Gypsy Girl on Newark Ave near Jersey Ave. has the best hummus I've ever eaten. Seriously good hummus ~ and I've eaten it all ver the planet.

Homemade is really easy and cheap, i figure less than a buck a batch. As long as you have a food processor of course!. I make my own tahini as follows:
1. Brown a couple of tablespoons of sesame seeds. I buy them in bulk in the City or in the large containers at Twin City. 2. Blend with garlic cloves and a bit of olive oil. Add salt to taste if you really need it. Thats it! Now you can buy bags of uncooked chickpeas, or canned precooked ones, blend in your homemade tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and some of the water from the chickpeas and you are good to go. I like to add hot pepper flakes and i really like the idea of trying an avocado! I try to use less oil and more water and you can experiment to your taste. But never, never any oil but olive!

Crisp has actually opened a location in the food court at the mall in Newport. By far the best hummus in JC. It's not apparent when you walk up but they do sell the hummus by itself. And five packs of just the falafel. But all their food is YUM.
Seriously. The BEST hummus. Hope you enjoy!

I made hummus today with my last bit of tahini. For some really creamy hummus, i added avocado to it and for a bit more kick a whole jalepeno.
I can't wait to have it for breakfast with whole wheat toast and boiled egg. :)

Have not been to Amelia's in a while but instead of bread they would bring out a mortar and pestal with chick peas, olive oil and garlic and you mashed your own hummus -- its the best!

For store-bought, I like "The Tribe" brand. It is MUCH better than Sabra. The Roasted Pepper is especially good.

Haven't tried Rumi yet, will add that to the list.

Thanks everyone!
I ended up getting Gypsy Grill hummus, it was very good. Of course it couldn't compete with the hummus I used to get in Bay Ridge Brooklyn at the Middle Eastern shops. I guess I got spoiled living there! Also, I stopped into Ibby's and felt the amount of hummus they were going to sell me for $5 was ridiculous! (again probably spoiled from living in BR) I can't wait to try Rumi's :)

Do you really feel that restaurant hummus is better than the Sabra or other brands in the market? I've never noticed much difference except the addins you can get like roasted garlic (yumm) Now, babaganush is a different story, I feel there should be no hummus or mayo in baba, unlike most commercial stuff. Best baba is homemade.
BTW: Don't bring humus, unless it's a garden party!

I have not tried Gypsy Grill though I keep saying I'm going to.
Between Ibby's and Rumi Turkish Grill, I think Ibby's falafel is better but Rumi's hummus is the winner in that matchup. (Two Aprons is pretty good too but I stopped going there after one-too-many times of not being able to buy a chicken because he was saving them for more regular customers.) My favorite hummus and falafel though come from Crisp in the city. I hit that place up for lunch a couple times a week.
