Speaking of pay to play. Why has the Fulop campaign accepted a large donation from Assemblyman Troy Singleton's account? Singleton was a large recipient of money from B4K *. If no wheeling, how about the appearance thereof?
*The group which is not for vouchers except when it's for vouchers but there's so much misinformation how could you even think we are for vouchers just because the entire two person operation have both aggressively spoken for vouchers why would you possibly think B4K was for vouchers just because we gave money to tea party backed candidates due to her stance on vouchers who was running against an actual teacher who was against vouchers. And would you like a free backpack and Target giftcard? It's all for the kids, after all. -Head Explodes-

It's not a question of whether the question is "legitimate" in some abstract sense.
It's a question as to whether getting into a flame war on jclist with people campaigning for Fulop is necessary. It isn't.

And these questions asked by Fulop supporters are not legitimate simply because you say so? Sorry - that's ridiculous. There have been many valid and unanswered questions. And Dan comes on here to post press releases from four months ago with no new information for what, exactly?

I think some legitimate criticism of Dan can be made regarding his decision to join the Healy ticket. But not taking the bait from Fulop supporters to rekindle a flame war is different than not responding to legitimate questions.

Great point - ever since Dan joined Healy's ticket you have hardly heard anything from him...HMMMMMM!
{You certainly are unwilling to actually answer the tough and very real questions and you certainly have done nothing to show you are independent. Everything points to you willing to keep your mouth shut ever since you joined the ticket, which is incredibly sad}

Maybe Charles and Annie would be willing to tell us why you are willing to lie about the Pay to Play reform initiatives and allow the City's general Counselor to play the dual role of supposedly equally representing the City Council and the Mayor while running the mayor's re-election campaign? Maybe they can tell us why you are supporting a mayor that does not listen to nor value the very good government groups that you have touted in the past? Maybe they can say why you misrepresented CivicJC's position to the press?
You certainly are unwilling to actually answer the tough and very real questions and you certainly have done nothing to show you are independent. Everything points to you willing to keep your mouth shut ever since you joined the ticket, which is incredibly sad. So you can post that two people still support you, but have you also lied to them about your recent change in positions to support false claims by the mayor just so he can keep taking contractor and developer money? Really? Quote:

Levin is more than any ticket Some friends have asked us if we still support Daniel Levin for the Ward E City Council position, now that he has chosen to run on Mayor Healy?s ticket. The answer is an emphatic yes. In fact, before joining the ticket, Daniel asked our opinion and the opinion of other people who had supported him in the past. We encouraged him to go for it. We?ve known Daniel for many years as an activist in our neighborhood, and we?re confident he will remain an independent, strong voice for good government in Jersey City no matter who wins the mayoral election. In issues such as the Grove Plaza, the Embankment, PAD, and the 9/11 memorial, Daniel has always stood firmly on the side of the people, and he doesn?t give up. We believe he would be an excellent addition to the City Council. Charles and Annie Kessler Jersey City

Dan,
You are posting, but not replying to anything. Why? We know that you are running for council under the Healy ticket. But, you have not answered any questions on why Healy has not addressed many of the issues that have been raised in his 9 years in office. Also, since the mayor wields most of the power, how/why would things change with a new term? It would be good to get your take on how things will change and how you will make these happen.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Daniel Levin 201.364.1730 danlevin@onejerseycity.org onejerseycity.org September 9, 2012 Dan Levin Announces Candidacy for the Ward E Council Seat in the May 2013 Municipal Election Jersey City, NJ ? Longtime good government advocate and community leader, Dan Levin announced today that he is a candidate for the Ward E Council position in the upcoming May 2013 municipal election. Levin said, "I bring a passion and belief that I can help make Jersey City a safer, more vibrant city, work to stabilize taxes with sensible spending, and advance common sense sound solutions for Ward E, and for Jersey City." For close to 15 years, Levin has worked with and through community groups on crime, parks and open space, development, planning, transportation, arts, entertainment, pedestrian safety, flooding and historic preservation issues. Under his leadership as neighborhood association president, the Harsimus Cove Association spearheaded the design of the hugely successful and heavily used multi-functional plaza at the Grove Street Path Station. As founder and president of Civic JC, Levin was the primary driver behind Jersey City's tough pay-to-play reform laws. It is this vision, knowledge, skills and experience that he will bring to the city council. Levin added, "I am committed on working to expand Jersey City's pay-to-play reform laws to cover the Board of Education, to implement NJ's Open Appointments requirements that will provide residents with greater opportunities to serve and have a voice in our city government, and to adopt locally the state?s strict ethics code, which will reduce conflicts of interest." Levin said on the city budget process: "I am committed to aligning resources with results and prioritizing services to optimize efficient government spending through outcome budgeting, for a more strategic, transparent budget process." Well known throughout Jersey City, he helped found the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, Civic JC, and Bike JC, leading non-profit advocacy organizations in the city. Born in Newark and raised in South Orange, Levin has resided in Jersey City for 16 years. He and his wife Leonila Paunil have two children, both born in Jersey City and currently attend MS 4 Frank Conwell Middle School and PS 37 Cordero School, respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Lehigh University. -END-

since it is the beginning of the year, you cannot avoid reading advice columns and their learned suggestions how to improve your life. and, in a way the "reformed" mayor healy wants to change our city to the better. he wants to improve the quality of our life through 44 action points. hence, he has completed the first step by identifying the large goals that he wants the city to achieve. then, as a next step he and his team should break these down into more manageable and smaller goals. and finally, he and his team should act on it.
let me ask the embarrassingly obvious: why hasn't our incumbent mayor tackled any of these issues during his three terms (9 years)? thanks for posting, dan. Quote:

This should be discussed. This is an important topic. There should be a dialogue on this thread. Not just posts of a wishlist.
My reply: Dan - Both are about contracting pay-to-play and neither "reaches into campaign finance reform". You either are misinformed or wish to misinform the public which is very sad and at this point shows that you are now just a shill for the Healy team. The passed ordinance does three main things: (1) expands the definition of political action committee or PAC to prevent candidates from setting up dummy or sham PACs for the sole purpose of being able to accept contributions from contractors that the candidates cannot accept under P2P; (2) prohibits the practice of contractors donating to a state assembly or senate candidate or board of ed candidate who then transfers or wheels the contribution back to local candidate in an effort to avoid P2P; and (3) lowers the contribution limit from $300 to $200. Contractors and local politicians are constantly finding new ways to circumvent P2P. The passed ordinance takes direct aim at some of the methods already being used in other counties (like Middlsex for example) to prevent them so they can't be implemented here in Hudson County. The tabled ordinance does little to really attack P2P violations. It does include bidded contracts. However the whole point of P2P is to stop the quid-pro-quo when contractors who make contributions are hand-picked for unbidded contracts regardless of qualifications to reward them for the politican contribution. The bidding process by law means sealed bids are submitted and only the lowest bidder gets the contract, regardless of whether he has made political contributions. The tabled ordinance also does little to addresses the practice of wheeling involving state senate and assembly candidates. It states that if a contractor is involved in wheeling, the contractor will only be penalized if it can be proven in a court of law that the contractor intended to violate P2P when he made the contribution. Proven someone's intention is virtually impossible unless you have a bidden wire. The tabled ordinance is pretty much unenforceable. It has no teeth. The tabled ordinance also does not do anything to stop contractors from donating to a sham PAC set up by a candidate to accept contributions and engage in electioneering, in an effort to side-step P2P restrictions. Your unwillingness to admit that the passed ordinance is the right ordinance for any good government organization or activist to pass (all three good government groups agree) shows that if "Dan is still Dan" that you never stood for anything concrete. The rest of us activists will continue to push for stricter legislation any chance we get. Good luck working with the Healy team.

I'm going to post here Dan's comments and my response to his post on the JCI site regarding P2P reform. I think this is important because while he doesn't respond here, he certainly gives his opinion on another site and I would like to address the misinformation and inaccuracies that he perpetuates so the viewers here can decide what Dan really stands for.
Sorry, but purposely misleading people is really not ok, especially when you have a lot of activists supporting these efforts you seek to undermine. Dan's comments: one ordinance is NOT tougher or stronger than the other, they are different. the tabled ordinance is about contracting pay-to-play and the passed ordinance reaches into campaign finance reform. the passed ordinance includes state senate and assembly candidates committees. the tabled ordinance added bid contracts (current ordinance only covers no bid contracts) and would have taken effect after the municipal election. the tabled ordinance was based on recommendations from Citizen's Campaign and Civic JC. what may be missed is that the mayor and parts of the council were willing to support Citizens Campaign and Civic JC's recommendations. Civic JC appears that they ultimately decided to support the passed ordinance. The tabled ordinance would have expanded and tightened contracting pay-to-play reform. The passed ordinance is an exercise in power (and a fishing expedition).

If these objectives have not been accomplished in the past 8 years under Mayor Healey, why should we expect them to happen in the next four? Dan may mean well, but he's just a single vote on the council. The mayor sets the agenda and the tone of our government. Do we really want years 9,10,11 and 12?

Supporting someone for the council who has been wrong on certain issues, or aligned with the wrong people in the past, is very different from supporting our incumbent mayor.
The mayor's office is where the power lies and we know what Healey has done with that power: Very little for the people of Jersey City. We have no reason to believe that a fourth term will be any different from the first three. The best that Dan can hope for is that he will be a thorn in Healey's side. A council member is a single vote out of 9 who are there to play an "advise and consent" role to the mayor. The worst that might happen is that Sean will disagree with Steve on a particular issue, but running on the mayor's ticket is an implicit promise to back the mayor's key initiatives. If he reneges on that promise, he will be marginalized and ultimately replaced. A council member's other main responsibility is to understand the needs of his Ward and to ensure those needs are addressed. Ties to the community are essential. Like Candace, Sean has the potential to be highly effective in this aspect of the job. I can see that the machine intends to muddy the waters by playing false equivalency cards. What else can the do but make voters think that Steve is just as bad as they are? They have nothing positive to run on. Fortunately, the people of Jersey City will not be so easily fooled.

Dan is still Dan... and that's the problem. Dan is a good guy with good ideas, but weak on being able to get them done. How many of these great ideas has Mayor Healy championed since Dan has joined Team Healy?
Dan's got an even bigger problem. Steve is still Steve. Even Dan's supporters' imaginative distortions of history can't hide Steve Fulop's record of accomplishment. And how has Steve done this? By doing something Dan has been unable to do - building a team and winning over former opponents. The 8-1 against votes of Fulop's first Council term have turned into 5-4 winning votes. Now, instead of being voted down by Team Healy, Steve's reform proposals have to be vetoed by an increasingly isolated Jerramiah Healy. Joining a ticket is not only a political judgment, it is a statement to the voters about who you stand with. Supporting a stumbling, crumbling, patronage-as-usual Mayor is a clear statement that you don't get what Jersey City needs and how to move us forward.

If you are going to go so far as resort to "facts", Jim - please bring the truth. Fulop introduced the JCIA/DPW merger ordinance and fought hard against it being tabled. Call the clerk and ask for the transcript from the meeting. As for Chico - he has a job. If elected, he will quit that job - he's on public record as having said so. I realize the ward B council race, and the last one, are personal to you and maybe that is clouding your objectivity but it would be helpful if you stick to "facts" as they actually occurred and not as you'd like them to be.

Sorry, you don't get your own facts. O'Dea stood up at the meeting and told them how to table it, before public comments were closed, so only the person who tabled it could bring it back. As it was said, it was done. Steve wouldn't cross O'Dea because he needs him, see Chico on his ticket now. It was just another one of Jersey City's stinky political deals. No Change.

Dan, I've got a new platform slogan for you and Team Healy...
MORE: more corruption, more kickbacks, more cronyism. I mean, we in JC have been living with corruption for at least the better part of the last 100 years, dont we deserve more of it?
