Just because one person does something wrong and is getting away with it, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Any doctor who signs a form saying an able-bodied person is entitled to handicap parking is a doctor you can't trust.

Has anyone ever noticed how many permit handicap parking spaces exist on 4th between Jersey and Erie. I don't know how legitimate they really are but I recall almost all of north side of the street is permit handicap and a few on the south side are as well.
I have a neighbor that lives across the street from me and he has a handicap parking permit. Everyone in his entire family is capable of getting around without any assistance and don't have any medical issues. I just think he wanted a spot reserved in front of his house. I'm going to go get a doctor's note for my own private parking spot in front of my house.

An investigation by some concerned citizens or media outlet is in order to determine if these people are legitimately entitled to be there or if it's a scam. I saw a TV show about just this sort of thing where able-bodied individuals were in possession of handicap placards and totally scammed the system. It is not fair to all the people who have to pay and struggle to find parking.

When you go to the DMV and fill out the form to get the permanent (blue) placard you can check a box to get a plate or a placard or both.

I remember reading on the Blue Placards you must carry a valid permit for it all times, and its only good for one year I think.. The plates are exempt since you have show DMV proof of the disability to get it.

There is no difference in how you get them, it's just a box you check off on the form of whether you want a plate or placard. The placards are permanent, they don't expire unless you have one of the temporary red ones.

if you park with the placards you deserve a ticket, those with a handicap plat should be exempt Then when you go to court you have to show the valid permit (which is good for one year I think) for those placards and your ticket will be voided without any cost .
Or create a system that allows the card to be scanned by the PA.

I also love when you are walking down Newark avenue for example Newark/Erie and you see all the cars parked illegally.
The parking ticket lady said to me she was told not to ticket them They are the store owners and personal vehicles of folks that work at the Police Dept. right there. Blatant and pathetic.

I am also very annoyed by the abuse of handicapped parking/placards in this city (and elsewhere) but in all honesty, it's pretty hard to enforce. JC is quite diligent with who they give the permanent spots to, i.e. the disabled person must see a doctor apointed by JC for a physical/fill out lots of forms/etc. I see it abused all of the time but like I said, its hard to enforce. It took my roommate (who uses a wheelchair) 7 months to get a designated handicapped spot downtown. So there's the flip side...
Also, there is no way to enforce how many cars with handicapped placards can park on a street. However, the city limits the amount of designated handicapped spots on a block to two I believe... Its obvious that a lot people abuse handicapped parking/privelleges, however, restricting handicapped parking punishes and further inconveniences people who are truly disabled.

I think this goes too far. Even my own 77 y/o mother who's fit enough to takes tour vacations abroad managed to get a placard. She's no marathoner but there's no parking lot where she REALLY needs to park close. But down in S Florida the handicapped spots are ALWAYS full! When we're all special, no one is, eh?

Once again this is the Law in New Jersey.
When parking at a metered space, a driver with a placard or handicapped license plate must put the appropriate amount of money in the meter. If the vehicle will occupy the space for more than the maximum amount that the meter holds, the driver must fill the meter to the maximum amount. This will permit the vehicle to occupy the space for up to 24 hours, and no further payment will be required during that time. A municipality may require the vehicle to vacate the space after 24 hours.

There are so many cars on Montgomery Street between Greene and Washington streets that have placards in their window. It is not right that I have to pay for meter and these people many with NY plates have placards and go to work and not have to worry about putting money in the meter. Sometimes they dont even get tickets for not moving for the street cleaner. None of these people are handicapped they are just scamming the city and and should be ticketed.

The building next to it has there own parking lot for residents.
The cars with the placards don't have to pay the meters according to a friend of mine who has one & he never gets a ticket for it. I was in traffic court last month & the only way you get a ticket for a handicap placard is if the ticket person doesn't see it. They still dismissed the tickets if you presented the placard. Just seems unfair & a loss of much money to a city that really needs the cash.

um, Yeah, it Does, if you have a handicap placard/plate you must feed the meter but you are exempted from returning to feed it after it runs out.
maybe there is a MD or PT office near there?

There are a lot of old folks that live in the building right there, feeding pigeons and waiting around for buses.
So I don't think it's a scam. Still, they should be paying for parking. Handicapped tags don't give you free parking at meters.

Yesterday I noticed a Mercedes speeding down Coles that came to a sudden stop at the Stop-sign probably because I was glaring at him. I then noticed that the driver of the almost brand new Mercedes was a JCPD officer in uniform and he had a handicap license plate!

Couldn't help but notice as I walked on just 1 side of the street between Montgomery & Greene street 7 handicap placards all parked at meter spots & 3 on Greene between CC & Montgomery.
Seems a little excessive to me. Gonna start to look now around there & see how many more & if they even move. Understand some people really need them but that just seems crazy especially when they don't even have to put $$ in the meter.
