I couldn't get salt at Home Depot. Anyone else find salt for sidewalks?

Hudson Mall Closed Temporarily Due to Damage Sustained by Hurricane Sandy
Hudson Mall will be closed temporarily due to flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy. The mall has been closed since Monday, October 29, when the rising water from the Hackensack River reached an unprecedented level and flooded the entire Hudson Mall site along with other sites in the area. The flooding caused significant water damage to the mall as well as to all of its stores.
The overflow receded early Tuesday, and emergency clean-up efforts at the mall will commence today. However, because of extensive power outages in the Greater Jersey City area, it is anticipated that it may take many days before electricity is restored. This is expected to impede the mall?s ability to open.

It is expected to take at least two weeks before the mall will be in a condition to reopen, although it could take longer. Additionally, all of the mall?s 48 stores are commencing with their own clean-up efforts. The situation is being monitored on a continual basis, and daily updates will be featured here on the mall website.

BREAKING NEWS: Serious illness reported to the NJ Poison Experts from using charcoal grills indoors to cook with or heat homes.

(Newark, NJ) ? November 5, 2012 ?Experts at the NJ Poison Center are warning residents against the use of charcoal grills in the home. Over the weekend, two (2) people were admitted to a NJ hospital after using a charcoal grill in the house for the purpose of either cooking with it or using it to heat their home. Both were suffering from significant carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. One resident was barely responsive when emergency services arrived; both adults required the use of hyperbaric oxygen.

According to Bruce Ruck, Pharm.D., Director of Drug Information and Professional Education of the NJ Poison Center, these were not the only two (2) NJ residents that have required medical attention due to carbon monoxide poisoning from using gas generators or charcoal grills indoors or too close to the home since Hurricane Sandy touched down in the state last Monday. Dr. Ruck also reminds residents not to use gas powered generators in the home, garage or near an open window. The NJ Poison Experts have received several similar calls over the past week from around the state.

Portable gas powered generators flew off of the shelves over the past few days. Many new generator owners may not realize the potential dangers of the incorrect use of these units. These units produce high concentrations of carbon monoxide and if not properly placed or installed can cause carbon monoxide buildup and tragedy.

? Do not bring portable gas powered generators into the home or garage!

? Do not place portable gas powered generators outside near any open windows.

Portable heaters, stoves and lighting made for camping burn fuel and produce carbon monoxide:

? Do not use propane stoves or lights, kerosene camping stoves or charcoal grills into the house or garage

? Never cook with charcoal indoors.


If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, take immediate action:

? Exit the house/building immediately. Do not waste time opening windows to ?air? it out; this will delay your escape and cause you to breathe in more possibly dangerous fumes.

? Contact your local fire department or gas company.

? Call the NJ Poison Experts, 800-222-1222, for immediate treatment advice. DO not waste time looking for information on the internet about carbon monoxide poisoning. Call us for fast, free and accurate information.



Safe Use/Storage of Gasoline

? Do not siphon gas from one place to another:

o Swallowing gas and getting it into your lungs can cause significant injury.

? Do not store extra cans or jugs of gas in the home and only use approved gas containers:

o In addition to being a fire hazard, gas fumes can cause someone to develop nausea vomiting and headaches.



Loss of Power to Refrigerator/Freezer

With the potential threat of power outages, it is important to be careful about food stored in refrigerators and freezers.

? Fill freezers to capacity, but refrigerators need room for air to circulate

? Refrigerators/freezers will sustain proper temperatures if not opened. Plan opening of either for as few times and as short a period of time as possible.

Manila, Phililppines - Filipino youth organizations in New Jersey under the banner of Anakbayan NJ has stepped up their post-Sandy relief efforts the working people and immigrant communities affected by super storm Sandy last week.
Reports reaching All Voices revealed that Anakbayan NJ has likewise asked the city government of this east coast city to prioritize the mobilization of volunteer based emergency disaster response teams to address the urgent needs of affected people, including immigrant communities.
After the storm, members of Anakbayan New Jersey conducted a preliminary assessment of the effects of hurricane Sandy and the immediate needs of the Filipino Jersey City community.
"Working class and immigrant communities are literally and figuratively left in the dark due to power outage and lack of information dissemination from the city government," Anakbayan NJ said.
Based on the assessment that Anakbayan NJ made, the major concern among the community is the extended power outage and its effects on the people?s livelihood.

Anakbayan NJ chairperson Bea Sabino noted that majority of the city has been out of power since Monday.
In a predominantly immigrant and working class community such as Jersey City, not being able to work for an extended period of time means no food on their families? plates, delayed bill payments and unstable living conditions,? Sabino maintained.
Also based on the assessment, most Jersey City residents are frustrated by the City of Jersey City?s inefficient methods of disseminating information. Dissemination of updates about resources available to the community have been limited to an unstaffed City Hall and inaudible police patrol car announcements.
This, according to the youth organization, left the community relying mostly on word-of-mouth for information.

?There are shelters, food and water distribution services available in certain locations across the city. However, the communities who are in dire need of these services are neither receiving this information nor can access it due to the ineffective communication systems between local city government and residents,? Ms. Sabino added.

Government neglect
The Anakbayan NJ leader said concerned citizens and community leaders are leading to an effort to unite the diverse neighborhoods of Jersey City to voice out these clear cases of government neglect of working class and immigrant communities.
?We call on Mayor Healy, and the local Jersey City government to not leave our communities in the dark. We demand immediate government assistance for the residents of Greenville, Bergen-Lafayette, West Side and Journal Square.
We also demand to immediately address the long power outage in our neighborhoods and lastly, to improve information dissemination regarding updates on what the city is doing by working closely with grassroots organizations,? Sabino said.

The Anakbayan NJ, in collaboration with local community organizations will be conducting more surveys and will be distributing information sheets for relief and assistance in Jersey City.
Anakbayan NJ had also appealed for volunteers for survey teams.

Looks like Port Libertre complex took the worst of it. The Pointe Restaurant is reported to be completely destroyed.

Priority 2 - people to take gas cans and stand in line for gas to bring gas to generators on Grand, Sussex, York and Bright streets

I think you're a West Sider, like me. The NJT 119 bus from Bayonne to PABT along JFK is running their normal schedule, but be advised that "normal" means that there are no buses between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You can catch it at rush hours and the last bus out of NY is around 10 p.m.

The 87 and 80 buses are running from Gates Avenue to JSQ. If you can get there, the 125 at gate C4 also runs to PABT, or you can catch any of the commuter vans for $3 a ride. They're at gate B2 and they run pretty frequently until 1 a.m. and you can pick them up at gate 51 at PABT.

Call 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397) to register.

The New Jersey Office of Volunteerism and AmeriCorps will match volunteers based on availability and skills, according to a statement by NJ officials.

If storm conditions prevent live operators from working the phones, volunteers can call 609-775-5236 or 908-303-0471 instead. Volunteers may also send an email to rowena.madden@sos.state.nj.us.

I have family members in Europe, north of the border and across the globe who are only getting election media from the US, not information on what happened with Hurricane Sandy at all. We're talking provinces just north of Buffalo not aware of details.

Does anyone know if the gas stations approaching the Holland tunnel or exiting the tunnel are up as yet?

Block to block are on different branches of the grid. Yes, sometimes I have power and the next block does not. Just because you are near someone who has power doesn't mean that you will too. I realize this stinks but that's how power - especially on a 100+ year old system - works. Rumor has it that if your branch includes a police/fire station you will likely be put online sooner so that emergencies can be dealt with effectively. If your branch is an easy fix and the block down is more complicated, there could be a significant time difference. Transformers were submerged, remember.

Power back up today on grove street and york also on 4th and monmouth. Still in shock from floor to ceiling water that was in my condo monday night and all the damage it caused. Grove Street was an f'ing river.

That being said - I have two portable sump pumps if anyone is in need and some extension chords (which were under water, but not sure if they are working).

My side the starting point of heights just past State Hwy 139, the power came on just 5 mins after 9 tonight.
