My girlfriend lives in Astoria, Queens, and has a fairly timid cat who reacts to a lot of outside noises and tremors.

The morning of the quake day, this cat was unusually clingy, following her right to the apartment door as she headed out for work, something the cat had never done before.

Could be nothing, but ...

Curious if anyone here works/volunteers at Liberty Humane. Read a few stories and heard from a few people about animals acting funny before the quake. Was wondering if they noticed any unusual behavior from the dogs/cats.

Earthquake is one of Jersey's biggest jolts since 1783, but expert at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City says it's only natural that some didn't feel a thing Published: Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 3:00 AM By Toni-Ann Cerbo/The Jersey Journal Yesterday?s 5.8-magnitude earthquake was a ?big deal? for the East Coast, and the largest quake felt in New Jersey in 228 years, experts said yesterday. An earthquake with a magnitude higher than 2.0 can be felt, while a tremor greater than 4.0 can cause damage, according to Kate Soriano, an earth science expert at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. "It was a big deal,? she said. Reports that occupants of tall buildings in Jersey City could feel shaking, while pedestrians on the street could not, is typical, Soriano said. ?Depending on where you are and where the earthquake occurs determines how you?re going to feel it,? she said. ?Someone in a moving car may have missed the whole thing.? Earthquakes occur when tectonic plates that make up the Earth?s skin slip and shift along one other, unleashing energy in a seismic wave. Soriano compared it to bending a stick that curves the more energy you place on it. Too much energy, she said, and the stick snaps. Montclair State University geoscience professor Matthew Gorring, who was on the third floor of a university building when the earthquake struck, said yesterday?s was one of the biggest earthquakes felt by New Jerseyans since 1783. ?The magnitude of this earthquake was rare,? Gorring told The Jersey Journal. In 2003, a 3.5-magnitude quake shook Hunterdon County and a 3.0-magnitude tremor occurred in Morris County, according to Gorring. Yesterday?s quake ?may not be newsworthy for residents living on the San Andreas Fault, (but) it is for us living on a coast that has fairly dormant tectonic plates,? he said.

I'm from the CA Bay Area. I don't even get out of bed for less than a 6.0

but seriously, I felt a little shaking out in Mt. Olive, NJ

Didn't notice the quake, but my building shakes all the time when trucks drive past anyway.

Surprised to hear so many emergency sirens and see police cruisers and fire trucks flying up and down Jersey Ave earlier.

Saw that same interview. My coffee almost came back up through my nose when he insisted that the waterfront high-rises were all safe because the buildings are all "up to code." Wish I had the same confidence in the Buildings Dept.

It was not directed at anyone on this board. I'm getting lots of e-mails from people I know in the West, laughing at NYers for running outside in the quake and that kind of thing.

Anyway, it was just a joke.

If that was directed at me... born and raised in NJ. You're confusing smug with snarky
