Think it would create more pedestrian traffic for people to meander from place to place without intrusion of cars- crossing street from say Roman Nose to the bar going into Hudson Camera for example. Or LITM then going to a movie across the street. http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.co ... -back-to-the-future/?_r=0

Well, really my preference would be bossa nova jazz. I'm in my 40s and would prefer something that catered to a 35+ crowd, but even when I was younger I liked lounge music/bossa nova. Feel like that aspect of JC is missing or I haven't found it yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32_tkje6NjU

They really should eventually close down Newark Avenue from Erie Street to Grove to vehicular traffic and create a pedestrian hub there for nightlife, shopping, eating, services, etc. Just in that mere span, I could see a boutique hotel (it's so close to path); an indie movie theater like the Quad, Landmark Sunshine, Angelika -- not everyone wants to go to New York for such films or drive out to Montclair, Chatham or Bowtie in Hoboken (those large clothing stores that extend from Newark to Columbus, they are very deep cavernous spaces, would be such an ideal spot); and a lounge that serves just dessert, drinks or tapas and offers jazz or chill house music (Hotel Costes, David Sabat, Dmitri, Little Louie Vega, Bill McCamie).

Ate at Shadman last night for the first time. Very good. Convenient for downtowners. Okra was excellent. Okra, Chicken, Mango Lassi, Meat Kabab, Naan, small side salad for 19.50. Only complaint is they use plastic and styrofoam plates. The food is served in dishes, but if you share, someone ends up using the styrofoam. Shadman should take the next step and use silverware and dishes. The place is clean and looks like it was recently redesigned. Will eat there again!

That has been up for a while. Maybe BBB is run by the owner of the building and would move out it they could command enough rent? Newark is getting better, there's at least 4 places under construction at the moment. I know we have the ice cream/yogurt place, the bookstore and another bar coming in. I don't know what they're doing in the newer building next to Sawdee.

There is a "For Lease" sign on the BBB Department Store. So that will be likely vacant soon too.

I noticed another vacancy - the Party Supply Store on the north side of Newark near Saigon Cafe. The sign said they have moved to Westside Avenue.
Any truth to the rumor I'm starting that a joint venture between John Lobb and Thomas Pink will be opening?

Unbelievable.
What would be so bad about not having a main street full of vacancies and dollar stores? What is so generic about Washington St? Certainly few if any NJ main streets have as many late night conveniences. DTJC and Hoboken are lumped together because they are similar...but one glaring inadequacy on our side is that Newark Ave aside from bars and restaurants has little to offer its residents, while Washington Street actually has stores, some 24-7 or late night. Also, LOL at the idea that ethnic communities have been run out of DTJC...shall we go on listing all the old school establishments around for generations? BTW...Hoboken has a bunch as well, especially Italian ones. I always find it funny how some people have such generalizations about DTJC (generic) and Hoboken (fratty) but lest someone raise the public crime rate in the rest of the city they are clueless...I'd take generic and fratty and not having to the HBLR/NJT to get around any day over dealing with much less unfortunate reality in Greenville and Bergen Lafayette.

and you must be 12 years old if this is why you think people hate Hoboken. I hate it because its whitewashed, boring, a long ass strip mall which dtjc is headed. Just for the record I have no problem getting ass outside of NJ which I prefer. smdh I really thought this was a grown folks message board.

Hoboken is tremendous for singles in their 20's. When you move into your 30's and 40's, you need to start thinking about moving on. My guess is that people who hate on Hoboken weren't getting laid.

that waterfront is incredible. (I lived in Hoboken when that shore was just a long stretch of abandoned chunks of concrete, and the plan was on to run the light rail alongside it.) JC missed a great opportunity to build a world-class destination along our riverside.

Am I the only one who can see pluses and minuses to both Hoboken and DTJC? I like JC better for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't mean that everything is better about JC. I'd love to have Hoboken's waterfront and I wouldn't mind not having 5 vacant storefronts within a 30 second walk of the PATH. I wouldn't trade that for the drunken frat party atmosphere, but that doesn't mean everything about the place is universally bland and uninviting.

Actually there are plenty of Italian, Polish, and Spanish shops all over downtown JC. In fact, I'd argue that there is greater diversity in old school ethnic eateries in DTJC than in any other area of JC. Not sure where you are going with that one, user111.

HA!!! I use to like dtjc back in the mid 90's it is now boring and not very interesting. I miss all the Italian, Polish, Spanish shops. I wish you all get what you want but for the most part dtjc has lost most of it appeal. Its trying to too hard to be something its not.
