For the record, I disagree with the Christie weight comments. I have a right to be offended by "toady." I also disagree with the correlation between Milly and Katz. Milly is nothing like Katz. Milly has done everything on her own. After graduating Columbia, she organized low-wage homecare workers with ACORN. Then she came to work for 1199. She has negotiated several contracts and ran successful campaigns as a union leader. She has built alliances with employers to fight nursing home cuts in the state budget.

As opposed to public comments made about Christie's personal weight problem... "union toady" is not bad, basically means the union says jump and she says how high? You could also describe her as "water carrier" for "union hacks". it's not a personal attack, Botox Barbara might be rough but that's politics. Don't forget Corzine was bedding the head of the CWA union... also giving her 500K loans to buy property in the Tea Building Hoboken.

You may disagree with her politics and her positions but calling Milly a "union toady" and Barbara a "Botox Barbara" is really uncalled for.

Milly Silva 'the dog ate my vote'. She couldn't be bothered to vote in the last few NJ elections?
Other than her being a woman and a Hispanic and a union toady, what makes her suitable to run? Oops, those are EXACTLY her qualifications for the looney left! She should be proud she's made her way through life into a great job overcoming plenty of adversity along the way. Of course, none of that is a qualification for dealing with important statewide issues. Since her own party isn't supporting her or Botox Barbara, we the voters won't either.

Gubernatorial hopeful Barbara Buono?s choice of labor official Milly Silva to join her on the Democratic ticket as candidate for lieutenant governor has been greeted with some strong criticism.
I don?t mean the chorus of derision from Gov. Chris Christie, his staff and supporters such as Hudson County GOP Chairman Jose Arango, which was expected and automatic. More objective observers, however, have pronounced Silva unfit to assume the governorship, if fate and circumstance should require it, because she never has held public office at any level. It ain?t necessarily so. Experience in government is a qualification that a candidate can place before the voters, along with achievement, eloquence, empathy, wisdom, good judgment and a host of others. Lacking it isn?t a deal-breaker, though, and having it is no guarantee of successful future service to the public. Ronald Reagan hadn?t served in elective office before he became governor of California ? his principal previous experience in a non-acting job had been, like Silva?s, as a labor leader (president of the Screen Actors Guild) ? but he turned out to be a fairly successful government executive. Sarah Palin was a governor when Sen. John McCain impulsively chose her as his vice presidential running mate, but, outside of a hard core of admirers, few think she was ready for the Oval Office then or is ready now. For years, New Jersey governors and legislators have run on r?sum?s full of experience in making and executing laws, and how?s that worked out for us? It?s given us a state with the highest property taxes in the country, an inadequate infrastructure, a mountain of debt and unfunded pension and health-benefit obligations, and economic recovery figures that lag behind the nation?s. Silva may never have been a sheriff, a township councilwoman or a school board member, but she has other life achievements worthy of consideration. Before people reflexively dismiss her candidacy, they should get a clearer understanding of who she is, hear what she has to say, and see how she does when she debates Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, Christie?s running mate. She may know more about how New Jersey works than her critics give her credit for. She?s had plenty of opportunity to observe government from the viewpoint of a citizen and a working person. A Latina who was raised with her three siblings in a Bronx public housing project by a single mother, she went on to graduate from Columbia University. She?s a mother of three whose husband is a stay-at-home dad. She?s a long-time labor organizer who now is executive vice president for the New Jersey region of 1199SEIU, a local of the Service Employees International Union, which represents 7,000 nursing home workers in 74 facilities and is billed as New Jersey?s largest long-term care union. The Star-Ledger has referred to her ?long history of organizing immigrant workers and battling with health care operators and political leaders,? including current and past state officials who sought to cut state funding for nursing homes. It would be inspiring, in fact, to think that Milly Silva?s achievements were the main reason Barbara Buono put her on the ticket. The truth is that she, like most running mates, was picked for practical political reasons. Buono clearly hopes to motivate Hispanics and labor, two key Democratic support groups, to show up at the polls Nov. 5 and give her a fighting chance against a heavily favored incumbent. Virtually abandoned by her own party, she?s in dire need of money and troops who can get out the vote; the SEIU has a reputation for supplying those essentials. George Gresham, president of Local 1199, has been quoted as promising that the SEIU will go all-out collecting funds and mobilizing volunteers to support Buono and Silva, the first labor leader to run for statewide office in New Jersey in decades. ?We expect to raise considerable sums to make this campaign meaningful,? Gresham said. ?The sky is the limit.? As for Silva?s qualifications: The U.S. and state constitutions forbid any religious test for holding public office. To require prior political experience ? the freeholder test? ? would relegate a lot of people, including women and minorities, to the back of the line. It doesn?t make a lot of sense. http://www.nj.com/times-opinion/index ... campaign=Wake%20Up%20Call

I guess calling Christie a bigot is ok, but calling the SEIU loonies isn't. Last time I saw the SEIU thugs was at Liberty State Park, when they were busing in those in favor of illegal immigration for a rally. They were cutting flowers from the flowerbeds for themselves. When I told them not to, they told me to f**k off. 'Nuff said.

Weiner, Spitzer, Sharpton, Edwards, Bill Clinton (I'm throwing him in there) may have been womanizers. You could argue that they've been demeaning to the wedding vows they took and the spouses that they said them to. However, not a single one has gone out and passed laws stripping women of their rights. I at least provided a link demonstrating specific references. You threw out Acorn as if any association should be a negative. You called the SEIU "looney" lefties, without even a shred of a reason. If you are going to go on some sort of ad hominum attack, it's best you back it up with some form of evidence...

Republicans war on women? Have you seen the way we have Spitzer and Weiner showing their utter disrespect for women? And the mayor of San Diego? Al Sharpton? John Edwards?
Where is Hilary Clinton calling out the mayoral candidates in her New York? Give us a break, please.

Sadly, with Republicans continuing to push for a war on women?s rights throughout the country, it isn?t a leap to say that Arango is part of it. I think most people realize that not all Republicans are sexist. It just seems to be those are in a position to make laws pushing those agendas. Texas Monthly Washington Post Quote:
Not that Buono is really the answer, but Christie is an unabashed bigot. The fact that so man Democrat officials support Christie says nothing of Christie and more about them. They like the green he gives them. Christie is simply a continuation of the poor leadership this state has seen for decades. I still await word that he?s done something to help the state instead of his ego.

Barbara Buono's running mate-before she talks about helping people vote-she should start to vote herself. Do we really want a person one heartbeat away from being CEO of our state who's been a toady for Acorn and the SEIU looney lefties? Look where decades of Democrats caving to union demands has gotten our state-do we want someone who's been partially (the running mate) or totally (Corzine's right hand budget gal) responsible in Drumthwacket?
The fact so many Democrat officials are supporting Christie's ticket tells it all.

Milly Silva is a grand pick, but not for this job New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial nominee, Senator Barbara Buono, right, introduces Milly Silva as her running mate. East Rutherford, NJ The Star-Ledger By Tom Moran/ The Star-Ledger July 30, 2013 Milly Silva had never been a candidate for public office until Monday, so we should probably be polite and begin with the good stuff. We can turn later to the horrendously bad judgment Sen. Barbara Buono showed by picking her as a running mate. Silva was one of four children raised by a single mother in a public housing project in the Bronx, and yet she managed to graduate from Columbia University on a scholarship. Instead of chasing money with her diploma, she remembered what her mom went through working at a nursing home for poverty wages with no health insurance. So she went to work organizing unions for low-wage health care workers. She succeeded grandly, and at age 42 is a union vice-president who negotiates contracts for thousands of people like her mom, while raising three children of her own with her stay-at-home husband in Montclair. Monday, she found herself on a makeshift stage in a packed meeting room at the Meadowlands Sheraton, telling people how she reacted when Buono asked her to join her ticket as a candidate for lieutenant governor. ?More than anything else, I thought about my three children,? Silva said. ?And I thought about the New Jersey I wanted them to inherit.? This came about 10 minutes after she had stepped on the stage, and suddenly, the smile she wore when she was introduced was gone. She was speaking now with hard conviction, with a focused anger that left no doubt this was heartfelt stuff to her. Gov. Chris Christie has handed more than $2 billion in subsidies to corporations, she said, but vetoed an increase in the minimum wage. He?s closed down health clinics that poor women rely on. He?s raised taxes on the working poor by cutting back the earned income tax credit. He?s done little to limit rising tuitions that are punishing middle-class families, while taking away their property tax rebates. And so on. One potent indictment after another against Christie?s brand of royal economics. View this choice through a narrow political lens, and it makes sense. Buono has almost no money, and has generated no excitement. Silva could help on both fronts. Her union, the Service Employees International Union, spent $69 million in the November 2012 elections on behalf of President Obama, more than any other union. And it put an army of volunteers in the field. So Buono is at least knocking on the right door. And by choosing a Puerto Rican woman, Buono no doubt hopes to rally a Democratic base that has gone AWOL. In the latest Quinnipiac poll, 35 percent of Democrats said they preferred Christie. Among women, the governor was beating Buono by a margin of nearly 2-1. If those numbers don?t change decisively, Buono is dead. So what?s wrong with this choice? The answer is that Silva is not remotely qualified to be governor of New Jersey. She has never held public office ? not as a legislator, not as a school board member, not even as an appointed advisor. Keep in mind that if a governor becomes incapacitated while in office, the lieutnant governor could serve for up to 16 months without facing voters. Yes, she could wind up being an effective governor if the job were thrust upon her. Ronald Reagan held no public office before he became governor of California. Michael Bloomberg was new to the game when he was elected mayor of New York City. But it?s a big risk. And Buono knows that. Why else would she emphasize her own political experience, especially the years she served as chairman of the Senate budget committee? That was a proving ground. It helped her develop political skills, and it told voters where her priorities lay. Granted, Silva is a woman of undeniable substance. It?s a good bet that she will someday be a player in her own right in New Jersey, a state with a grotesque shortage of both Latinos and women in its halls of power. But with this pick, Buono is taking a reckless gamble with the state?s future in order to pump energy into a struggling campaign. It was her first big decision, and it was a clunker. I agree... there was no comment on her gender made... strictly qualifications... I might be a little offended if I was his secretary (male or female) and he might think about apologizing to that individual because they probably make more important decisions in their job than the Lt. The energy Bruno and Co. are wasting here would be better spent condemning Weiner and the San Diego Mayor Filner if they want to drag this to a national level with the "War on Women" talking points.

I can see how someone who takes the thought police orders close to heart may find the use of the word "secretary" offensive. I've heard that the goodspeak word is "executive assistant". Apart from that, - what exactly is asinine in that statement? He is saying the "working in close proximity to X" doesn't mean you are qualified to do X. That seems like a reasonably obvious and uncontroversial idea. He is saying that his opponent is not qualified. That may be considered disparaging, but this is not a dirty game. Question of competence is important. And if you can see the sexist part, - would do us a favor and point it out?

It seems like folks are commenting without reading the article. Quote: Jose Arango, the GOP chairman in the Democratic-stronghold of Hudson County, told the political website PolitickerNJ.com that Buono?s selection of union leader Milly Silva as her choice for lieutenant governor candidate was like ?picking my secretary.? Arango then went on to disparage Silva?s experience, equating her to a CVS clerk who is promoted to pharmacist. I can see how someone could deem that sexist. It's definitely stupid and asinine.

If I am not mistaken, his comments were to the effect that she is not qualified for a position.
What exactly was the "demeaning to women" part? Like, for example, if someone was to question my qualifications, would it be immediately considered as something "demeaning to immigrants"?
