This sucks. You could do what the other side is doing - write a Letter to the Editor of the JJ about it. Please tell the campaign folks about this and the location of these signs so they can replace/fix them, if possible. Any chance any residents on these blocks have security cameras? Would love to pin these spineless a-holes.

Please do help us. Anything you can do is appreciated.

I?d love to see the polling that?s going on. I?m surprised a newspaper hasn?t attempted to do their version of polling. Is there a way to get Nate Silver following the race?

It really is a political machine type of thing. Healy is the incumbent with the party?s backing. These people really aren?t paying attention. Heck, I?m not even sure Bloomberg could point out Jersey City on a map.

No. They are private. Some results may leak to the media.

By all accounts the race is very tight. That's why you don't hear either side crowing about being ahead and may explain why Healy decided to take the campaign into an exchange of negative ads.

Jersey City and the echoes of 2004

By Max Pizarro | April 23rd, 2013 - 2:26pm
Politickernj.com

JERSEY CITY ? Delighted by President Barack Obama?s endorsement of him, Mayor Jerry Healy?s Obama-love fusillade continues in Jersey City, where at least one insider said it reminds him of another campaign Healy ran: 2004.

That was when Healy successfully campaigned for his first term as mayor.

Mayor Glen Cunningham died in office that year, creating a special local election on the day of the regularly scheduled general election.

Running for president against incumbent George W. Bush, John Kerry was the overwhelming favorite in Jersey City.

In a crowded field of mayoral candidates including Lou Manzo and then-Acting Mayor L. Harvey Smith, Healy went into overdrive with Healy-Kerry signs. He won.

Obama?s endorsement of Healy opened up the chance for the mayor to again implement the strategy of national linkage, and he has hit it hard in his re-election effort, with nearly all his post-endorsement pieces featuring some mention of Obama.

But while the sitting president carries more weight in Democratic Party-saturated Jersey City, being on the ballot with Kerry in a presidential election and driving that hand to eye association as the Democratic candidate gave Healy a distinct mechanical advantage in 2004.

This year, Obama?s name is not on the ballot, but Healy?s allies argue that the endorsement is important because it revalidates Healy with Democratic voters.

?Even the Fulop people acknowledge it gave us a bump,? said a source close to the mayor. ?People on the fence in wards E, F, and A who might have been 50-50 have told us they changed their opinion and are supporting Jerry.?

A Fulop ally noted that while November?s special election in 2004 was technically nonpartisan, Healy ?pretended? he and Kerry were on the same ticket. ?It helped,? said a source, bitterly, who tried to beat Healy that year, too.

Someone else rose in the public political eye as well in 2004, albeit unsuccessfully, as downtown Councilman Steve Fulop, with the support of Mayor Cunningham, challenged then-U.S. Rep. Bob Menendez and lost in the Democratic Primary.

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

An anonymous letter criticizing Jersey City firefighters who support mayoral hopeful City Councilman Steve Fulop was posted in fire stations recently, leading to an admonishing memo from fire department brass that says political activity of any kind will not be tolerated.

The letter, obtained by The Jersey Journal, includes the names of 14 fire department employees who reportedly support Fulop over incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy. The two men are among four mayoral candidates in the May 14 citywide race.

The employees are backing Fulop ?for their own personal gain,? reads the letter, which is unsigned and not on any official letterhead.

?This notification is to let all our members know who the sell-outs are in the department,? it reads. ?They are all X-HEALY supporters now they want a favor from FULOP because they feel they were F*****. In one way or another.?

The letter, which claims Fulop plans to slash the department by 30 percent, ends with this note: ?ALL 100% FACTUAL AND TRUE.?

Fulop responded with a slam at the Healy campaign.

"Whether it is teachers or firefighters, Mayor Healy clearly is using fear and lies to try and win the election as he has no record to run on," he said. "I have no plans to cut the fire department, so this is just another Healy dirty trick."

A firefighter filed a harassment complaint as a result of the letter, which he says was on display in firehouses for nearly a week. The day the complaint was filed, Deputy Fire Chief Charles Donaghue issued the memo decrying the ?political activity.?

?There is to be under no circumstances any political activity of any kind by on-duty members, either in or out of quarters,? the April 11 memo reads. ?Any harassment or retaliation directed at individuals mentioned in said letter will result in severe disciplinary measures.?

City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill noted that political activity is a violation of departmental protocol, and said the letter was only found in a handful of stations.

"The fire director took immediate action and had the chief of the department inspect and clear any firehouses of the anonymous literature and issue a reminder of the rules and regulations to all fire department personnel," Morrill said.

The letter came to light on the same day that the Healy campaign announced its support from the Association of Professional Firefighters of New Jersey. The president of the group, which represents city fire officers and firefighters, says in a statement issued by the Healy campaign that the mayor ?has shown he understands the needs of fire officers and fire fighters.?

The election is Tuesday, May 14.

This reminds me of 2004 election with Healy on his porch, passed out and naked. BTW, I tried searching for the picture but looks like it has been scrubbed very well. Most of the sites that hosted the pic have been removed.

Anyone has a link to it? I need a good laugh. Then I will cry that this man was actually elected.

In intensified Jersey City, fear of the unknown versus the muck of Dwek

JERSEY CITY ? The heavy artillery just started in the mayor?s contest.

It was quiet for a while.

When incumbent Mayor Jerry Healy received the endorsement of President Barack Obama, Team Fulop became especially quiet.

Then the neighborhoods began hearing a lot of the president ? both in ads and on mounted cars ? circulating the kind words for the mayor, again and again. People outside Jersey City began questioning what had happened to Downtown Councilman Steve Fulop, Healy?s most organized and vocal challenger.

If no one actually outright suspected him a casualty of the Obama news, they at least sensed a momentum shift in the campaign and the awakening of Healy.

To hear Fulop tell it, it was indeed very quiet ? but not still - as his team put their heads down and organized through the turbulence of the Obama endorsement.

It looked like Healy planned to ride the Obama support all the way to May 14. No need to go negative, ran the CW; Healy has the president.

Then last week the Healy Team jolted Fulop with a mail piece: ?Steven Fulop has a plan? he just doesn?t want you to know about it.?

There?s an unflattering picture of Fulop that accompanies that intro. When a voter opens the glossy, the siege continues.

?Steven Fulop wants to be your mayor but, as councilman, he used his power and influence to steer contracts to his wealthy donors to make them even wealthier. Steven Fulop?s wealthy friends were given taxpayer funded contracts even though they cost more money and were deemed less qualified. Pay to Play corruption cost you money.? On May 14, say no to the Fulop Plan.?

?Fear. A Swift Boat-style campaign of fear,? said Fulop, seated in his busy campaign headquarters on JFK Boulevard at the headwaters of wards A, B and F.

?Fear of the unknown,? he added. ?That?s what the Healy campaign is putting out there.?

The candidate told his attack dog to retaliate.

So Tommy Bertoli unleashed a mailer the gist of which asks ?Why is Mayor Healy running a negative campaign against Steven Fulop and spreading lies? Because he is desperate to hold onto power and has no record of achievement on failed schools, 2,000 violent crimes in 2012, 16 members of his administration arrested, property taxes are up over 84.?

Then the piece adds, ?But that?s not all.?

Grainy pictures on the bottom third of the mailer show Healy juxtaposed with disgraced developer Solomon Dwek accompanied by block red letters. ?Healy still hasn?t returned bribes he took from Solomon Dwek.?

Fulop followed that up with a TV ad buy this weekend that actually rolls tape on Healy?s encounter with Dwek, contact that resulted in the jailing of Healy?s deputy mayor and the suicide of his political operative.

Campaign volunteers in late afternoon hit the phones and prepared the next round of mail pieces in the bustling HQ, and Fulop told PolitickerNJ.com he is feeling good about the campaign.

So is Bertoli.

They believe they are in a close contest, but they also say they think if they hit their numbers they will win.

?Healy got 16,500 votes in 2009,? said Bertoli. ?The antis got 15,000. The antis had no TV. Between the three of them they had less than $100,000. Healy spent $3 million and that got him 53%.?

But 2009 wasn?t a transformational election.

The challengers were tired, Fulop and Bertoli maintain.

?This is a transformational election, and that means you have to look at DeGise versus Cunningham or Schundler versus Healy,? Bertolli said. ?Those were not 32,000-vote elections. They were 38,000. If we hit 38,000, we win.?

As the ugly mail flies with greater velocity, the fight for the city?s African-American votes likewise continues.

?His campaign is about fear and Obama,? said Fulop.

The challenger has responded by highlighting the early endorsement of U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-10), New Jersey?s only African American congressman, and the support of 50 black leaders citywide.

The soothing tones of the president persist from Healy world.

But given the mail and TV conflagration of the last few days, and the tightness of the race, nothing soothing sounds louder at this point than the salvos from both intensified sides heading toward Election Day.

MightyOz, good point and the answer is no, they just know about Healy's gun stance.

Is there any way for Fulop's team to reach out to the White House to let them know about Healy's affiliation with convicted, corrupt politicians? Perhaps then Obama would reconsider his affiliation/endorsement of Healy.

Former candidate backs Fulop, Lopez in Jersey City race

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
April 08, 2013 at 7:54 PM

A Jersey City developer who last month backed out of the race for the Ward C City Council seat today endorsed mayoral hopeful Councilman Steve Fulop and the re-election campaign of incumbent Ward C Councilwoman Nidia Lopez.

Imtiaz Syed says in a statement from the Fulop campaign that Jersey City is "at a standstill, without any direction ... vision or a mission" under Mayor Jerramiah Healy, who is seeking a third full term.

"After watching the two mayoral debates, I?ve come to the conclusion that the current administration has no agenda or a policy for the future of Jersey City," Syed says in the statement. "We cannot allow the status quo to continue."

The Healy campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Syed, a Muslim who was born in Pakistan of Indian parents, ran unsuccessfully for an at-large council seat in a 2011 special election, and filed petitions to run in the May 14 race, when the mayoralty and all nine council seats are up for grabs. But he dropped out late last month, leaving four candidates vying for Ward C, which encompasses Journal Square.

Syed came in eighth out of 17 candidates in the 2011 election, winning 1,705 votes.

Today's announcement of Syed's endorsement came only a few hours after the Healy campaign announced the endorsement of Raju Patel, president of the Jersey City Asian Merchants Association.

The endorsement is to let all the bull sh*t that goes on that stretch of Newark Ave (little India) to continue. People should be ticketed over there so they stop parking their cars anywhere they want to. But the current administration does not do anything about it.

Healy will let you submit resumes for agencies and boards? Wow. Impressive. Could you tell us exactly how many resumes he's asked you for in the first nine years of his administration? Let me guess: none.

Healy's commitment to the city's Indo-American community? Like the way he supported your niece in her run for the school board?

And you couldn't even get the association you head to endorse this stalwart friend of Indo-Americans?

Hands down: this is the leading candidate for most pathetic endorsement of the year.

Head of Asian merchants group backs Healy in Jersey City mayoral race.

The head of the Jersey City Asian Merchants Association yesterday announced he is supporting Mayor Jerramiah Healy?s bid for re-election, citing Healy?s commitment to the city?s Indo-American community.

The move could help Healy, who is seeking his third full term, with the city?s burgeoning Asian population, which represents about 24 percent of Jersey City, up from 16 percent a decade ago, according to Census figures.

Raju Patel, the association?s president, says in an April 7 letter released by the Healy campaign that Healy has increased Asian-Indian representation in his administration, citing two city firefighters and Deputy Mayor Raj Mukherji.

Healy ?continues to recognize the potential of the community and expects us to provide r?sum?s for representation in different agencies and on boards in Jersey City,? Patel writes.

Healy is facing a challenge from longtime political rival City Councilman Steve Fulop, former local basketball star Jerry Walker and Abdul Malik.

The citywide election is in May 14. The mayoralty and all nine council seats are up for grabs.

Here is where the race Stands IMO.
It will be won in the street on election day.
The HCDO Forces around the county are
starting to think Healy is toast. They will be up to all
the usual dirty tricks. No matter who you are supporting
against Healy you better mount up,this is going to get ugly.

If Fulop is serious about bypassing the Hoboken PATH stop on weekends that's enough to get my vote.

I don't know much about the candidates but Healy looks like a stereotypical sleazy politician.
