Thank God that disgusting place is gone! I ordered a few times in the beginning but things got bad fast! Maybe the flood waters cleaned the joint. A new Brazilian market is opening in its place. Te owner is spending a lot of $$ to fix it up. Many don't know but the space has a tremendous backyard

yes, that space got flooded. i don't understand why people would take risk in locating in such a flood prone place

Did that storefront get flooded in Sandy? They're at least 1/2 below street level. Hope the new business moving in has taken precautions. It stinks to see someone busting their a$$ to open something only to have it all destroyed when mother nature goes crazy on us.

The old Ducky's spot is definitely taking on a new life. The exterior is now painted jet black, and the windows are still papered over as they have been for a few months.

What do you think would be a good business for that space? Kind of small for a sitdown restaurant or a bar, no?

Confession: I'm addicted to the Ling Ling chicken & veg potstickers that are available at both BJ's and Shoprite. About 12 minutes from freezer to plate using the one pot simmer/fry method. Yum. They even come with sauce.

When I lived in Tribeca I shopped the chinatown dumplings, but as I don't commute, I just don't get there much anymore.

User and 07310 - thanks - I'll check these places out. It's good to have backup in case the board of health closes your current fave. Another great place - this one for baked pork buns is Mei Li Wah at 64 Bayard. 45 seconds in the nuke and you have the breakfast of (Chinese) champions.

Slightly off topic, but dumpling related - now that the weather has gotten cold its easy to make a dumpling run to Chinatown. I buy bags of frozen pot stickers at 106 Mosco Street and bags of frozen shrimp dumplings at Tasty Dumpling - 54 Mulberry. Both are very inexpensive. The shrimp ones need to be boiled for about 11-12 minutes, the pot stickers are more complicated but still very easy. These places may not be the best, but they are the closest I've found to the WTC PATH station. I sleep easier knowing I have dumplings in my freezer - LOL.

The best dumplings are located at Eldridge and Broom, the store is not marked, but it was voted the smelliest block in NYC(no one knows where the smell is coming from).... No one in the store speaks English, they only know two words dumpling, and Pork. BTW not many Americans ever really step foot in the place, but its packed with Chinese folks. I think a bag of 20 dumplings are like 2 bucks but no more than 3.

I usually go to the deluxe Food Market 74 Elizabeth St. for frozen dumplings they have many varieties to choose and are very reasonable.
I also find the prepared foods irresistible I always get the sticky rice and the roast pork or seafood.

I am usually sad to see good businesses close but in this case I am not. Crap food, dirty place and screaming employees and of course Baby Dumpling. I will miss stopping her run up and down Grove Street while no one inside noticed her missing. fact!!!
On the other hand folks in this town should understand because food is cheap that doesn't mean it's good, just sayin...

I was always more concerned with the baby crawling around the filthy floor, and then the mother or father picking up the baby, and then start rolling dumplings with same hands. But I guess different things gross different people out...

sure, why not.

the food never made me sick, and i never saw anything to indicate the food product itself was tainted, or that the preparation and prep space was unsanitary.

More like "everything else" appeared to be unorganized and dirty. typically in a restaurant with limited manpower, things that get used regularly are taken care of and cleaned by necessity, and things that are not sit and collect dust/dirt/grime, etc. Especially in a small smokey place with lots cooking oil flying around in woks and whatnot.

It's a shame, Bar Majestic easily had the coolest vibe in all of JC - it actually had a ton of character, especially the front half of the interior. It had the feel of a wine bar in the Village or something. Not nearly enough places in JC like that...

Agreed. Majestic was a good time, at least when there were fun bartenders in there.

I thought I read that Majestic was supposed to reopen with a gourmet Peruvian menu - ceviche, etc.

What is M.A.E.?

I guess I don't understand all the grumpiness about the restaurants downtown.

It makes me wonder why restaurants keep closing in this town, so far the only restaurant with an original idea is M.A.E. every thing else is the same bullsh*t! I will keep eating in NYC and Bayonne.

Look at post #1 (by yours truly) and post #6 ... I guess we all knew this place was going to be strange from the very start. Oh well, it was a decent place to grab a quick snack, in fact sometimes I craved it, but it was kind of gross in there. I always feel bad when businesses close, especially restaurants. Actually there have been quite a few that closed recently - Ducky's, Parkside Bistro, Embankment, Village Thai, and Majestic (will it re-open?).

I did like the food... and the entertainment while you waited. What a wacky place. Have to assume padlocked due to health code violations. Nothing in there looked particularly sanitary.

Will miss if gone, always an adventure stepping through those doors.
