How long until some developer buys up the massive, gated-in parking lots surrounding the co-op towers at 280 Marin Blvd. (between Montgomery and Columbus). You wanna talk about an eyesore.

Those parking lots are a city-planning catastrophe. Not only are they hideous and sprawling, but they break up the walkability and continuity of the entire downtown area by creating a massive, inaccessible fortress for a solid 3-block stretch between Montgomery and Columbus.

I realize that they were built during a time in the 1970's when no one would have guessed that downtown JC would become what it is today, but sheesh.

A developer should buy up that space from the coop association and agree to provide some kind of raised parking deck for the coop residents.

I think it's actually just South of City Hall?

Fantastic news! That parking lot is an absolute eyesore in a prime location. When we were first looking around JC and considering buying that lot stood out as totally out of place in an area as dense as DTJC.

Hooray! Another ugly parking lot gone and downtown gets more filled in. Let's hope the sewers can handle it...

Construction on apartment complex near City Hall to begin

Construction on a six-story luxury apartment complex in Downtown Jersey City that was given initial approval over six years ago is finally about to start.

Developers Silverman sent notices last week to motorists who use its parking lot at the corner of Montgomery and Grove streets, letting them know that the lot will soon close in advance of construction on the 99-unit apartment building. The lot sits just east of City Hall.

For a parking lot and in the future a new lovely building with lots of retail stores. I'd much prefer that than having noisy children. Quote:

In 2008 or thereabouts.

Edit: Also keep in mind the renderings show a building that stretches the entire length of Grove that occupies the Grove & York corner as well.

It looks to me as though the new building appropriately defers to City Hall as the architectural focal point of the area. I think it would be even better if the five cupulas that were once topped the corner and entry tower of city hall were restored to add more interest and height.

For the curious, here's the amazing structure that occupied this lot prior:

Resized Image

Anything at this point would be better than the abandoned lot. New renderings look like something torn directly out of Zeppelin Hall area, minus a few floors on top.

Also, I doubt this will crowd the corner like someone stated above. The City Hall is recessed and that corner will never feel crowded as a result.

Looks ok, it will be nice to have something on that corner at last, I hope there will be parking as there is zero available in the area. All vehicles parked in Majestic parking lot were submerged during Sandy, but in the graphic below there is obviously no above ground parking.

Yes - the food truck parking lot.

Nice. Not offensive. It's good to see all the retail on the ground floor. The scale seems appropriate relative to nearby buildings. Looks like it has one floor more than the Majestic.

The drawing gives the illusion that there's nothing else nearby. The reality is that it is a massive structure which will crowd and cramp the corner.

Not that it matters, but something taller and slimmer would suit the neighborhood better. But the same could be said of me.

It's pretty decent looking in my opinion. I think it could use a little more detail around the windows, such as decorative lintels and/or sills.

Does anybody know when they are going to break ground? That lot is really an eyesore, and has been for many years.

A bit bland, but IMO better then the old version found under 200 Montgomery St here :
