Looks like there was some major change of plan about 1 1/2 month ago when they started to remove some of the new pavement to re-expose the steel beams. I would not be surprised if they figured out that the structural work they were doing at Tonnelle had to be replicated everywhere (surprise surprise). Now there are tons of crews everywhere. Make your own conclusion as for impact on budget/timelines..

Are they in any rush to get this done?

I thought inbound lanes were supposed to be done this summer and that the crews were supposed to be working non-stop all weekends (not just to replace floor beams) when they started to be running behind schedule. Looks like they still have a lot to do before they move the outbound lanes to the southern side.

Pulaski Skyway to close on weekends during spring

Friday, March 27, 2015, 12:54 PM  - Associated Press

Pulaski Skyway to close on weekends during spring JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — More work begins this weekend on the Pulaski Skyway that will force drivers to use alternate routes.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, contractors will remove and install floor beams on the 83-year-old span. New deck panels also will be added to the north side.

The bridge will be closed in both directions over the course of eight weekends through the end of May.

Detours will be posted.

The state Transportation Department says the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway project will extend the life of the bridge by 75 years.

Here are the latest plans for handling the additional traffic on Communipaw and Grand during the Pulaski shutdown. Switching from no parking or standing on the south side in the morning to the north side in the afternoon does not make sense! People heading out of nyc can still take the pulaski south to go home. These rules should only apply to the south side of these street for both commuters and reverse-commuters. Did I miss anything here Mr Shea?

Good question. Anybody on this?

The PA does not control the Pulaski Skyway, nor did they schedule its maintenance. All that happened is Christie hit up PA for repair funds.

A few more flights going over JC is not going to impact... almost anything. I grew up pretty much in a EWR flight path, it's not a big deal.

Probably explains a lot. PA pay you too?

Quote from today's NJ.com news: The PATH. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which increased the frequency of PATH departures from Newark Penn Station for the Super Bowl, will continue at the same level during the skyway rehabilitation, providing an additional 5,000 seats in the morning peak period.

Does it mean continue at the same Superbowl level of service? Or, does it mean continue the current capacity?

It would have been nice if the State didn't raid the transportation trust fund to fill a general revenues gap. Maybe.. just maybe we would be talking about the plans to build a replacement for the Skyway, instead of shutting down and rebuilding it.

The Skyway has always been a poorly designed roadway.

Three informational meetings scheduled on Pulaski Skyway lane closures

By The Jersey Journal
on March 24, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Jersey City and the state Department of Transportation are holding two meetings in the next week to discuss the upcoming Pulaski Skyway shutdown.

The first is set for Thursday, March 27 at 6 p.m. at the Hank Gallo Community Center in Lincoln Park. The second is next Monday, March 31 at 6 p.m. in School 7, 222 Laidlaw Ave.

City officials say the meetings? format will allow residents to hear and offer comments on the state?s and city?s plans to mitigate the expected traffic problems the shutdown will cause.

The northbound lanes of the Pulaski Skyway will close for two years starting Saturday, April 12 so the DOT can replace the bridge deck, part of a $1 billion rehabilitation project funded by the Port Authority.

The shutdown is expected to cause havoc on Jersey City streets as commuters find new ways to get to the Holland Tunnel.

The state is also hosting an information session tomorrow to discuss the Skyway lane closures. The session will run from noon to 8 p.m. on the sixth floor of St. Peter?s University?s Mac Mahon Student Center, 47 Glenwood Ave. Presentations are scheduled for 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m.

Buuuulllshit! Port Authority had an entire year since Sandy to do this NWK-WTC weekend shutdown, but instead decided to have it coincide exactly with the Pulaski shutdown.

Closure of Pulaski Skyway's northbound lanes off until March 29

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
February 18, 2014 at 6:25 PM

Drivers in Hudson County who use the Pulaski Skyway are getting a temporary reprieve on the planned two-year closure of the roadway?s northbound lanes.

Hudson County?s top judge says the New Jersey Department of Transportation has informed him that the planned two-year closure of the northbound lanes of the Pulaski Skyway is being pushed back to at least March 29. It had originally been announced the closure would follow Feb. 2?s Super Bowl and then had been scheduled for the beginning of next month.

While the news makes some drivers happy, Superior Court Judge Peter Bariso is upset about it.

Bariso said he changed the Hudson County Superior Court hours of operation in order to ease the commute to the courts following the lane closures based on the DOT telling him the lanes would close at the beginning of March.

?I?m disappointed because of all the work we did changing the court hours, all the notices we sent out, people changing their lives and (New Jersey Supreme Court) Chief (Justice Stuart) Rabner actually signed an order changing the court hours in Hudson himself,?? said Bariso.

Hudson County Superior Court courtrooms are located the Brennan Courthouse and the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City. They currently operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but beginning March 3, they will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bariso said he will stick to the March 3 date for the hours changes because all the notices have been sent to courthouses workers and attorneys.

A spokesman for the DOT said the exact date for the closures will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, the president of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce said she is worried about the impact of the lane closures on county businesses and is concerned that when the official closure date is announced the DOT will not have fleshed out strategies to lessen the impact.

?They were very communicative when the closure was first announced last year, but in the past few months, there has been little information forthcoming,?? said Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Maria Nieves.

Nieves also said she expects the volume of cars that will have to be diverted onto other roads will further stress the area?s infrastructure.

?We are talking about taking a significant number of cars onto other roadways that simply were not built for this type of traffic,?? Nieves said. ?The roadways just have not caught up with the development. I think it is going to change behavior and people may not want to do business in this area.??

The lane closures are part of a $1 billion Skyway rehabilitation project.

Pulaski Skyway travelers urged to find alternate routes before northbound lanes close

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Follow on Twitter
on December 06, 2013 at 6:19 PM, updated December 06, 2013 at 9:10 PM

In preparation of the closure of the northbound lanes of the Pulaski Skyway in March, state officials are urging motorists to familiarize themselves with alternate routes and to consider using public transportation.

In March the two northbound lanes, heading toward Jersey City, will be closed for two years as part of the $1 billion Skyway replacement project. The southbound lanes, leaving Jersey City, will remain open, state Department of Transportation officials say.
With the closure, nearly 40,000 daily vehicle trips will be diverted and DOT officials are proposing that motorists use alternate routes such as the New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur and the Turnpike Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension (I-78), where an eastbound shoulder will be converted into a third travel lane during morning and evening rush hours.
Commuters can also try Route 1&9 Truck, where adaptive traffic signal control technology and entrance ramp improvements will help accommodate additional traffic heading toward Jersey City and New York City.

Public transportation changes will accommodate more passengers on NJ TRANSIT rail and bus, and PATH trains. Additional ferry service is being explored and increased carpooling and vanpooling are recommended.
NJ Transit plans to add additional seating on Raritan Valley Line trains operating to Newark Penn Station from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from Newark Penn Station from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Efforts are under way to enable NJ TRANSIT to debut a new bus line in early March 2014 which will offer regular, peak-hour service along the Route 22 corridor between Watchung and Newark Penn Station serving several intermediate communities via Mountain and Morris avenues.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey plans to increase the frequency of PATH departures from Newark Penn Station to accommodate more NJ Transit rail and bus riders. NJ Transit will also add two train trips each morning and evening on the Morris & Essex Lines between Summit and Hoboken Terminal.

One morning and evening train will also be added to the North Jersey Coast Line train between Bay Head and Hoboken.

Carpools and vanpools are to play a role and the DOT will provide $325-per-month subsidies to enable NJ Transit to run up to 10 new vanpools. Carpooling and commuter flexing trips around peak travel periods are encouraged.

The DOT and Transportation Management Associations will work with large employers to promote vanpool or carpool. The TMAs is working with large employers on the Jersey City waterfront to identify opportunities for employees to work from home or to flex the start of their workday.

Some 25 variable message signs will help motorists make mid-trip route decisions, there will be a TV and radio campaign in February, a YouTube video will familiarize motorist with the project and travel alternatives, and twitter will be used to provide alerts.

The DOT is also coordinating with the Port Authority to educate truckers and port employees to help them navigate the region. Basic information for truckers is online at www.panynj.gov/truckers-resources.

A widget on 511nj.org will provide information.

Motorists will be able to use to email questions or concerns and sign up for updates and newsletters at www.pulaskiskyway.com

I was thinking of leaving the city- but yeah- even by the tunnel 139 is what, 5 lanes? Yet it's two lanes before, and no real exit lane for 1/9 north which backs everything up.

How about a car ferry off of Fishhouse road to downtown JC?

Then you could bypass the Skyway!

and yes.. I am not really serious about this idea..

Not of much use. Everyone is going to be on Communipaw and Grand.

Perhaps the city can take a look that.

But this is all a band-aid. When are we going to get a real fix, especially for the 1/9 approach from DT...there is always traffic and 1/9 north is a total backup at all times. Weekday afternoon it took 10 minutes from Tonnelle Circle to Manhattan Avenue.

They need to expand 1/9 including Pulaski to really fix the problem.

There aren't any good options once the closures happen.

If NJDOT has some ideas, I'd like to hear them. If they don't I wish they'd just say so.

the pulaski closing next year is going to force many of us to take 78 and thereby pay much more in tolls. i am a reverse commuter, i got from JC-Hamilton in the morning and from Hamilton-JC in the evening. i usually enter/exit the turnpike at 13A and take the 1&9/pulaski to avoid the outrageous tolls you pay if you exit at 14C. JC residents should be able to pay a reduced toll rate while the pulaski is closed. don't staten islanders pay a reduced rate currently due to a bridge closure?

Maybe more people will take the newark-jersey city turnpike as I was forced to do after 911, maybe the 78 turnpike will have more east bound lanes as it looks like over part of the bridge beyond the tolls right now. In any case it won't be pretty.

I take 23 to 78 to the pulaski now. I suspect once it's closed, everyone will be taking the turnpike. I could be over reacting. But I'm imagining total grid lock.

Would 24 to 78 be a good alternate? I drive this way home from short hills and have no problems. If the Newark bay extension is crowded, I usually take the turnpike north to 15 and take the truck route to grand and grand to downtown JC.

If you are driving just on the weekends like a lot of folks in JC do, then why not take the tpke for southbound travel?
