Okay, so I'm old school with Chinese parents, we always went to Jing Fong on Elizabeth or Golden Unicorn. Both are what I dub as the Hong Kong mobster style --- j/k --- they're just huge and the places where wedding receptions are held.
Now that I've lived in NYC 20 years, my new finds are: 1. Oriental Garden - they really are excellent, even if they the name is cheesy; and 2. Shanghai Asian Cuisine - okay so this is technically Shanghainese food - they are so way better than Joe's - so get the juicy dumplings AND their noodles, which is what Shanghai food is famous for. Enjoy!

Hmmm, I'll have to revisit Big Wong and give it another try. I haven't been there since the mid-1990s, mainly because I thought they dumped too much MSG in their food. After the last couple of visits, my siblings and I came out of there so thirsty, we were ready to each down a 2-liter of soda. Who knows, they may have improved - I'm certainly impressed that they're still around after all these years!

At Big Wong, they are called 'fried crullers'. You can get them fresh in the morning with your congee.

"If it's what I think it is, "fried grease sticks" is the literal translation of the name from Taiwanese ("youtiao") - kind of resembles a churro, right?"
Big Wong's has those sticks. Yummy!

Yep...you tiao and also sao bing. I know, it's Taiwanese and of course C-town is mostly Cantonese, but still! You can buy the stuff at the grocery stores over there! I like Flushing bc they do have more Taiwanese stuff (my family is from Taiwan). But it's too much of a pain in the ass to get there and my husband is not one to like hot curdled soy bean milk (why not I ask?) and stinky tofu so there's not much motivation for me to drag him all the way over to get some.
But back to the topic about c-town...Shanghai Cafe and Congee Village FTW! Wo Hop? Come on, wtf?

Alas, they'll be hard to find in Chinatown, because the establishments there tend to be Cantonese - though nowadays you'll see more and more Vietnamese joints.

I haven't been to flushing in years! Ugh! I used to go to this awesome place to get salty soybean milk and fried grease sticks (as we called it in English). yumyumyum! Not sure why i cant find a good place for that in ctown. Oh well. Can mak it at home I guess....

Big Wong & Shanghai cafe were my other choices. After Reading up on Wo Hop I think I'll give it a shot.

Hoy Wong has been closed by the Health Department.
For Cantonese food, the following are good: Yee Li, 60 Bayard St (1 Elizabeth St) Congee Village, 100 Allen St Congee, 98 Bowery Amazing 66, 66 Mott St Lately, we have just been going to Yee Li. There are more. Basically, go where there are a lot of Chinese people eating. Suggestions: 1.Chinese food are usually served family style. 2.Go with many people and order different dishes to share. 3.Do not everybody order the same thing unless it is a rice plate or a one serving bowl or plate of noodles. 4.If it is not a rice plate, or a plate of noodles, do not eat off of the dish.

I have two go to places: shanghai cafe and congee village. There used to be a hot pot place I lved but sadly it closed down years ago. Sigh.
Anyway, both places are authentic Chinese IMO.

The 24-hour gem that is Wo Hop is always solid. They have a lot of Americanized food, but also a very decent assortment of the traditional stuff. NY Mag Review Just make sure you go to the downstairs location, not the street-level location.
Also, if you'd like to try the best roasted duck and chicken in the city, Hoy Wong on Mott at Canal is the place. Hoy Wong

Trying to find a good Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown, NYC. Not really looking for a Dim Sum place, but rather some authentic Chinese food.
I know of Hop Kee featured on Anthony Bourdain's no reservations, the yelp reviews on this place is pretty brutal. All suggestions are appreciated.
