+1. Best traditional Italian sub I've had in Jersey City was at second street bakery. Huge, too.

I saw signs on the window that say this place is turning into an Italian restaurant called "Roman Nose." Anyone have any more info?

I'd say the best in downtown is Rustique, Bon Appitito, and that new place by the beer garden, Abbondanza Trattoria. Which happens to have great food too (and is byo)

Nicks Village was the worst ruse ever. Yes, the people there looked like Italians that know good cooking, but couldn't even come close to making a good slice of pizza. What we could really use in JC is some sort of Italian market where we can get prepared Italian food, and different Italian meats and cheeses. Kinda like a Tuscany Deli or a Top Tomato if any of you guys are familiar with those chains.

Thats true. But last I checked you don't need 5 old men sitting around the one table in the restaurant. What are they, "consultants"? Was it a business or a social club?

Truth. I certainly never saw them open after 9. It would have been great to have a late night alternative to A1, especially since McDonalds has officially ended any efforts to be open 24/7.

With Esperantos closing recently as well, The Law of Conservation of Pizzerias tells us that the new Two Boots will be at least as good as those two combined.

What happened to Nick's Village Pizza on Newark?

They went on "Vacation" which has now turned into disappearing signage and a store that is not open.

Meanwhile, tonight outside the PATH station at Grove St. you have all these trucks and food peddlers.

All of that should be done away with. They should be forced to open real restaurants on Newark Avenue.

Still Waiting for a real Restaurant Row in Jersey City.

No more Food Trucks. If you can manage a food truck, you can open a real restaurant.

Thanks.

Yes, what we really needed was a bunch of creepy old cousins of Tony Soprano sitting around making pizz-ah pies.

As for the trucks, their mobility allows them to serve multiple locations, meaning we get a greater variety of food that otherwise wouldn't be supported if the locations were full time. Exchange place has plenty of office workers by day, but few residents by night; conversely, Grove Street has plenty of residents at night, a few office workers by day. By sharing time in two different locations, both places get a greater variety of food.

I suppose someone lamenting the passing of Nick's Pizza though wouldn't really understand that food should actually taste good.

You first line is insulting to a certain ethnic group. The rest you have a point. I think the webmaster should have deleted your first sentence.

As a McWop, its not offensive for me to say it. Its only offensive when a WASP says it.

I had a few slices from them over the last several weeks, but ultimately the taste just isn't there. I think the only way I would choose Nick's over Stella's, Helen's or Bon Appetito is if Nick's was open after midnight and the others were not.

I found it to be a better-than-your-average slice. A good option for a quick bite.

Thank you. Its all we got left downtown, let them be. If you yuppies get nervous walk another way. Now for their food, I like the pizza , not the best but way better than helens or stellas. The lasagna was actually pretty damn good to.

I heard they were slow -- they seem to have too many guys working there at the same time -- and by that I mean just sitting in all the chairs out in front -- I am sure it is off putting to customers, well especially young female customers - but then again that is just MHO... They do have good pizza -- perhaps they should do some coupon flyers to get people to try the delivery -- dare I say it -- maybe they should do a "Groupon!"

The food is great here! I tried a couple pasta's and chicken dishes and everything was much better than your average pizza parlor.

YET another brand new place on Newark Avenue!!! Nick's Village Pizzeria 125 Newark Ave Jersey City, NJ 07302 (201) 432-0100 Right by the subway - maybe they will get a liquor license under that Resturant Row ordinance. I had no idea anything was even in there until I happened to look in when I was walking by. They need to take advantage of the location.

Well, there IS a 10 foot tall statue of a pizzaman outside the place ... that's pretty flashy.

No, but the exterior does need something added to it. I think a really nice, classic awning should do the trick. As for the inside -- I kind of like my pizzerias pretty no-frills on the inside.

If he stays open to 3AM I'll surely be there late nights. Getting sick of fried chicken.

He needs to flash it up though. That building is just so bleak.

Has anybody tried it yet?

I tried a slice last night. It was a pretty average slice for NJ/NY. It was tasty ... but nothing necessarily stood out about it. It was NOT greasy.

One of the owners said that he's hoping to stay open until 3 am on the weekends, which I think is pretty awesome, considering the lack of such places.
