Yes, I recall in days long past, remnants of this "Healy" of whom you speak. This city has tried hard to bury the memories of this misguided and troubled entity.
Let us never speak again of "he who shall not be named" And please change the bar's name to "He Who Shall Not Be Named's Bar" Quote:

Todd Abramson did an interview about Maxwell's on WFMU's Aerial View last night. He suggested JC fits the criteria for his next venture but he didn't confirm his plans.
New York Magazine published a great oral history of the venue this week.

Sounds promising: "Mr. LoPiccolo has committed to preserving the building's historical details and charm even as he adds modern necessities such as soundproofing. "It's going to be a destination yet again," said John Gomez, a local historian and teacher. "This is what I live for in preservation, buildings being renovated and reused and not just sitting there abandoned."" --WSJ article linked below

I think it will really help in extending Newark Ave as a restaurant/pub row. If only we can make the other end of Newark stretch towards the Powerhouse.

Well, that particular place is not far from Healy's Bar, which would mean they'd get more business. I can only assume that they'd help get past the red tape since it would be a boon to them

This is all cool news. Whether Todd winds up being involved or not, it seems like new things are happening in JC and that's great. Parking would be a huge help cause a NJ venue needs to consider more than just JC residents. It can't rely much on people commuting from Brooklyn cause the same bands anyone books here will be playing there too.
Am I selfish to hope that this opens and Todd also opens his own thing? Maybe, considering not too long ago all anyone did was mourn Uncle Joes.

I hope the current facade of the White Eagle Hall remains the same through the remodeling process.

Co-owner of Hoboken's soon-to-close Maxwell's music club is looking at Jersey City venueBy Maxwell’s co-owner and booking agent Todd Abramson said he’s been talking with Jersey City developer Ben LoPiccolo about booking shows at a hall in Jersey City after famed music club Maxwell’s closes, the Wall Street Journal reported. “I’ve had a few conversations with Ben,” Abramson told the Wall Street Journal, referring to holding events at White Eagle Hall, 337-339 Newark Ave. “My sense is that there would be much more support for what I do in Jersey City from both residents and the city itself than I’m finding in Hoboken right now.” Since last month’s announcement that the beloved indie-rock venue will be closing at the end of July, rumors have been circulating that Abramson, whom many credit with creating the venue’s unique atmosphere, might seek greener pastures in Jersey City. Most of the rumors stem from comments Abramson made praising Jersey City and likening its community of artists and musicians to that of Brooklyn. At the same time, Abramson has been critical of the changes he’s seen in Hoboken over the years and cited difficulties with providing parking and a radically different bar scene as reasons for the musical hot spot’s closing. “We were offered a renewal with rates that weren’t necessarily onerous,” Abramson has said. “But after much thought, given the changing nature of Hoboken and the difficulties of trying to run a business in this town, we decided it was time.” Looking to the future, Abramson called White Eagle Hall “an option,” and noted that he was looking at several sites around Jersey City. The former Bingo hall gained national notoriety in the late 1980s as the cramped training facility of the nationally ranked St. Anthony High basketball team. LoPiccolo, the CEO of Ben LoPiccolo Development Group LLC, has been in the process of renovating the historic White Eagle Hall since he purchased it in 2007. Included in those plans are an 800-person, multipurpose arts space and two new restaurants. While it remains to be seen whether the hall, which is scheduled to reopen some time next year, will be able to replace the soon-to-be-defunct Maxwell’s, Abramson told the Wall Street Journal that he’s more than willing to try. “I understand that the closing of Maxwell’s creates a void in New Jersey, and I’d like to be the person to turn around and fill that void,” Abramson said.

Right Tommy, cuz God knows there's like NO traffic in Brooklyn or Manhattan, NObody uses cars.
Did you not read/hear of the multiple complaints of booked bands' vans being booted/towed? My roommate's boyfriend has actually shuttled people to Maxwells, driven back to JC to park, then hoofed over to the show. What if everytime you took your boat out, you had to circle around for 5-15 minutes upon return, looking for a berth? White Eagle Hall will be a venue, Todd A. may book it, but make no mistake, there will never be another Maxwell's. My Stepdad took me to my first ever shows there, Portishead and the Loud Family.

Maxwell's has a huge draw from all over New Jersey. A lot of bands will play Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Hoboken. It has definitely been a destination for people to see bands without heading into the city. The only other place in NJ on a similar level is Starland Ballroom which is far for North Jersey residents and usually hosts much bigger/more commercial bands.

A little confused with all the talk about parking, including from Abrahamson himself. Wouldn't the core target audience for such shows be coming from JC, Manhattan, Brooklyn? Who would be driving? I mean obviously some would, but is it significant enough to require off-street parking?

There seems to be a lot of parking available on the blocks behind there which are under the Turnpike and adjacent to the baseball field.

This is great news. I've always wondered what would happen to the building since it's a great old space. Curious if they will work out any sort of parking along with it?

Such good news. It's not quite transporting Maxwell's brick by brick to Newark Ave but it's the next best thing.
If the new mayor is serious about rebranding Jersey City as a cultural destination he would do well to make sure this project doesn't get suspended in build-out and inspections for the length of his term.

The distance between the prospective building and the grove street path is much less than the distance between the old maxwell's location and the hoboken path.

Well it is a little over 1/2 mile away from the PATH, so that's a decent walk. Still it is close enough that it shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully it does act as an anchor and pull more business out that way.

Great article. The people involved all sound organized and serious.
I noticed in the article, the WSJ made it sound like the Hall was really far from the "nice" part of Newark Ave. A little perspective is needed here; the building is only about 5 blocks from the Grove St. PATH. It's really part of the same strip - even if that end of it is a little grungier. Having an active music/restaurant/arts space down there would make a really good anchor for that end of the street. Looking forward to it.

Great news!
On a side note, while some people on JC List complain that the NY Times doesn't cover JC enough it is nice to see that a real paper like the WSJ does.

There's been a rumor floating around about this for a couple of weeks that has been (somewhat) confirmed by the WSJ:
