Lincoln Park fountain will undergo $3.9 million renovation By The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal on June 09, 2012 at 12:00 PM Hudson County freeholders approved a $3.9 million plan to renovate the crumbling fountain at the Lincoln Park circle in Jersey City. Up to $1.95 million of that money could come from a $1.95 million Green Acres federal grant for the fountain, which was built in 1911. The 108-foot diameter fountain features a 53-foot tall column at it's center and concrete pedestals with sculpted frogs shooting water. Does anyone know why the large fountain at the entrance to Lincoln Park has been water-less for so many summer seasons? Just wondering.

I don't understand why every government project has to cost so much money. $30 million to build two ugly concrete and steel walls in Liberty State? $16 million to re-do the fountain in Washington Square Park in Manhattan? Something like $600 million to re-do the intersection at 1&9? At least the $4 million to restore the Lincoln Park fountain is miniscule in comparison to those, but holy crap! The things I could do with $4 million!
I'm alright with things like fixing up fountains. Love that the pier at Exchange Place was fixed up. Would love to see our parks and public spaces be renovated. Just not sure of the cost of it.

if the park can get 3.9 million spread it around, don't waste it on cosmetically improving the fountain.
The fountain is 100 years old, the 3.9 mm seems like a quote for a full (historically correct) rehab. JC does not have the money to waste on such a specific project. If there is a great demand to restore the fountain, get private money to do it.

this burns me up
our playgrounds and parks in the heights are deteriorating that fountain does not seem like a priority and thats a whole lot of money to spend on it too

actually i was joking. i agree that there are better ways to spend the money, but if one lets things like public parks deteriorate then the whole community will start to suffer....it's a slippery slope?

Hudson actually has a ton of bonds out there - ranging from general purpose to recreation... again - they are a reasonable tax free investment... especially if you want to recoup some of your taxes. Quote:

This is a county project, to restore a county fountain, in a county park! Paid for and bonded by the Hudson County, not Jersey City.

Ugh - everyone step back for a moment and read the article again...
The funding used to fix the fountain is coming from 'capital bonds' and a possible grant. This is exactly what capital bonds are supposed to be used for... to create and restore capital assets. It also means your taxes dollars are not being used for a bulk of the project - investors who believe in the City's credit rating and have invested in our bonds are paying for it. At a very general level, you are only paying for roughly 10% of the total cost of a capital project (based on a 10yr bond) - which is a steal based on what gets done. We as tax payers for this city are already paying the interest on this bond - as the general improvements bond matures in 2018 and was issued in 2009... (my gamble where the bond funds are being sourced.) Just for everyone's general knowledge - Jersey City has three primary bonds: - General Capital Improvement (476576AJ2) - Primary & Secondary Education (4765757A7) - Qualified General Improvement (Utilities - I believe) (4765757R0) If you would like some of your tax dollars back (and keep in mind these are tax free investments as well) you can use the CUSIPs above to buy our city bond from your broker. The things mentioned above have nothing to (for the most part) do with bond funding - those are general operating cost. If you are dissatisfied with use of those funds let your council person and the mayor know.

Good point! Also, that is not just a JC problem. In Bayonne for the last 3 years the lines have not been painted on several stretches of roads....especially Kennedy Blvd and Ave C.
Anytime now there will be an accident(hope not) and then the city will be sued.

I wonder what other projects were on the short list to get the funding? If the city has 3.9 million dollars sitting around why didn't they repaint the lines on all the roads, they are all worn to invisibility.

This money should be spent on job training programs, or scholarship money for college students.....or given to non profits that work in the community especially given how bad the economy is and the large cuts in services that have taken place.
I think that fountain is beautiful but right now it should not be a priority. Also, I am sure their are federal grant programs that could assist in fixing that fountain without cost to the city or county. All the money should be found/gathered that way. Such a waste.

Hudson County freeholders approve spending $3.9M on restoring Lincoln Park?s 100-year-old fountain
June 09, 2012, 3:00 AM By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal Some $3.9 million will be spent to completely restore the century-old ornamental fountain in Jersey?s City?s Lincoln Park. The Hudson County Board of Freeholders recently approved the funds for the project, which will completely restore the cracking and crumbling sculpture, Hudson County spokesman Jim Kennelly said. The county will use funds from its capital bonds to pay for the project, Freeholder Bill O?Dea said. The county has also applied for federal Green Acres funding, which could cover as much as $1.95 million of the cost. Built in 1911, the fountain was designed by Pierre J. Cheron features an eagle perched atop a 53-foot column with a large bowl above sculptures of mythological creatures at its base. Concrete frogs on pedestals spout water into the 108-foot-diameter pool that is ringed with planters. Design and engineering consultant Helena Roman is in charge of the project that will use laser technology to map the fountain?s ornaments in order to recast the fountain in new concrete. The current fountain is roughly a foot deep, but was originally several feet deeper, officials said. A new bottom was created over debris that had accumulated over the years, Kennelly said.
