't play shows in Hoboken. I play Manhattan, frequently.

Every story out there quotes people as saying "I remember this great show I saw, 7 years ago" or "way back in the day" which is the point.

Hoboken continues its evolution towards a completely homogenous and uninteresting town lacking any character whatsoever.

Every legendary place has a heydey. People will always twist their nostalgia to reflect the heyday, not the slow decline before the end. Hell CBGBs booked a lot of utter crap in its run - some of those terrible bands were just terrible, others turned out to be the Ramones ;).

Uncle Joe's had plenty of parking in the area - it was before luxury condos took over the "PAD"... and it was purchased, shut down, and turned into.... a parking lot for luxury condos!

If you listened a little more, you would have heard Todd say that a parking lot would be part of the plan. The Uncle Joe's lot was not used for parking. It was a utility area and is now being turned into condos.
