I used to live on 8th near Hamilton Park, quite a way from the river, but the noise of helicopters was something I recall bitching about whenever I had a few in me. Just couldn't hear the damn Mets game.
I moved out of JC in 2008, and recently moved back, now living by Van Vorst Park, and I never hear any helicopters, so just that bit of distance did wonders. I'll bitch about it, but surely banning them would ruin some of the businesses. Welcome to the city, you whiny bastards!

Hudson County should be trying to encourage as many tourist as possible to visit, and helicopters don't hurt imo.

Helicopter lands in NYC's Hudson River; all safe
NEW YORK ? New York authorities say a helicopter has gone down in the Hudson River off Manhattan, but all five occupants are accounted for. The New York Police Department says the pilot and four passengers have been rescued and taken to shore. The incident happened shortly before noon Sunday in the section of the river near 79th Street. The circumstances were unclear. In January, a small plane crashed and sank into the icy Hudson River off Yonkers. Two people were rescued. In 2009, a US Airways flight landed safely on the Hudson after striking a flock of geese. All 155 people aboard survived.

Yes, we could see that the new Kerney Heliport was in full swing today - as we were driving by -- after getting off the Turnpike at exit 15E.

Countless Helicopters flying in Jersey City lately

Hi there,
Has anyone else noticed the massive amounts of helicopters flying in the area lately? Is there a reason for this? Maybe an event we're not aware of? They even fly at very odd hours and very close to houses. Like yesterday, one flew past 12midnight. Now that's not right. We don't even get planes flying that late or that close to our houses and we're only a few miles from the airport. **confused** Any explanation to clear the confusion will be much appreciated.

And as far as the routes changing in 2010, I'll say again that it really wasn't a change in the way helicopters have always operated on the river. Southbound traffic has always hugged the jersey side.

Yes, it has increased over the last few years because it decreased significantly during the recession. It still hasn't returned to previous levels.
Helicopters noise has been complained about for years. The ERHC takes it seriously and works with local groups to an extent. But they are not a regulatory agency, local operators don't have to follow their recommendations. What is the solution? Short of banning helicopters (not going to happen) you try to keep them out over the water and at altitude. Only so much you can do in that regard.

aah - someone else on jclist shares my woes and has been posting to the Kearny helipad issue lately - http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... id=293367#forumpost293367
i have been here 9 years and helicopter traffic over the hudson has only become worse over the last few years. If you read this memo from NYC's EDC, the routes were changed in 2010 in response to noise complaints from NYC residents. http://www.nycedc.com/press-release/n ... -new-york-city-helicopter Of course Jersey suffers. When I spoke to the Chairman of the ERHC (who surprisingly picked up his cellphone listed on their website), he also told me that the Colgate helipad was being opened this year and that would really bring the noise closer. Their needs to be a solution.

Yes because all those rich people are taking all those tours up and down the river. Rich people have their own helicopters!

I agree. The helicopters are awful. Convenience for the rich/Noise pollution for the 99%.

Just to clear up some points, helicopter traffic has always flown on the west side of the river when travelling south and on the east side when travelling north. It's done to maintain separation, just like on a road. The third bullet point in the referenced plan does require any tour helicopters to maintain a path along the center of the river, so I suppose that would bring those helicopters a little closer, but it's the southbound ones that create the noise, as they are much closer.
There is not much to be done about the airspace. The only reason NYC had any control was because they control the helipads not the airspace. Helicopters have in fact been flying down the Hudson river, right along the Jersey side, for many many years. Complaining about it is kind of like moving in next to an airport and then complaining about airplane noise.

I almost fell off of my seat laughing. A warzone? Really, nuyorkster? I'm amazed you haven't complained about the B-17 flying up and down the river. I really don't know how to answer your "how do they expect us to live question? Have they taken away some sort of inalienable human or civil right? Has your home been taken away? Have they taken away all your food and clothes or your ability to obtain the same? Is it really that much more noise than the bustling city you live in with a quarter million people, car horns, loud music playing and sirens? And your "read point number three". Really. It's called maintaining airspace. OMG it's alittle closer to us than the center line. Last I check, the helicopters were flying over the river and not your house. Maybe you forget that we live next to one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world. Don't expect the serenity of the countryside if you can't hack living in a city. (And really, NU-yorker? Is that like NU metal less the umlaut?) And yes I'm being snarky, but I really don't care for once.

How do they expect us to live here along the Hudson waterfront with helicopters flying over the river ALL day long. They are noisy as hell and almost feels like we are living in a war zone. Is this fair to us in Jersey? NYC did this deliberately to eliminate noise over the city and here is the proof http://www.nysaenet.org/resources1/in ... 0/inview052010_article11/
Read point number three, specifically where it says "returning south center-west of the Hudson" - that's closer to NJ than to NY. Its just maddening... Is there anything we can do except move?
