Don't have information about success in claims, but I believe the relevant statue is this: N.J.S.A. 59 et seq.
You need to file claim within 90 days and show that the "public entity had actual or constructive notice of the dangerous condition" (i.e. the pot hole). Google on NJSA 59 and pothole to find case rulings.

Don't know whether the state does, but the city does all the time. Makes me think it's possible the state would as well.

http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/potholeform.shtm Pothole Damage Claims: To file a pothole damage claim, please contact the Department of Treasury's Office of Risk Management at 609.292.4347 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Potholes should still be reported using the online form below so NJDOT can make the necessary repairs anyone had luck with this?

There's a pothole on 5th St near my house (between Coles/Monmouth) that you can see about 2 feet into and the asphalt around it seems to be sinking too. Is the service request form above the best way to report it?

Okay, so the paving effort on Columbus Drive is underway, and ironically the milled surface is actually a lot smoother than it was when it was actually "paved." But now there's a new hazard--manhole covers that stick out several inches above the road surface. I've heard a number of cars have struck them and been damaged as a result.
Drive carefully...

The city delayed repaving Columbus drive for 2 plus years so that they could turn it into a 6 lane super highway. If it seems to you like the city's priorities are mixed up, perhaps you shouldn't have voted for Healy last year.

If enough people complain maybe they might fill in the potholes.

On CC Dr. the city was going to town filling holes, it was one patch after another. That road needs a complete repavement immedately if not sooner. And a bike lane as well.

http://mycusthelp.com/JERSEYCITYNJ/_cs/RequestSelect.aspx I've used this in the past and it has worked. The city responded to my request via email about 2-3 days later and when I checked the pothole had been filled. Of course I am sure the city is being bombarded with all the new weather related potholes. BTW? How fast were you going to do $1500.00 in damage?

Does anyone know if there's a number to call to report potholes? I hit one this morning near Target that caused about $1,500 worth of damage to my car.

Obviously the recent weather is causing more and more potholes. As much as I hate potholes I fear that a smooth, well paved four lane road will simply turn into a highway. I have seen cars and trucks in the past going 40-50mph on that road and it's only going to get worse in the future. Those potholes seem to be the best bet for slowing and "calming" traffic on that road for now.

The city of Boston has a few new ways to combat potholes, including an update pothole-patching truck and an iPhone app that can automatically report the location of bumps in the road:

it would seem that the city figures it is cheaper to pay out claims on blown tires than actually fix the dangerous roads. Cynically they figure less than 20% of damages will actually get reported since it is not exactly something they advertise...

I'm surprised no one mentioned in this thread that one of them almost swallowed a fire truck.
Jersey City fire truck stuck in sinkhole Michaelangelo Conte The Jersey Journal February 03, 2011 A Jersey City fire truck is stuck in a sinkhole on Linden Avenue, at the intersection of Garfield Avenue. The ladder truck's double rear wheel on the driver's side fell through the pavement this afternoon, wedging the truck in place. Two tow trucks are at the scene now, jacking it up, Fire Director Armando Roman said. At about 1 p.m. the two left rear wheels of the truck plunged through the blacktop above an 8-foot-deep hole and the rear end of the truck was touching the roadway. Water could be heard rushing in the undermined section of roadway and dirt was heard splashing as it fall into the water. Fire Department officials worked out a plan to jack the truck up and slide a steel plate over the hole so the truck can be moved. "We don't know if a pipe broke earlier and washed out the infrastructure of the road or if the truck fell through and broke the pipe," Roman said. The fire truck, which is stationed nearby on Linden Avenue between Old Bergen Road and Ocean Avenue, was heading to a motor vehicle accident when it got stuck, Roman said. Another truck responded instead. No firefighters were injured, Roman said. In February 2009, another firetruck was stuck in a collapsed portion of Linden Avenue, closer to Old Bergen Road.

Attach your pics in your Service Request! The only way to get the streets fixed is to issue a complaint (re: work order). I really doubt it will get fixed if no says anything - we need to tell the city where it is. This city has no maintenance department patrolling the streets to find problems!!

I just got back from dealing with two blown out driver side tires from an awesome pothole that I hit driving to Target. It was located in the left lane on Washington Street right after crossing over Newport Parkway. I was going about 30mph. I took some photos, hopefully I can get the city to pay for whatever the total will be (getting them replaced tomorrow). These streets suck assphalt.
